I swear to god almost every quest in this game is such a headache
Some are I agree but some aren't really meant to hold your hand
@@Keyshawn13 The objectives however are sometimes less than helpful like "Gather evidence and apprehend the abbess". I thought I needed to bring the evidence back to the Beastren guy who was in the sick room in the basement. When that didn't work I went to the Captain of the guard dude we've been working with the whole time, he didn't have any prompts either so was stumped, turns out I just had to physically grab the abbess in order to finish the quest.
+100 Hours trying to figure out an ungodly amount of unnecessarily confusing and mostly impossible to guess - missions

I totally just grabbed Hugo and defeated the guards. He needs a job now.

for those who didnt find brefft in jail, i did the following:
talked to Hugo
talked to the guard watching Hugo
bride the guard 1k gold
sleep 1 day
went to the oxcart to talk to Benjamin, he came and said there is another Coral Thief in jail.
declined the second bribe.
and the Brefft dialogue started.
If Brefft is not in the gaol for anyone, go back to Benjamin (he is close to the oxcart station), he tells you they caught another Coral snake dude. He appears in the gaol after that

That's not what he's doing with me, he keeps telling me to try and get more info out of hugo
You need to do the quest Tolled to Rest I think. You help a NPC named Oskar by the Ancient Battlegrounds north of Checkpoint Rest Town. I did this quest and waited a few days and Benjamin came to me and told me another Coral Snake was imprisoned. I'm not sure what else may be dependent on this, but I did the quests in this guide including tolled to rest and got the update.

Well Hugo died. Usually timed quest are noted by an hourglass signaling that it is a timed quest but this did not ever have the hourglass icon. Once he escapes make sure to immediately head to ancentral battleground or whatever that last location is called, where you fight Lanzo. Between his escape and heading to the last location I romanced Whilhemina and he ended up dying. Couldnt backtrack so it is what it is.
Warning as soon as Hugo breaks out immediately go after him. The quest all of a sudden becomes timed with no sandclock showing up next to the quest title and he's able to die if you take to long.
My only complain... why not show the sandclock? I had no idea it was timed eventhough it sounded I like I should chase him, I didn't cause there was no sandclock... now they both dead
Fuvk………he ded ded, i got there and there were only a couple bandits but no sight of fugo or his boss…….I had such a perfect run with nothing going wrong…
Also he does and does not go to morgue. Checked both and he’s not there.
There’s a better ending for Hugo if the do the “Short Sighted Ambition” quest which is close to Town in Battahl. He’s the shop owner, buy any of his items to start the quest, get the Good ending then start the Hugo quest. Now you will have two job options to give Hugo. 👍
Can you explain a Lil more please cause I missed the side quest "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" and i jus finished the coral snake mission

Brefft wasnt here for me, though i hadnt done the bow quest yet either. Instead i had a guy called Ashe here, who didnt say anything. I opened the gate for him and he said something about being ticklish and ran away... not sure how to progress here.
Had the same experience, if you figure it out please let me know

@@denniswu427 yo, i just found the Ashe guy in The Wanderer's Haven tavern in Bakbattahl. Not sure how to do the Hugo quest, but if youve got a quest where you need to talk to a Coral Snake, you can do that to him.

They should’ve just allowed multiple save data’s. It would allow everyone to back track if things got broken.

It's intentional design, they want decisions to be permanent. Personally I like the idea
So what I do to get around this is I sleep in one of my houses or an inn before doing a big quest that may go wrong. I focus entirely on the quest so if I need to reset I don't lose much progress. If you fail just reload your last inn save.
@@kiituriiIt's an intentional design is a bad excuse, just because it's intentional doesn't mean it's a good design. If I wanted decisions to be permanent I will personally make the choice to not reload my save, me the player, that should be my choice. That is not something that should be forced on me. A good excuse though would be that loading an early save will mess with the pawn levels, I'm not a game developer, but I imagine reloading saves all the time would screw the pawn system up.
@@trankia1224 well a game where I have the option to reload my saves with no consequences will just mean I feel like I should be doing it. Like baldurs gate 3. Felt terrible to accept any bad roll or situation because I knew I could easily reload the save, that's why I really enjoy this design choice.
Also inn saves still exist, if you want to save scum you still can, it's just a more intentional process. And since inn saves still exists we can also assume reloading saves does not mess with the pawn system. This same save system existed in the original dd, it's not new, it's how they want their game to be played, it's not an excuse.
Protip: Hugo is the one NPC where the Sealing Phial (Sphinx Questline) actually comes in handy. Progress his quest up to the part where he gets jailed and then tell him about Lanzo's shady dealings w/ his parents. As soon as you exhaust that dialogue, use the phial on him and proceed to Lanzo's hideout (Ancient Battlegrounds) and kill Lanzo. Do NOT open the phial. Hugo will appear on his own seeking vengeance, but you've already done the dirty work. Best part is when Hugo shows up is the Sealing Phial is returned to your inventory, INTACT!. 😁😁😁
I got a second pair of the frosted edges daggers at the end of this? Not sure if that’s supposed to happen but I already grabbed them from the gang hideout earlier in the quest
Brefft isn't there for me. Thought mayhap he died during the assault on the coral snakes base, checked the bakbattahl morgue, not there either.
I walked in behind that guard then for some reason all the other guards jumped me so i killed them all
You have to have a residence permit on you at the time.
I completed this game but this is by far the HARDEST one to complete. It's still not finished.
The oracle tells me to resurrect Brefft but he's not in the Battahl Morgue.
When I go to the prison, everyone attacks me, even though I had bribed the gaurd.
When I go to the Ancient Battleground, no one is there.
Trying to complete this quest is harder than completing the game!

The reason the guards attacked you is because you may have left the authorization paper to enter Battal in the box
Or you may have went at night
Yeah, Lanza is not spawning in at the ancient battleground for me, check during day, in the morning and night. I’ll attempt it next play through.
same happen to me, sad to say it means you're too late. If you go back to Bakattahl near the oxcart area by the palace there is a guard walking around. If you appoarch, he'll come up and inform you that it's been a few days and they decided to raid the anicent battleground, however when they got to the hideout, they only manage to find the mortally wounded body of the leader and hugo. Leaderless the snakes are no longer and issue. Which he'll proceed to reward you and that's the end of the questline.
I cant continue the quest, because i open the jail for hugo and everyone attack me after that no trigger to continue the quest until hugo ask' dp ypu think there s work for me out there?' and nothing i can do after that
You can't speak with Hugo at 2:33 as he is too far from the door. If you unlock it your attacked. I spoke with Breft first as directed. Did the other quests already. so what's up?
'i got stuck with the guard just saying "this stuff takes time blah blah" after giving him 2500. i just decided to open hugos door and carry him out of the gaol. the guards got mad but there are no consqeunces to just leaving with hugo on your back. then i gave hugo a job at isaacs shop, the potion shop in bakbathal
how’d you get him to work at isaacs
@@dankdevil6855you need to speak with him (maybe after buying something can't remember). and you need to do his quest and get the bad ending, basically he wants a book and you give him a fruit and then the book he wants
I used the keys of the prison in another door and now its gone
@@nicolem3951you can find keys in most potionshops, if its soldout just sleep some and it'll restock
@@nicolem3951if you restart at any point, the gaol key that Brant gives you for the magistrate quest in Vernworth works for every jail cell in the game, so it's good to get a copy as it isn't a consumable item like the makeshift gaol keys.

It’s cool you can give him different jobs, I did the quest where you find the soul tome for that shop keeper and then after finishing that, the shop was closed for a bit but I was able to give him a job there!

I can confirm that u don't need to do the courtesan's quest to get Hugo a job.
You can do Issac [the apothecary's quest, item shop in bakbattahl], give him the fruit + book [not the fake/forged one] , and the shop will be closed.
Then you can propose Hugo to go become an apothecary/shopkeeper and it works!! I was on a time crunch and didnt want to do the romance for her.
So this worked well for me.
idk if he will ever go to ur house and ask to be ur traveling companion though. Prob not???

You can give Issac a fake book or something very, very bad is going to happen(ho him and his family). You can make fakes in checkpoint downs from where you can buy the second part of the book. So if you want a good ending for that quest, you must not give him the book.

There's a Quest named Short-Sigted Ambition in Bakbattahl that you get by buying something of a merchant named Isaac, that after completed gives you the option of another job for Hugo.
I was doing Mercy Among Thieves but when i finished the last room of enemies, hugo doesn't show up, the guards that were supposed to join you are still and don't talk to me (they didn't join me in the battle, they showed up after i killed all the enemies), The mission is broken and there is no way to complete it, I guess, right?
I was informed by guards that Hugo and the leader fought and killed each other. Super randomly. Not really sure what to think of that.
I bribed the "gaoler" and visited the Ancient Battleground, where I was attacked by the Coral Snakes, as it was their second new hideout. However I wasn't there for that, I was going to the Sphinx. So I hoped ignoring them and running past them wouldn't mess anything up. I'm guessing that somehow messed things up though.
I don't have a job for him now so where would I find him later to give him one?would've been nice for you to put the thing I should have done from the beginning IN the begging.

You can do the every rose has its thorns quest for chick in brothel in main city in Venmond. It gives Hugo a job at the brothel. I'm at this same point. He's standing at the battlefields place as I didn't have a job lined up for him. They structured these quests backwards. U shouldn't get this quest if you already haven't gotten others quests that this one connects with. It's frustrating.
did everything up until the ancient battleground but where the quest marker is there is no one? so where lanzo is supposed to be for the fight just nothing happens...
So i can get his job ? I did everything but in the moment he ask me about a job i dont have any to tell him. Where can i get it ?
Every time I walk into the gaol they just start killing me so I can’t finish the quest
I can’t find Brett I did the mercy among thieves first and then I did shadow of prayer after but I can’t find the Brett guy
So for me i had to go and do the quest for wilhemina first and when i came back hugo was in the middle of his cell staring off into the distance. I couldn't talk to him and couldn't progress the quest. Currently trying to work out the problems.
So I fixed my problem, you have to talk with the assassin and the coral snake guy. Only then will Hugo come up to the cell so you can inform him and progress the quest. I'm just a little dumb lol.
Nice Guide… but when i try to Go in the jail the guards just atack me and lock me up… is there some Armor that i can wear like in the other one? I cant Talk to the boy since they evan atack during the conversation…. But u Need to do the quest to unlock the oxcart for the town. Im Kind of lost…
Ok so is there a bug with mine ? The guy let me into the jail and said the same thing but once down there all the other guards start attacking me no clue why no matter how many times i reload save or sneak in as soon as im seen im in combat

im stuck on this right now, up to the mercy among thieves quest. I gave the boy the food long ago but never followed up and now i dont have the npcs i need there.
u can still find them near the gate at day. just get close to them
Nothing in your video has happen in my run. I went after the bandits, he kicked hugo down fron the leader and he went to jail. I visited him, then I had to payout the guard commandwr twice and since then nothing is happening. I came back after a few days…. Nothing! Any ideas?
Same happened to me. As a last resort I just opened his cell hoping he would run out later or something. The guards jumped me, I killed them, then I literally just carried Hugo out of the jail. He then walked to under my residence in Bakbattahl and stood there until I found him a job to do. He revealed to me later when I gave him a job that he already talked to the other criminal guy and he is at peace with his life and his past and thanked me. By the way the job I gave him is also different from the one in this video, I did the quest of Isaac in Bakbattahl, the potion vendor. After that quest, Hugo can take his place as the new potion vendor. I won't spoil the potion quest in case you haven't done it yet.
I just grabbed the key and freed him by force, knabbed him and took him out, got the dailogue option to tell him to go work somewhere but didn't have anywhere to send him. I had an inn save before going to the jail. Gunna try doing Isaac's quest at the apothery (buy something from him) fail it so he leaves and then tell hugo to work there.
What's crazy for me is that I didn't even know all this was a thing I came across the gang side quest right when I entered battahl and did that side, quest right away, ran into the leader Lonzo but as we all know, the quest goes cold after you go to the city and talk to them about it, and I had no more questions regarding that I just ended up exploring, and found myself at the jail and saw both Hugo and the other guy there just organically never knew I was supposed to go there, which that led me to getting that quest marker to go to ancient battlegrounds, but I took my sweet time and didn't know it was time so I failed (technically it says completed on my quest list,)with a guard approaching me, saying that everyone's dead
Dietrich is attacking me, maybe because i went there long before the quest started to go to bakbattahl how do i stop him being aggressive I tried killing just him for resurect but then the other guards become agressive too
Weird the guy you talk to out front didn’t say he’d distract the jailers but he knew I was going to see him but then when I went in there he just started attacking me… and so I killed all the guards freed Hugo but there’s no prisoners or quest pop up… so my only option is to tell him to go to the myrmecoleon… so quest over?
i did all 3 quest but no breft in jail.. is there another way around this??
Has this happened to anyone? Hugo escaped from Gaol when I went back for him. I had just told him the truth about Lenzo from Breft. Now the quest marker is at Ancient Battlegrounds, when I arrived at the exact spot, Lenzo is not there. But the gold quest marker still is there. Do I need to activate something else?
Don’t know if it was mentioned but if you did the isaac quest before you can give hugo isaacs store to work at.
Plus you pay 5 percent less gold for items at said Store

well i did the opposite,
bribe the guard,
took the key from his desk,
grabbed the guard watching Hugo,
moved far away and drop him.
Open Hugo cell (moke sure the pratoling guards dont see you)
Grabbed Hugo and sprinted outside
Talked to him and offer the Brothel job
Mission Completed
Breft isn’t in the jail for me. Idk why. Can someone help?
Hugo just repeats the same dialogue, " Thats why i did the things i did. Understand? And i dont believe for a moment that Lanzo meant what he said to me in the hideout- 'twas all an act. So if youre waiting for me to talk, cos, dont hold your breath".
Ive given the hermit of whom was attempting the assasination the gold bribe and he has new dialogue of which he says, "Listen to this, cos, With the coin ye been given me, im getting moved some olace nice.
In Vermond i will not be locked up in a filthy cage, you can count on that".
Braff only says "Hmpf"

I paid the Gaol master two times and he just sat there and did nothing after the second payment. Literally stuck. I guess hes not letting him go lol.

I just picked up all the guards and threw them down at the end of the halls and unlocked Hugo's cell. Once u open the cell door, no one gives two fucks. I just walked in, picked Hugo up, and walked out. Lol, I only found myself here because if you get him "released" he asks me to find him an "honest" way to make a living, and I have no idea where to go from here.

@@Kiyamlolmy solution was just opening the door and carrying hugo while the guards attacked me, but i just tried to pick hugo up and left when the guards missed me

Hugo left the prison and Breff disappeared so I assume he killed him but the quest isn't updating to battle field area
Already spoke with Brefft and Hugo is still standing away from the cell door so I can't speak to him.....
Finally figured it out, talking to Brefft once isn't enough. You need to start dialogue with him multiple times.
I did everything but brefft isn't there.
Soooo my pawn killed the entire city and I managed to receive whoever I felt was important but this guy who was arrested is not in his sail 😅 now idk what to do

For anyone who cant find brett but instead some guy named ashe, release the dude and grab the seeker token inside. Go outside and wait 1 day, then speak to guard by the ox cart, he will tell you a new coral thief was captured.
Okay but what if I did “mercy among thieves” directly when I was on my way to BakBathaal? Let me tell yall the steps that I did :
1- Cross the gate with a permit so I can enter and be on my way to Bakbathaal.
2- I hear guards talk near the gate and the about the coral snakes, a group of bandit and that their hideout is near.
3- Always near the gate I talk to an orphan, feed him twice and boom I meet Hugo.
4- On my way to BakBathaal, I come across an old man that asks me to save his child (I also meet Benjamin the knight commander) from the coral snakes and that their hideout was just ahead, I went in there, saw Hugo, raided the whole hideout, captured Hugo, Lanzo escapes and then Benjamin brings him to jail.
5- I arrive in three city and then meet Benjamin again, he asks me to talk to Hugo so I can get more info, I go in there talks to him but there’s not Brefft and let me remind you I did the quest even before coming in the city.
6- I tried to bargain with the guard to let him out, pays him twice and still tells me to this day to wait. Meanwhile I did the quest where you have to protect the empress and find out who’s the assassin. Captured Herman and putted him to jail too, so I went back to the prison area and it’s still the same with Hugo.
7- Meanwhile I also did the apothecary quest just so he can work there, Hugo is still not out.
8- After this video I went to the ancient battle ground but cannot find Lanzo.
So for the life of me, I do not know what to do please help me…

Lol exactly what’s happening to me now wasted so many ferrystones trying complete this one quest. Im about to just try and kill all the guards and just break hugo out at this point.
It's possible, I have not done the Flickering Shadows but the other quests you mentioned, and I defeated the boss and didn't tell Hugo the truth. I didn't want to get killed. I am trying not to kill anyone. If not the last result, and I will have to bring everyone back to life...
Yeah I did all 3 of those quests already and no Brefft for me. I tried talking to Benjamin but he just talks about getting info from Hugo. Bribed Herman and he said the assassination job went through the coral snakes. I’ve got no clue what to do

I paid 2500 gold to speak to Hugo again while the guard man says he’ll try to get him released so then I broke Hugo out, there’s also a makeshift gaol key in the office by the entrance. And carried him outside and offered him a job as the new wares guy because of the outcome of another quest I did where you give the grimores to the wares guy in battal and basically I kinda liked my outcome as no one new stepped in as the store owner

The tolled to rest quest is broken for me. Oskar just disappeared and I cannot finish the quest. Meaning that this quest is also broken for me.

you have to talk to the starving kid at the checkpoint rest town [the side with the desert area], give him food, and then you'll meet hugo, go to an ambushed caravan and it stems from there.
This game is a 7.5 out a 10 because of busted quest like this one! Hugo just stands there and doesn’t even move after I’ve tried all different scenarios.
I killed Dietrich the guard earlier on accident never noticed and had to revive him to complete the quest lol was kinda cool
I unlocked his cell and grabbed him. Ran out of there and no one even noticed now he’s walking off so I’m here to see if I’ll be able to find him later on.
I took too long when the prompt to kill Lonzo came, busy distracted with other things, then I went back to the town when some of the guard (Benjamin) said that Hugo & Lonzo fought till they both are slain, that's the end of the quest for me lol..

So i didnt pay the guard to free hugo. I rested in my house in batthal and went to the ancient battle grounds and lazo or hugo isnt there. I went back to the jail and hugo isnt there and the guards keep saying hugo isnt here. So am i locked out or is there something else i need to do since i didnt pay the guards to free him? Ive tried resting more days and lazo still isnt at the battlegrounds to fight
Im almost in your situation, hugo escaped and lanzo there isnt in ancient battle.. i dont know how to complete this quest.. sure miss something..
@@texwiller8487 i saw another video about it. Apparently, after some days, some guards in bakbattahl are supposed to approach us and say hugo is dead and the quest is completed. Idk where we run into them, whether its the jail or the middle of the capital of battahl

Yeah same this whole quest was a mess for me I just killed the guards after carried Hugo out. A couple of npc’s weren’t available or doing what they were supposed to do

I got the ancient battlegrounds step, but Hugo/Lanzo is not at the location so it seems to be just fucked for no reason.

My first play through no problem ng+ Brefft doesnt spawn in jail... WTF they are doing Capcom ?

Learnt that shadow prayer is a completely different subquest and it's not necessary for pilfered path
when you start the pilferd quest dont speak to anyone go back to sleep 1 day then go to where the ocscart are you find benjamin he will tell you they caught someone and ask you to speak to hugo then sleep another day and go to the jail and you first bribe the guard and you will find breft there speak with him first and bribe the and herman otherwise you will be stucked in not finding breft
In my case, I could choose between the brothel and Isaac's Shop for the honest work part. I suppose it became a choice after you completed Isaac's quest regarding the transmigration book (quest 4:56).
Should have said that you need to romance her before actually reaching that point.....
To anyone who has troubles with finding the other guy in the cell, try speaking with benjamin a guard at bakbattahl just by the ox cart

Fun bug. When I went to fight Lanzo in the battlegrounds he took one swing and disappeared and Hugo said I killed them all.
I pissed of the jailer by unlocking everyone's cell so I'm not allowed back in. Luckily you can sneak back in through the laboratory (use a disguise) and use a staff to fly behind hugo's cell. Don't forget to pilfer hugo's trickster headpiece.
I went to visit the battlegrounds before i told hugo about his parents and lanzo attacks. I loaded my save just before and headed back to battal.
Now to find out if I've messed this up lol.

for some reason lyssandro is not in his usual spot at the checkpoint rest town and he wont give me the quest when i do talk to him. DD2 is definitely one of the more frustrating games i've ever played, sometimes i ask myself why I'm even playing it.
I’m unable to move forward with talking to Hugo. The guard leads me in, and they all automatically start attacking me. Has this happened to anyone else?
It happened to me! To fix this I got a makeshift gaol key, opened his cell and carried him out. To deal with the guards I just killed the main one (with the mohawk) and revived him with a wakestone, and his aggro stopped
@@kenji8985 Thanks! I just figured out why it was happening and I think I “fixed it.” I didn’t complete the Nation of the Lambent Flame quest, so I didn’t get the residence permit. Now that I did it, it makes sense why they’d attack me lol.
i did the snakes, then the assassin, but i never spoke to him in jail, i spoke to Hugo 1st and then Brefft and Hugo again, but i didnt go to battlegounds and later was informed that he escaped and died gettting his revenge
i couldnt find lanzo when i arrived……… is this a timed quest?
Yep, if you are late a guard in Bakbattahl will explain you that they raided their base and killed everyone there
Can also send him to Isaac’s shop in battahal if you gave Isaac the grimoir in his quest
I am at the point where i need to go to the ancient battle ground to kill lonzo but lonzo never spawns, is this a soft lock?
You have to find Benjamin the guard who initially gave the quest check the taverns in bakbattahl
I did the prerequisite quest and when I talk to the Herman dude he just says the same single dialogue every time bruh this is so annoying

Talked to braft, slept, and returned. Noone in jail. Not even a guard
If you don’t finish and let it will carry on into unmoored world Hugo goes free into a cave I never went to save him to see what happened but it sent a marker on my map to do so
All the guys are in the cells but hugo is facing away from it. His back facing the cell so i cant talk to him. I did all the quests including issacs book quest. At least the 1st part. I'll do part 2 and see what happens
ye, the gaurd talked to me about the prisoner at the entrace, but that never gave me a quest. iam now down in the prison, with the guard, hugo in his cell but not standing in the door, hes on the oppisite side of the room and never moves. great. i can talk to the other prisoners, brafft and the assassin but that doesnt change anything for hugo.. thats she third quest in this game thats kinda broken and since this games doesnt have that much, it really hurts
