I still have my original 64 from when I was a kid. I lived in Cobourg ON and that is where the winchester cooey plant was. It was sweet to be able to go to the plant and get parts.
I've got one, too, give to me about a dozen years ago. A farm gun that wasn't looked after very well, so I'm refinishing it. Like it enough that I bought a current 64 with a decent 4X scope on it for a whopping $169! I had a Ruger 10/22 for decades that I sold, as I never really like the 'stubby' feel of it. The 64 doesn't weigh much more but feels like a full size rifle.
This is by far hands down the best budget plinker you can buy. I got one of these back in 2002 I think and it took on more than 12,000 rounds until I regretfully sold it and it never had a single failure. Wonderful rifle I'd recommend it to anyone.

I just bought mine today and immediately fell in love with it. Love the synthetic stock. It flows effortlessly to your shoulder, with an immediate sight picture. I found it to be well balanced, with excellent simple sights. For $99.00, I was expecting less.
I'm jealous you paid less than a hundred bucks for it. I paid $361.59... Jokes aside, I have high hopes for when I first shoot it in a couple of days once I pick it up. If only they would have made the front sight fixed, as well as make the tip of the front sight something other than black. That's where the old Cooeys excelled. They had a wonderful sight picture, good for shooting in low light conditions. I guess we just have to live with the fact that old guns are better...

Let me tell you. I am 20 years old and live in NC so gun rights are looser here. With that being said, I can walk into a Walmart rn, and as long as I don’t have a criminal background, I can walk out with any shotgun or semi auto rifle I want.

I got a savage 64 for Christmas when I was 16 years old, I am now 40 and it's still the .22 I use the most. I have put thousands of rounds through the gun without any issues.
For everyone having feed issues there are 2 things to try.1. Use plated ammo instead of un-plated lead round nose.2. Try polishing the magazine feed ramp lip. It is very small - maybe about 0.1" or so but if the lip is rough it might just hang up a lead round nose shell. I used a Dremel and a small rotary wire brush and polished it smooth. This may go a long way toward solving some feed issues.
My dad bought this as my first rifle when I was 12. Made by Lakefield arms in 1985 - exact same but with a wood stock. Still have it and will pass it on to my own son.
Sold mine a few weeks ago to “upgrade to a Ruger 10/22. I’ve already sold the 10/22, and I’m buying 2 Savage 64s and a scope as soon as I get off work. Nothing against the 10/22-I guess I see what people like-but I just really prefer the Savage 64!
I have had 3 or 4 of these. When I see one in a gun shop or pawn shop for a good price, I pick it up knowing I can sell it someday for a profit. Great rifle. Magazines are easy to get a hold of. Always good for the old timers looking for a squirrel gun, or someone new to shooting. Always a recommendation from me.

This gun in my opinion is made better than the new 10/22 it is just as if not more accurate and compared to the plastic mags that come with the 10/22 this mag is better. Also new 10/22s have a crap trigger. I sold one of these to get a 10/22 and I regretted it. My friend needed a 22 so I made him buy one of these and he absolutely loves it. I'm big on metal so I bought a 1960 Remington 552 and if I ever have to buy another 22 it will be a 64. Unless I want to spend lots of money on something fancy. These shoot like a dream they are just well engineered and there are downfalls, (limited customization), but seriously if you find one for $99 dollars or less you better buy one.
Picked one up for $112 used at a local gun shop to teach several people how to shoot. It accomplished that task with ease. Loaned it to my dad over the summer to deal with pests. shots are between 10 and 100 yards. It decimated the local groundhog population. Now I use it for a cheap day of shooting in the back 40. Some day, I plan to teach my children to shoot and maybe pass it on to them. I think at this point, mine has probably paid for its self multiple times over.
This was my first firearm, bought about 7 years ago. It's been pretty darn reliable and I can't really complain at its price point. They're commonly available at Big 5 Sporting Goods out here on the West Coast.
Just got one of these for Christmas and shot it today. After 100 rounds it was flawless no issues. I love it. Got it for $99 to which you just can't really beat. Fun little plinker
I've had the 64 G variant with a stained wood stock, and a scope for about 11 years now and love it. One nice thing about the 64 G is that it's drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Great gun for sure. The magazine is a little weird, but most .22 LR rifle magazines are IMO. It's definitely not a huge deal. Great review on a great gun!
Savage 64 are made in Canada, tough built and accurate It's dec.2021 here in Canada sale at $159, cheaper than any firearms including 22lr break action single shot, highly recommended
I remember seeing the wood stock 64 in Canadian tire back in the 90's. I see now that they have this model on sale at my local store, think its time to relive some childhood memories.
I got mine the same way you did sootch It was $64.99 and one of the last few In the store and of course I couldn't pass up a firearm for that price I've had nothing but fun with it since
Just bought one. Cycled fine with Remington Goldens, CCI AR15 tacticals, Federal auto match and winchester superspeeds. Only problem was failure to fire 2 out of every 10 or so rounds of winchesters but that is the ammo, not the gun. I do need to scope mine because my vision isnt what it used to be. Overall Im sure the gun shoots better than I can lol.
Picked up one of these just yesterday. Thanks for telling me about this rifle Sootch. I've been looking for an inexpensive semi auto .22 and I think I'm going to be very happy with it. Loyal CA viewer, keep it up!
I bought the Savage 64 TR last week for $199 on sale (up in the Great White North, I know that sucks). Gave it a good cleaning, filed and polished the feed ramp as recommended by many. Mounted a red dot and headed to the range, using Federal Blue Box 525 at 30 & 50 yards I was getting groups no larger than 1/2". I did not experience one single FTF/FTE in the 525 rounds!!! Honest. It seems that I got a shooter. Can't say enough good things about Sootch00, his reviews and recommendations prompted me to buy the Savage 64(TR).can't til the next range trip. God Bless All
Amazing accuracy. Shooting dead on at 100 yards with iron sights using CCI Mini Mag 36gr HP. Taken groundhogs and raccoon with this rifle with ease. Got mine for $90 At Walmart. For the price it's a tack driver!
Really appreciate your video. Great job on presenting the gun and it highlights. I went and bought one at Walmart today for $99 excited to take it to the range.
I love this rifle!!! I have this with the scope it was my first gun i bought four years ago!!! My kids and wife and inlaws love this gun!! So stoked to watch this review!!!
I used to own one I will be buying another one my opinion is I think its better than the 10/22 for the price you really cant find a better .22 riffle at least not one that is as reliable as that one that I know of.
The mark 2 bolt action is fun as well. I got the pre accutrigger model which was sub 150 sticker price at Walmart. I think modern day Savage bolt gun is better than modern day Remington bolt gun. It's a way better bang for your buck that's for sure.
Just picked one up today at Walmart. $133.00 before taxes and it is the camo version. Love the feel of the stock and how light it is. ALWAYS JUST WANTED TO ON A "SAVAGE" because of the name and reputation.. I really like you present your video, so, liked and subscribed. One more thing, God bless the USA and and Thanksgiving to all!

For anywhere from $150-$200 CAD for the G model it's a snag. For $200-$250 you can get the takedown aswell. An absolute steal of a deal! Love these rifles.
Iv'e had one of these guns for 40 odd years mine is a Lakefield same gun . I have had no issues it is my go to gun if I'm going camping just so I have a gun with me .
Thanks again for you honest opinions ... I just got one based on a couple of reviews .. and love it! Always enjoy and trust your reviews. You seem to be one of the more professional sounding/visual videos!
the one i had was very accurate when it wanted to fire. mine would only ever fire 5 our of the 10 rounds in the magazine, it just didn't seem to work well for me. bought new mags, tried different ammo. , i just could get it to work for me , so i sold it and got a ruger 10/22
Just left a comment saying pretty much the same issue, glad its not just me. Poor reliability but pretty accurate. pretty much the definition of a rifle that will piss you off :D lol
shot this thing when I was about 10 years old and pulled it out today after about 8-9 years. I'm 19 now and it still shoots very smooth and accurate. It's got a scope on it too that I didn't even adjust for distance, wind, etc. It's gotta be one of the best beginner rifles out there
I saw one of these at Walmart tonight, for $99.99. A few years back, right before Christmas, Walmart had them on sale for only $79.99 on clearance. I ended up buying the last one they had. I think I have now owned that rifle for either 5, 6, or 7 years now? It has been a great little rifle and has never given me a single issue. I have definitely got my monies worth out of the rifle.
Great rifle, great review... but let's talk about the elephant in the room... when's the review on those sandals coming out? 😂. Jk man, I love my sandals.
+scotianinmotion1Not to worry, rimfire rifles have no magazine capacity limit in Canada...one of the few things that makes sense with regards to our gun laws: www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/bulletins/bus-ent/20110323-72-eng.htm.
I just looked into this inexpensive rifle just out of curiosity, I've never considered it before and I've never owned one this brand I'm referring to. In any event I'm seeing many complaints about now that this rifle is being produced differently they are having a ejector problems. I would hate to have a situation where I need to squeeze off around and nothing happens. I would hate to have that in the back of my mind all the time. After reading all those comments this rifle is now officially off my list. There were too many other options in the same general price range that do not suffer this problem. When your life depends on it or you need to get that shot off why take a chance over a few dollars? That's the way I look at it. Some things in this life make sense to spend a little more money sometimes. Safest thing to do before spending money on anything, research. Now that we have the internet and ways of talking to people all over the world with a box that you carry in your pocket. Ask people Check reviews first.🎯🎯🎯
I just purchased this rifle today. I haven't shot it yet, but it is a very nice little .22. Can't wait to take my daughter out on her first gun shooting session with this bad boy. It is so budget friendly for all that you get!
just purchased one for $160 after tax and background check but since I'm in California they're holding it hostage for 10 days... then I have to buy a cali-approved lock before they'll give it to me, merica!!.....ish
I've got a Savage Model 64, a Mark II, and a Rascal for the kids. All of them are great rifles and a great value, in fact I prefer my Savages to my Ruger 10-22. My kids started shooting at 6 and 7 years old and were popping balloons at 100 yards with that Rascal in no time flat!
Cody Mccall i'll be honest... we would've still believed him even if he just says that thing is steel. Plus he didn't have to pull the flashlight tho 😂 that was a bad scratch too, would've been pissed if that was me scratching my own gun.
My first rifle was a Cooey m64 I still have it. I got a scope on it and an absolutely beautiful cherry coloured stock. I just recently reblued the gun because it had some rust on the barrel under the stock.i have the early mags for it and want to buy a new one.
I just bought the Savage 64 Precision. It is one sharp looking rifle! I ordered it from Sportsman's Warehouse and it arrived in 5 days. It comes with one 20 round magazine. I put a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot optical on it. It also comes with a threaded barrel and a picatinny rail. The barrel is a 16 inch bull barrel. I have put around 300 rounds through it without a flaw. Looking forward to your review on it, I love it!
I personally haven't had a great track record with mine. I bought mine for $119 at a Sports Authority, after about a month my magazines feed lips where completely destroyed, they wouldn't keep the rounds in the magazine at all and popped them off just after 2 rounds of print pressure. On one of my last times shooting it, it began to rain and a very small amount of rain got into my case and on the gun. Just on the 20-30 minute ride home rust had eaten through the bluing on the barrel and now there are pits all along the outside of the barrel. To top it all off there is next to none aftermarket parts for the rifle not even an extended magazine.
Yikes. Savage stamped-steel magazines are sort of notoriously bad; I guess it comes with the price range. I think there may be something wrong with your rifle's bluing; mine is nowhere near that susceptible to rust. (hell, someone spilled a one-quart canteen onto my combat shotgun once and it suffered absolutely no rust)
I your gun is blued it's a given that you should wipe the whole thing down with oil every once in a while and you won't have any problems with rust. I do every time I clean or once a month.
Porty1119 I had multiple firearms that day that where all under the same if not worse conditions as the Savage and they where all fine, not a single thing wrong with them but the Savage was horrible.
aLpha Guns and gaming I do too but It literally happened on a 30 minute car ride home. I make sure to clean my firearms the as soon as I get back from shooting and when I took the Savage out of its case it was already to late.

Savage 64 are made in Canada, tough built and accurate
It's dec.2021 here in Canada sale at $159, cheaper than any firearms including 22lr break action single shot, highly recommended
I remember seeing the wood stock 64 in Canadian tire back in the 90's. I see now that they have this model on sale at my local store, think its time to relive some childhood memories.
I've had mine for 7 years and you can't go wrong.
I got mine the same way you did sootch
It was $64.99 and one of the last few In the store and of course I couldn't pass up a firearm for that price
I've had nothing but fun with it since
Tall Teen what store did you get it from
Allklkjeo
Just bought one. Cycled fine with Remington Goldens, CCI AR15 tacticals, Federal auto match and winchester superspeeds. Only problem was failure to fire 2 out of every 10 or so rounds of winchesters but that is the ammo, not the gun. I do need to scope mine because my vision isnt what it used to be. Overall Im sure the gun shoots better than I can lol.
I heard Sootch is a Cherokee word that means "Man with many guns"
That may be why he chose it but I don't know
I just got one 2/18/23. $130 OTD. Can't wait to shoot it. Thanks, Sootch, for a great video as always.
How do you like it?
@@veecee917 absolutely. It is so smooth and simple to use. Accurate and lightweight
God Bless All
For me it wins over the 10/22 with the bolt control.
So stoked to watch this review!!!
the 22UpLULA with the 1911AI insert add-on makes loading those magazines a brreeze
I used to own one I will be buying another one my opinion is I think its better than the 10/22 for the price you really cant find a better .22 riffle at least not one that is as reliable as that one that I know of.
Grandsons first gun 👌 thanks for the great review.
Right on man I know it was 7 years ago but that was a good review thank you very much
I'm a Marine, no longer on active duty. Looking to own some weapons for fun and self-defense. Would like to also show my daughters and wife how to shoot and respect these weapons... Thanks for your opinions and good info... Stay safe and be good and God Bless... D2
For anywhere from $150-$200 CAD for the G model it's a snag. For $200-$250 you can get the takedown aswell. An absolute steal of a deal! Love these rifles.
Love the price on these, and the cost of operation! thank's for another great video Sootch00!!!...
Iv'e had one of these guns for 40 odd years mine is a Lakefield same gun . I have had no issues it is my go to gun if I'm going camping just so I have a gun with me .
Wow $64 thats insane! Its probably a good gun to get my son started with
jonnytestnj I got mine at Walmart for $125
Sootch You're killin' me. $64.00? That Rocks! Your videos are spot on and really well done. Very Informative too! Love watching them.
Made in Canada eh? 🇨🇦
A Cooey by a different name! A Canadian born design first released in 1964.
I have the Lakefield brand , wood stock version. 👍
Yes made in canada
👍👍💪💪💪💪
obligatory eh
Thanks again for you honest opinions ... I just got one based on a couple of reviews .. and love it! Always enjoy and trust your reviews. You seem to be one of the more professional sounding/visual videos!
a great gun. i love the accuracy on it, and the scope it came with surprised me. it was spot on
Exactly what gentlemen says it fires as fast as you can pull the trigger
the one i had was very accurate when it wanted to fire. mine would only ever fire 5 our of the 10 rounds in the magazine, it just didn't seem to work well for me. bought new mags, tried different ammo. , i just could get it to work for me , so i sold it and got a ruger 10/22
Just left a comment saying pretty much the same issue, glad its not just me. Poor reliability but pretty accurate. pretty much the definition of a rifle that will piss you off :D lol
fun to shoot but i could only shoot two or three rounds and it would jam
shot this thing when I was about 10 years old and pulled it out today after about 8-9 years.
Those are my Keens. At least they're not "Tacti-Flops" Lol!
You guys are too funny😁
hey sootch just wondering if they make a 25 round magazine for it??? Merry Christmas Bro!!
Hey guys,im not positive but I think they just made the 25mag illegal in Canada.
Ask people Check reviews first.🎯🎯🎯
Great review. It's nice to see some reviews on .22 semi auto rifles other than the Ruger 10/22. The Ruger is the king, but there are alternatives.
My Dads first firearm and the first firearm i ever shot. Great shooter, purchased for under $200 at local pawn shop.
WHAT ARE THOSE!!! 0:42
Isai Calderon tactical chanclas lol
Lol
This is a Great Rifle , i have owned mine for 10 years , and it is very accurate.
Nice tactical sandals "Jesus"....good video👍
Tactical Jesus!
Haha I’m never going to California
It's still more gun than you can purchase a lot of other places.
Maryland is strict too. But you get the gun that day unless its a hand gun and then you have to wait 2 weeks.
1911A1lover 45 I live in Michigan walkt out the the door Sam day with 500 ronds and trigger lock was free dam u got it bad there
1911A1lover 45 and it was $ 110
had a Cooey when I was a kid. Just bought the 64f because I was feeling nostalgic.
Great vid for a great rifle
I've got a Savage Model 64, a Mark II, and a Rascal for the kids. All of them are great rifles and a great value, in fact I prefer my Savages to my Ruger 10-22. My kids started shooting at 6 and 7 years old and were popping balloons at 100 yards with that Rascal in no time flat!
So did anybody else notice him scratch THE FUCK out of his gun with the magnet 😂 at 5:00 I mean who cares budget gun.
Cody Mccall i'll be honest... we would've still believed him even if he just says that thing is steel. Plus he didn't have to pull the flashlight tho 😂 that was a bad scratch too, would've been pissed if that was me scratching my own gun.
Cody Mccall he did lol
Needs to put the saftey on even if its not loaded treat it like its loaded
if youre relying on the safety, youre not treating the rifle like its loaded
Yea dont use extra precautions like a saftey wouldnt want you to be overly safe now. Smh
My first rifle was a Cooey m64 I still have it. I got a scope on it and an absolutely beautiful cherry coloured stock. I just recently reblued the gun because it had some rust on the barrel under the stock.i have the early mags for it and want to buy a new one.
i been waiting for this review. This gun is always on sale at Academy.
Can you put a scope on the 64f
Yes you can. I put a Simmons 4x32 on mine. Comes with rings and everything.
Southen Rebel01_ u can buy it with a scope to from website
I have a bsa sweet 22 3-9x40 on mine just need smaller air rifle style scope rings
Yep .. mine actually came with one. A Tasco Rimfire 4X15
Just bought one for my 13-year old's first rifle. $130 at local gun shop. Can't wait to take it out.
In Canada or the USA?
@@dnephin1980 So. California
Thanks Sancho, looking at getting one for my son as well. Found it for $160 in Canada, which is "cheap" here. Enjoy bounding with your boy!
I just had a store save me 1 to pick up tomorrow. I could only get the one with a scope. Should I get it?
Just bought one this evening. Glad I'm hearing good things.
Ive been looking at one in my local shop. Mind me asking what you paid? My local wants $199. Seems a bit high to me.
@@TheMainMan. Yeah that is high. I paid like 120.
@@thegamingchef3304 wow. Okay. Thank you.
hey sootch, where can we get one of those shirts Hickok was wearing on the Instagram photo!?!?
Here's the link. www.1791apparel.com/products/sootch00 Thanks Ian~
thanks man! love your videos. keep up the good work!!!
Just purchased one and let me say hey for the price its at im more than happy i got it overall its smooth to use
My 1st ever firearm I ever purchased. Good little rifle.
