Only thing you need to know prior to moving to LA is how high the rent is.
It depends where you live. Some of the lower-end neighborhoods, like Palms, Beverlywood, Culver City, are comparable to rents in the north east.
buuuuut not as much as NYC or SF :)
Or Boston, even more expensive
Am from Calabasas, and it’s not bad living in LA , it’s just the traffic that’s bad.
it's a common knowledge at this point
Just an FYI from an LA Native: West Hollywood and Santa Monica are actually independent cities and not part of the City of Los Angeles. However, they are adjacent to the City of Los Angeles. Now, Hollywood and Silverlake are districts/neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles. Don't be fooled by the glamour you see on TV. LA has a lot of rough areas.
Yes, they’re a part of Los Angeles County.
thank you for this i’m definitely making a note, i want to move when i’m at least 19 in three years
Yeah, the closest to the paradise LA portrayed in entertainment media, though not always, is the beach areas of Orange County and San Diego. The first is very suburban, politically conservative, and boring and way out of the budget of most people but shows like Laguna Beach are based there, people can mistake that show for just being a beach near LA when in reality, it feels like a whole different city. SD is like somewhere between OC and LA (in terms of qualities, not location). More going on than OC but still nowhere near as many options as LA, better urban area, a lot cleaner than LA, not quite as conservative as OC but more than LA, etc.
They are all most definitely part of la county my dude
@@stickshiftsniper2831 LA County is not "L.A." per se. Only Los Angeles City is "L.A."
As someone who has lived in LA for almost 20 years( born and raised here) these are so funny. Just the things people don't realize, and yes there are bad drivers in LA because there are too many people here. I love where I live, but I rarely go into any of those cities she mentions most of those places are things that long time residents aren't apart of. Also, there is a big homeless population everywhere in LA. There is a severe lack of affordable housing due to so many people wanting to come live here leading to rent hikes, and a lot of people who grew up here (usually minorities) are pushed out of their housing to make "trendy" areas. I just wanted to mention this as it is an important thing to consider, and remember that there will be large black, Latino, Asian, and pretty much any other culture around you so please educate yourself before moving here, and be respectful of those communities.
I was born in LA and raised in San Jose. I'm currently living in San Diego and hopefully will be moving to LA sometime soon. Thank you for your words of wisdom.
I love the last bit of advice about educating ourselves and being respectful about good communities of color is that the last thing we need is a viral video of ignorant Karen's lashing out at a POC for no reason.
@@Ice-fg9jc Do you not like San Diego? I'm actually considering to move there from LA lol. It's actually between Sacramento and San Diego.
I think when moving to LA, learn to be an aggressive driver. What Shelby mentioned in her video was a perfect example of aggressive driving. Seriously, you will never get anywhere on time if you aren't willing to bend the driving rules. Also, another tip when driving in LA is to always leave early. There will be traffic no matter what time you are out driving or how far you are going. There's a saying in LA, "If you aren't early, you're already late."
Thank you for this comment. I think it’s important for these people to address gentrification and how people come here without any understanding of the communities and people that exist here outside of the white washed transplant view of L.A.
I have zero interest in moving to LA and yet I watched this all the way through LOL. I just love the style of these videos & I get so drawn in hahaha Am I alone in this?
For some reason the cold water is what surprised me the most?! 💜

I moved here by myself, I didn’t have anything to lose, I didn’t have a job or any money, no family no friends... this city is pretty special for me. I’m living with my new roommates right now 🙂
that sounds awesome. Where do you live? And do you recommend any certain areas? i want to be near the beach but i hear its better to be near eastside if your younger with less money... idk
ppl like you is why LA is LA, no education, no money, they think they can just bum it in the streets their whole life until they become a rockstar
@@mmoarchives2542 bro you have to chill. This person just moved to LA because they wanted a change. They're not keeping anyone from going to college or getting a job.
Hey which area are you living in it?
@@jammiiing with the mentality the city won’t thrive

@@sjtanman What am i missing? you've commented on just about everything telling people to not move here? Having lived here all my life, i'm not sure what you have against LA? It's just like any other big city. If you're young, it's fine to move here. I wouldn't retire here since economically it's not the best choice, but as long as you have a decent job it's fine.
You need to mention traffic again, because it is real bad.
I’m an apartment manager in LA. Be VERY careful with subleases. It’s not really that common here, and there are plenty of illegal subleases. If you take on an illegal sublease, you could be thrown out, or worse, end up responsible for all the rent if the actual tenant flakes.
Don’t forget that this applies to AirBnB as well. I’ve had people do illegal AirBnB in my building, and had to turn away folks who thought they could stay here.
Because of the housing shortage here, it’s ILLEGAL to run an AirBnB in an apartment building. The only legal ones are in single family homes, duplexes, or triplexes.
If you see an AirBnB listed in a building with more than three units, it could be shut down at any point. I’d stay away. Condos are a grey area, as are rules for smaller cities like Burbank, Santa Monica, Culver City. Remember LA *city* is only one part of LA *county* and places like West Hollywood and Santa Monica, which are separate cities, have different rules.
Bottom line
Great tips! I work in real estate in the west side. I haven’t heard any landlord or management company would allow sublease, especially rent control units. They are waiting to catch you doing it so that they can evict you out of your rent control unit.
@@EliotHochberg it is usually the other tenants that rat out the sublease or AirBnB. Owners or managers don’t like trouble makers therefore offenses like these could have bad consequences. In LA, the buildings with low rents are mostly older long term owners who self manage. Once they die or cash out, the low rent tenants are at risk.
Californian landlords should be defunded and their property redistributed to promote equality.
Eliot Hochberg hii what do u recommend to someone who’s trying to pursue acting to live in?btw thanks for ur explanation 😊💜

I lived in SoCal 10 years, LA one year. I loved it. Rent was $3,500 but I was 10 min from Venice Beach. All in all, you can’t beat the climate, restaurants, and lifestyle. But don’t come here poor and “hope” to make it.
You can’t rent without earning three times the rent annually or proof of a shit load of cash in the bank. It is super expensive here . You are paying for the ocean, mountains, canyons and beauty of California.
Damn 3k mines 6,000
True, it's expensive for a reason and ur competing with 40 milllion other people.

@@mrg3627 shes completely out of touch with what people who are raised here would put in a video like this thats for sure.
Many people that move to LA expect to live a very kardashian lifestyle without knowing that most people in LA never achieve that and instead have to rent a room forever, i was born in LA and if my family wasn’t here i would definitely move to a cheaper state
Ironic as it sounds...Texas is somewhat the same way

This is by far, the most educational "LA" vlog I have watched. I live, born and raised, in the Philippines and I am literally daydreaming of living in LA sooner or later despite the fact that I don't have any connections there, I don't know anyone who's currently living there, so basically I'm just praying lol. Given all these facts mentioned in the video, makes me think, what job can I apply for, just to be able to live in LA. I know a lot of people throw negative comments on deciding to live in LA, most of them are even Californians, but for people like me who just want to be independent, explore, and live in an unfamiliar yet we know, happy places "for us", we just want to strive and do what it takes to whatever we feel we should accomplish.
So yeah, I am literally starting from nothing like 0, I haven't even travelled outside PH yet, so I just hope the stars will align for me one day and let me live my American, let's say Californian dream soon! I hope it comes true! Spreading love from the Philippines!
Few tips for you, anywhere you want to move! Get yourself valuable skills for the entertainment industry, tech: graphic designers, web developers, programming, or anything you could do in any field given, freelancer and hired by a corporation. Work on your sales skills, how to promote (yourself). Start by making a plan, putting dates, and a budget on your dream... Faster than waiting on stars to align ;) Create your opportunity, be bold and make your luck! Save, save, save, save, invest, save, be debt-free, save, invest and make sure you're ready for discovery. "Daydreaming" is overrated, just make it happen. Much love from Canada.
@@blablalagence5013 maybe this is what I need I would like to move to La I really do but I don’t have amazing grades in the uk they are fine but USA are not amazing it just seems so hard to get a job to be able to move over to La and I wouldn’t want to go without my mom and step dad or my little sis so I would need like a 3 bed room apartment it just seems impossible to move I would need a really good job to move and that you don’t get any help with housing like you do in the UK

Rain is the most common weather here. Get over it, it's just rain hahaha.

Great info! As someone who’s looking specifically for a sublease situation while attending a school there for a few months, that bit of knowledge was pretty valuable.
Being born and raised in LA these videos (although well made) are just so off. The people who make up the LA stereotype are the people who moved here from different places. Living in the valley isn't a long drive from anything, there is stuff to do in the valley. It is definitely not like a suburb lol.
yeah honestly it is people who move here that aren't from here that i find have the biggest egos. people from here typically (not always of course) know better and mind their own business
@@stephanie4218 I'm sure all these comments have deterred people from moving to LA.... Not even COVID has stopped people (mostly college grads) from moving to desirable cities like NYC, LA and SF since they think rent is falling to "affordable" prices now and can get "deals"
The Valley is more sleepy than the LA Basin, it's a fact.
Everyone from LA is from "somewhere else." Just a little more than 100 years ago almost nobody lived there.
@@Matt90541 ok buddy, 100 years ago is irrelevant. I was born and raised in LA.
I still think Shelby needs a Netflix show, she’s queen of filming and editing

Yes! Totally agree with you!
if you want to watch "Basic White Girl - the sHOW!"
These are great tips Shelby. I am from the High Desert in California but I have lived in Malibu, Agoura, Ojai and Ventura. California is so different in each area. Traveling before making a move is a great idea.
I’m from around Edwards Air Force Bass and have lived in Agoura & Malibu too. California is so different everywhere you go. It’s pretty cool! Just wanted to say hi to another desert girl!
You really opened my eyes after watching this video! I had a really different concept of LA but now I think I´m going to reconsider my options of moving there.
Honestly, i haven't ever looked forward to move to LA, but i love seeing LA through TV shows, vlogs, films, espacially your videos. I'm really appreciate your viewpoint that expanded my horizon and helped me improve my English listening skill a lot. Thanks from Vietnam ♥♥
This was a great video Shelby. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to move to California. For my 18th birthday I got a trip to California and thought it was awesome. The only problem is I’m a native New Yorker. NYC in my opinion is the best city in the world and I’m sure I would miss it too much. Your suggestion about subleasing has really peaked my interest. Just knowing that it doesn’t have to be permanent has made me reconsider. Thank you.
I just moved 3 weeks ago, never visited the area before lol. I'm loving it so far!
What has the transition been like with COVID? Are you glad you moved now? Is there any part of you that wishes you had waited till CA opened up more?
You're one of the few lifestyle CZcamsrs I follow because of the stellar sound quality in your videos ♥️ this is from someone who works with sound for a living. So kudos Shelby!
From an Aussie watching this, I enjoyed it. Not that I am looking at relocating anytime soon. I liked seeing where different places are located. Have been to LA a few times over the years and so much more places I want to see when we can eventually travel again!
I've only lived in LA my entire life so it's very interesting to me hearing about the aggressiveness in drivers. I don't see it as being aggressive but then again I've never really been outside of LA. Makes me want to visit different parts of the USA. Many things I never notice before.
As a child of the 80s and a native Angeleno (even though I’ve been living out of LA for a long time), I agree that LA drivers aren’t that aggressive. It’s a whole different world from district to district and city to city within LA county, yet I still love it regardless of all the negative things it has.
I’ve been to LA, and visited most of the places you reviewed. To me, LA was pretty much what I expected. I was warned before I came that Hollywood was not what most think it is. The biggest thing that shocked me was the amount of homeless people. Overall I thought LA was decent and had a nice vibe to it. With that said, I don’t think it’s worth living there unless you’re rich! For the average person wanted to buy a house and start a family one day, it’s just it going to happen. If a young person what to get some roommates and enjoy it for a few years, fine. Other than that, it’s a no go for me! I would recommend Texas or any of the bigger cities in the southeast!
Howdy Lol don't send any more people to texas! We are full😂😂
Texas cities are getting very expensive. Especially Austin.
Texas has sink holes… no thanks
@@JBoy340a As a native Texan, IDK why people like Austin to begin with. It's very overrated and people drive terribly. The best parts of Texas are the areas nobody talks about.
Please don’t come to Myrtle Beach it’s full
Shelby you made a great video and your explanation of LA was very clear and descriptive. Thank you so much!!❤️❤️💙💜💚💛
Very informative and well put together. Thank you. I’ve been out to CA & LA a dozen or so times but I really know nothing about it. As a touring musician I rarely get to take in a lot of the places to which I travel
This video is so aesthetically pleasing! I live in LA but in the Southbay area near the beach. I was definitely one of those people that dreamed of moving to LA and I actually made it happen. I can say after living here for a couple years that it was not what I was expecting and I would never live here permanently. It’s a fun city especially for those in their 20s, 30s who don’t have serious commitments (married, kids, etc.) but it’s super expensive and such a fast paced way of life which is the complete opposite of my experience growing up in Texas. However, I do want to live in a different LA area before I live for good. I’ve always liked North Hollywood but I also like Culver City and have heard good things about Echo Park. That’s one of the pluses about LA is if you get tired of the area your in you can always move to a different neighborhood and have a new experience sadly it will always be pricey no matter where you live in LA.
Born and raised in LA. I wouldn't call Silver Lake the "Brooklyn" of LA per se, it's more like Berkeley.
what part do you think is? genuinely curious haha
Exactly
Karly Berkeley, CA. Both Silver Lake and Berkeley are known for their “hipster”, “alternative” scenes. While Brooklyn has hipsters too, there’s more of a diverse culture there that Silver Lake and Berkeley don’t have.
As a New Yorker (Born and raised), what do you know about Brooklyn? It’s so big that if it were a city it would be the 4th largest in the country so perhaps, both of you know too little about Brooklyn to make that call.
Alimah B Quite a bit considering that I lived there for 3 years, and lived in the bay for 4.
Loving the way you show different sides of LA, hope to see more about the different sides of LA 😊 Greetings from Denmark 😊
You're such a blessing thank you!
Great job and great breakdown
Thanks for acknowledging gentrification. A lot of people think LA is the place to move to, but in doing so it hurts people who have been living in LA for years.
AMEN she doesn't need to be promoting a state that needs NO PROMOTION.. we dont need more transplants!!!! CA SUCKS DONT MOVE HERE
Explain why you think a person has some kind of right to live in a particular place. Do so in a way that doesn't immediately lead to that person having the right to own whatever they want even if they can't afford it.
Thank you for the honest breakdown!
I don’t plan to move there but always wanted to know. This was useful information and honest.
So true what you said about being “trapped” in Santa Monica. I lived there (grew up there) for like 20 years and barely ever left the west side
Westside bubble is real...u gotta break out of it to get a better perspective.
It's funny because I just moved here from the East coast and I have found that drivers are WAY LESS aggressive. People use their signals, honking is not excessive (Ill maybe hear 3-4 honks in a 20 min drive), people drive pretty slow as far as cities are concerned (street lights like every block, you cant even get up to speed before another light.) Driving was the thing I was most concerned about moving here, but it has been the easiest thing to adjust to out of everything. PARKING on the other hand is a b-word.
Bro im from NYC and I thought the drivers were VERY aggressive there, usually at night tho, during the day they alright
Great video, like always Shelby!
I love the style of your videos and man do I miss LA!!
I lived in Burbank for a while and really loved it!
I don't make a 6 figure salary, but have lived in DTLA and Miracle Mile. It is really important to understand that a significant portion of your income will go to rent, but you can still live a decent lifestyle if you truly desire to live in LA. Some individuals really get caught up in "Keeping up with the Joneses." That will keep you broke! LA's public transit system is quite extensive ($1.75 for metro bus or rail) so you could live without a car. Also, many employers will cover your public transportation costs. In my opinion it is a waste of time to spend hours in traffic just to drive to work (live near your job if possible). Driving to working is counterproductive because you basically have to pay to get to work. I am able to pay my rent and live somewhat comfortably because I don't buy luxury cars. I do own a car (older mustang in great shape) that is PAID for; I refuse to finance cars. Most importantly, don't move here and play "The Joneses" and you could make it.
Yeah, a lot of people in L.A live lavish lifestyles and wonder why they are broke.
As a person who doesn't know a lot about United States Shellby's videos are a real eye opener. Please do SOME MORE videos about other neighbourhoods in LA and what is specific about them. Even if I am not going to move there ever I still think it's is very interesting to know and maybe even if I decide to go on holiday and stay in a hotel or shor term holiday rental this is good to know.
Great video thank you so much for the advice!
You should talk about Glendale. It's a great place to live and rent is cheaper
I was also thinking about Culver City, everything is pretty reachable from there. Though I think the rents there have risen a lot by now
I thought those were expensive as well.
You always have such gorgeous looking shots. Each vid is a work of art.
thank you so much!
Your video edits are outstanding, a true skilled talent.
Excellent video! I’d love to see more neighborhoods!!
You brought up the option of living without a car, but only mentioned exploitive rideshare apps as a feasible alternative. LA has the country’s 3rd largest public transit system (and #1 light rail) and is perfectly capable of getting you from point A to B, especially if you live downtown, Koreatown, Hollywood, or near a rail line. You should do a video about Metro!
Most people who move to L.A. are pursuing an unattainable dream and many will use and abuse, literally sell their soul to cash in ...it's no place for innocence.
Be warned. If you're young, things will come easy, but with a price.
If you're older ...don't even bother. Ageism is brutal in L.A. As is Skid Row ...if you do move to L.A. volunteer in Skid Row if you really want to grow as a person. The Downtown Women's Center at 5th and San Pedro is where I volunteer❤
Jeez. You sound like Rose McGowan.

Before COVID, West Hollywood was one of the most beautiful and dynamic parts of Los Angeles - Especially at night... As for Hollywood. If you think it's rough now, you should have seen it in the late 1970s. You had girls pretty as Shelby walking the streets as Hookers. Santa Monica is really nice despite the homeless population, who for the most part are harmless.
Note for Transplants! LA county is actually made up of 88 cities; for example, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills (all independent cities) are actually NOT part of the city of Los Angeles but LA county - people think those cities are "LA" bc they see them highlighted in the media. That in mind, she's only talking about the trendy, heavy transplant areas. Let's see her go to the gateway cities, the SGV, Gardena, Compton and LBC, lol.
80% of those cities are trash
But the San Fernando Valley most of it is LA city
I’ve watched this video several times.❤️
Very helpful and informative. Great job.
Omg YES on the green lights with no green arrows thing, I was so stressed out turning left when I first moved here!! Now I feel surprised every time there actually is a green arrow, LOL!
In Burbank we now have flashing yellow arrows.
As someone that's lived in LA for 5 years, I can say the valley is a GREAT option. Yes parts of the valley are a little bit out of the way from things. But, I'd argue that places like Burbank, North Hollywood, and Studio City are easier for people to get into and out of the main hubs in LA. Places like hollywood are high traffic and a highway is not super close. Burbank, NOHO and Studio city are right on main highways(and Burbank you don't even need to get on a highway it's right over the hill from hollywood. VERY central .)
The Hollywood Freeway goes right through Hollywood.
This was one of the more accurate breakdowns I’ve seen
Wow Shelby your editing in all videos is fantastic
can you please do more of these bc for years I've always been drawn towards LA and CA in general
If you live here for a year, that will be out your system.
Yes! Thank you for touching on the Left turn at a red light situation. It’s so upsetting when people DON’T turn after the light turns red. I once had a cop honk at me because my mind wondered off for a moment and the light turned red and I didn’t turn. 😂🤦🏽♀️
Also yeah the ocean is cold AF.
I didn't know this wasn't a thing until I visited my parents who moved to a smaller town in arizona and I turned on the yellow/red and they said 'People don't do that here, you're supposed to wait until the next light' and I said 'Uhhh... but then you'd be sitting at this intersection forever?!?' I'm pretty sure this is legal but it's been forever since I read the book that I don't even know anymore.. Haha.
Yes, turning on RED while you are in the intersection is codified within California Traffic Rules.
I moved from NJ to Santa Monica in September. And you hit Santa Monica spot on...
Great video and very helpful
Aw im sorry your hard drive crashed! 💙
Sent it to a repair place so hoping it’s okay!! Thank you!!
@@ShelbyChurch Gonna be hella expensive if head crashed or electronics went haywire.
Boy, what a coincidence! I follow you and Christina AND Shelby and Monica. At first blush, wouldn't think that the "two groups" would be naturals to follow each other. But, just goes to show ya :)
Thank you for acknowledging the fact that silverlake has been gentrified. I was part of the first families during 2002 that was kicked out of the area. I’ve seen my community turn into something else. Now the same with echo park and highland park.
Same hippy millennials are taking over
And Eagle Rock.
I never knew WHY the roads are more slick after the first rain in a while. Thanks for the info!
so informative and beautifully made
I hope to kind of apply this to "Moving to Berlin" one day.. 😀 This is so far away from me, it's like a whole movie world on it's own - super interesting! Thank you, Shelby!
SHELBY IS SO HELPFUL WITH EVERYTHING
Need her to be helpful and keep people OUT OF CALIFORNIA NOT PROMOTING IT!!!!
SHELBY, we need a part of this
Love your channel and your sharing.
“Who’s moving time LA right now”
Me: “me, yes hi me I’m moving across the country on Sunday”
Just moved here on Friday!!!
The only disconnect here is that homeless in Santa Monica are a huge problem for residents, especially the gutterpunks. If you are within 6/7 blocks of the pier, it's not uncommon to wake up to one of them passed out on the sidewalk.
Well done. Well spoken too!
Best of luck with your computer setup, and hope everything was backed up. Nice pivot to still make this week's release! :)
