    Tyra, great video! Every renter in the city of LA should know about REAP (Rent Escrow Account Program). I mention this because you talked about the roaches in your building, which means it's uninhabitable, especially if it's a persistent problem. Basically, if your landlord gets cited for a violation (like for roaches) and it's not fixed within a certain period of time, you pay reduced rent until it's fixed.

    Read your lease before signing too, there are a lot og legitamate leasing companies engaged in predatory practices too. If you can rent directly from an owner that's the best arrangement.
    Consider renting a room in a house until you get established. Have a plan to get back home in case LA doesn't work for you.

      Invitation homes is notoriously terrible. They bait and switch. Have clauses allowing them to raise the rent during the lease and you are on the hook for it. I can't stress enough to read every word before signing. And if there is a mistake and they say to sign it anyway because you know what they meant. Don't sign it until they give you a new corrected copy. Companies lie, cheat, and steal.

Before malls, my mom would take us to Downtown because that's where most of the stores were, so it was there when we'd see homeless. Fast forward to 2021 . . . now ALL of SoCal is full of homeless. This was really good information! I learned the hard way how important it is to read reviews about apartments regardless of where you live. I live in the DC area and moved into an apartment community to save money and thought the apartment was okay enough. But not long after I moved in, the roaches gave me a welcoming party....first grandfathers, then babies, toddlers, teenagers, aunts, uncles, etc. It was a nightmare! The Leasing Manager wouldn't let me out of my lease without charging me a hefty fee. But when I started posting pictures of the bugs on Yelp, they called me quickly to let me out of my lease with no charge. Happy ending but I paid a stressful price.

    You do need a car here. But in the early 90s, I was a single mom who did just fine without a car for four years. However, I had laundry in my apartment complex and lived next door to the grocery store. In those days, the grocery carts didn’t lock up if you ventured so many yards away from the store. I wheeled the cart all the way to my front door. Every week or so, trucks would come around and collect the carts from all over the city.
    Back then, we didn’t have a Metro rail system. My daughter’s school was right in the neighborhood and had before-and-after-school care. I walked her to school and caught the bus right across the street from the school. I worked downtown and at least three or four bus lines took the freeway downtown. From there it was a short walk to my office.
    If I needed to shop I took the bus to the mall or wherever. A lot of stuff, especially Christmas gifts, I ordered from catalogs. There was also a drugstore and a five-and-dime in the same strip mall as the grocery store. There was also a record store, swap meet, a beauty supply, a park, a public pool, my daughter’s summer day camp, and restaurants either down the street or across the street.

    I'm from the midwest. I'm thinking about moving here if only for 2 months. I've always said LA is fun to visit but not fun to live in, I've been to the city several times. Homelessness is everywhere. Then you have the very rich areas where the homes are worth millions. There seems to be a disconnect between the elite and the other people.

    • @gladlock
      @gladlock Před 2 lety +4

      I think the opposite, it’s boring to visit but great to live. We have little history and no central area, so it’s nearly impossible to really get the “highlights” done on a trip. So you only have amusement parks or cheesy tourist traps like Hollywood walk of fame. If you live here, we have the beach and not too far there are great mountains and hikes, and so many neighborhoods with their own character. There is so much good food, for all diets and special needs! You can find any kind of physical fitness activity to suit you. You can bike lots of places. We have great places to shop. We have great professional and university sports. Good museums. There is so much to do, we are ok paying $2000 for 1 bedroom because we spend so much time outside

    Great and entertaining video. I escaped LA after 25 years..... I always tell people who are thinking of moving there: You should NOT be picturing the show Beverly Hills 90210. You NEED to be picturing the movie Boys N the Hood or the movie Friday. That is more life will be like for you. LOL.

      Also, please be careful folks - women (and men) who move to LA for "acting" quite often end up doing PORN. These are true FACTS.

      @@Anne_Myriam_ because people that wanna act often dont have any real skills in life. Imagine 5 million people competing for like 30-40 jobs as actors that will actually pay the bills. Acting is insanely competitive. Most actors actually work at restaurants/bars. Pathetic industry to aspire for. Its all so superficial

    I don't know what the deal is in LA city but they let a lot of it look like crap and let so much stuff that lowers the quality of life for residents go unchecked. The LA many people imagine are really the separate cities within LA county that are more expensive and the coastal suburbs and not really where most single 20-30 somethings move to. The cool neighborhoods many single people flock to are between Sunset Blvd and Pasadena but that's far from the beach and a lot of that area is run down looking as well and imo overhyped, it's mostly houses with some pockets of cool places on busy, noisy, dirty streets. Abbot Kinney Blvd and Main Street in Venice is really the coolest looking area in LA city (combo of many independent, hipster shops, nice variety of 1 story architecture, street isn't noisy and dirty unlike Sunset Blvd, and it's a few blocks from the beach) but it is too expensive for most single people to live in now and so far from the Silver Lake+Los Feliz+Echo Park and eastward region that I mentioned above where so many flock to now. If it weren't for the entertainment industry, I think LA wouldn't be worth it right now. Even if you have money, there are nicer places to live in California and that region but the issue is the weaker job market and a lot fewer single people, especially trendier / hipster types, move to them since they all got to live in the same few coolest places in the US for their social status.

      I think its an endless cycle, we are so densely populated AND a huge tourist attraction that its hard to keep it all together? Also, I love pasadena! I almost moved there! I think it was the perfect blend of living close to the city but still having a "slower" pace life!

    Ok so I got a job in LA it starts in about 3 weeks. I have a vehicle and 500 bucks. Where can I park my vehicle and sleep at night? Any safer places to park? How is parking? I'm a single female and I'm getting kinda worried. I do a have a planet fitness membership that I can take showers there but any advice from anyone would be great. My new job is $21 hr which is decent but I'm still worried. I'm from the central valley of California so it's only a 2 hr drive from where I am. It's not like I'm traveling across country. 😕 but still any advice from anyone please please and thanks 😊
