Maman Angeline's memory leaves her most days, but sometimes, when the taste of one of her old recipes hits her tongue, something sparks and she remembers... even if only for a few moments. Warly promised himself he would always be there for the times she shined through the clouds, and cooks her his favorite dishes from childhood each night in hopes of getting the chance to visit with dear old maman.

My Grandma passed away two days ago after living for ten years with Alzheimer's. This was two of the most beautiful minutes of my life.

So heres a good few things I learned about Warly.
When he inspects a boomerang, he states that he was separation anxiety.
His mother is all alone, and Warly use to be her provider.
Now put that together and I can see Warly just being always depressed all the time, and his coping method to handle the stress is cooking meals that remind him of home.
Yeah and I thought Wendy was the saddest character ever.

Warly was always my husband's favorite, being that he's a self-proclaimed chef.
His mom was recently diagnosed with brain cancer that quickly took her quality of life, but before it killed her he made her a meal- And even though she couldn't hardly eat, she could smell. One of the last happy moments I saw was of her watching him cook wistfully, enjoying the smells of the kitchen and wanting to eat that home-made meal.
I watch this and grieve, but am also really glad that he gave color to her gray world one last time. Thank you, Klei.

I had a grandma who passed away, but she had dementia, and she couldn't remember me or my brother on my father, not even his brother, so it was kind of sad, I say kind of because she wasn't that close to me, I only visited her on occasion for my dad but she was sweet, a little slappy but sweet. THEN MY DOG DIED OF KIDNEY DISEASE A YEAR AFTER.

With most of the characters, they all have desires and wishes and deals they make that land them in the Constant. Walter, Winona and Wes are like... the only confirmed ones to have arrived by complete accident that we know of so far. Odds are that Warly also made a deal with Maxwell, and judging by this video, he probably wished for his mother to get better, which is just...sad.
Judged by his character info, he may of done... "Those moments became fewer and fewer, Warly tried desperately to find new memories for her all waiting for a visit from the dear old maman. That was until he heard the voice on the radio..."
Wigfred is also one due to making a deal with Maxwell
Walter gets tricked into the constant while trying to find the werebeaver, you could believe that he got sucked in by touching the radio but I think it is more likely that that is an artistic representation, otherwise that would mean that everything that happens in the shorts is exactly to fact and Maman literally cant see color unless she eats potato puree.

Nope. Time doesn't work right in the Constant. Like, for example, Wagstaff was in there during Maxwell's reign, but Winona, despite coming in pretty close, time-wise, was there during Charlie's reign.
@@ChadtronicFan Citation needed. Winona literally gets dragged into the portal by pre-DST Charlie so no she did not enter the constant during Charlie's reign. Time might go faster on the Constant but seeing as Walter and Wigfrid's shorts both show that time is passing in the real world it probably isn't anything that ridiculous.

She has dementia and needs help with almost anything
Whenever I play piano to her, she recognizes it and me
I was heartbroken after she died and now I know that’s the main reason I play piano.

My grandfather had Alzheimers and he used to be a professional pianist. I began playing his favorite songs for him on the violin and he was always so happy and knew it was me. He passed away a few years ago, and I've continued playing the violin every day since.

@@DownpourIsHereFR Well... his mother clearly suffered from some form of Dementia, and only ever remembered her son when she ate his meals, since they were a reminder of how she'd cook for him once. Therefore: cooking is the main way he's solved his problems as he's grown older.

For the first time we get to see through the eyes of characters with a family and how the family is affected by the characters leaving into the constant... crap this hit harder then it should have but this is truly beautiful.
According to some of the comments, warlys mother (or whoever she was to him) had Alzheimer’s, so if this is true, then maybe she doesn’t even remember him. Do you think the characters who are pulled into the constant are chosen if nobody will notice they are missing, or am I reading too much into it? If I remember correctly, Wes and Wolfgang may have been taken after a train accident or something, so they were assumed to be dead.

Those posters could be put up for those taken that weren't "dead" to the world. So there's a difference between being noticed as missing, and people caring that someone is missing
I love how the colors represent Warly’ Ma’s memory, it gives off such such a depressing tone when her memory fades and Warly vanishes into the constant

The visual of his ma’s lesser perception being broken by the sounds and the smells, and finally being brought all the way back into focus from the soup for her kid nearly made me cry…
I just know realized the colors and quality are meant to represent her memory. Damn Klei this hit such feels. Warly wasn't the only thing The Constant took, it took her happiness. :(
Its actually really dark because after it took him, she must've lived the rest of her days more or less as a lonely forgetful woman.

that ending with the record player becoming distorted, howling shrieks of trumpets sent shivers down my spine. that was especially haunting with Warly being there one second, then just... gone the next. Klei is great at horror when they need to be.

The worst part about this is that Warly's mother quite possibly thinks that Warly forgot and left her, leaving her to starve while Warly's stuck in the constant which his mother obviously doesn't know
This is exactly what it's like to have loved ones with Alzheimer's. I watched as my grandma, the sweetest woman in the world, slowly faded until all that was left was a body. There were times just like this where she'd come back for a few brief moments and be gone the next minute. I know this was just a trailer for a game but I appreciate you sharing the reality of how horrible a disease it is.
yeah, I know a woman who got diagnosed pretty early (at 56 last year). her husband cant all ways take care of her and because were close friends she sometimes drops by and stays here for a while (her mother cant take care of her without getting extremely stressed and she doesn't want strangers in her house so no care takers) we sometimes play video games together and it just hurts to see her get worse with every visit. Like she's such a happy, friendly and funny woman I cant even begin to imagine in how much pain her husband is.
Yea... when I has born she already was fading away, I never got to truly know her for what my mother and everyone told me of how nice and kind she was...
Im very sad about that thats very bad, my mom had cancer she looked like a skeleton the last time I saw her.

I love the way this was made. It shows just how much Warly has an affect of this womans life he brings colour to her world. It makes it so much more impactful with these visuals
In case you never realised:
She has alzheimer's and can't remember anything properly. At first she doesn't even know who he is. But his cooking brings her memories back and they enjoy some time together. Until the smell of his cooking is gone, and she forgets who he is again.

I think if the devs ever add a escape option all characters will have they’re own endings like warly returning to his mother etc.
I seriously hope time hasn't advanced a lot if that happens, because otherwise warly will have a very sad ending when he sees the skeleton of his mother.
Daridon248 I read in another comment that one of Maxwell’s quotes is “time doesn’t quite work here,” so hopefully it only passes the time it takes Warly to wash the bowl and spoon.
Okay, if the game eventually gets a real ending, it should be with the Ancient Gateway. You should have the choice to leave and skip to the next world with everything in your inventory (like in single player with the teleportato) or have everyone escape and the characters they each play get their own short for coming back home.
Wilson pops up back in his attic, Willow is in her apartment, Wolfgang is helping set up a circus tent, Wendy runs out to hug her father, WX returns to Wagstaff at a lab, Wickerbottom writes and publishes a book about her experience, Woodie goes back to cutting and selling logs, Wes becomes a well known mime to the city he lives in, Maxwell retires from being a magician and never touches magic again, Wigfrid becomes a famous actor, Webber lives in a dirty attic with spiders, Winnona rebuilds her factory, Warly goes back to caring for his Ma, Walter returns to his Boy Scout troop and tells them about his adventures in the constant and how he met the mysterious Werebeaver himself, and Wortox, Wormwood, and Wurt explore a brand new world that they've never known before.

@@pogfection787 I think Wortox, Wormwood and Wurt should stay in the Constant. It's their home after all. As for Wagstaff, we know for a fact he is trapped in the constant as well, so his ending would be returning with WX to the fabric. As for Maxwell's ending, I think that in order to escape the Constant would be to free Charlie and destroy the Throne, so maybe we could have a nice little scene with them both.
Hits hard, and functions as its own short story. Out of all the don't starve characters you should really do a crowd funded shortfilm on wardly as a Test for a possible feature film with other characters.
Man warly cooking is so good it can temporarily cure dementia
This is the saddest I’ve ever been after watching a CZcams video. Klei is truly skilled at making characters and games with personality.

Rumpiel PL I’d prefer an story based around real-time sadness and not a one around a dead character in strange circumstances; but nonetheless Toby did still make me cry even if it isn’t as sad as something that may occur to relatives with dementia.

This vid and Warly are probably one of the best representations I have seen of what cooking is. How much feels or memories a meal can carry and how cooking for someone else can be one of the best things you can do. Warly himself is also an awesome representation of this, hes for most the best support character in cooperative because his meals have really good effects for him and the other characters. Warly always the GOAT

Warly is such a pure soul
As sad as this is, i think she is better off that way...the tragedy of knowing that her son simply dissapeared into nothingness would be too great for her to bear. She would live her remaining days constantly hoping that Warly would come back only to die without ever finding out what happened to him :(

This has got to be the best short they’ve done yet. I’m a big fan of how they can always illustrate feelings and a story without words. Making color represent happy memories is GENIUS. Hats off to the Klei crew these shorts are truly something.

From other characters backstory of how they got to the constant,its always because they make a deal or just got there by accident,im having the feel that warly ma cured from Alzheimer,as maxwell granted the wishes but with a twist and that is being trapped in a hellish dream,but every other characters got what they wanted,wilson wanted Secretaría knowledge,secret knowledge he got,wendy wanted to see abigail again,and now she is always with her ,etc.
