  • Audio-gd's latest flagship replaces the PCM1704 chips with discrete ladder DACs, which are becoming increasingly popular lately. With numerous inputs and the ability to change the programming, the DAC is a tweaker's delight.

    Wow, currawong you impressed me, I have watched some of your earlier video and I would say you improved a lot. Information flow is much more smoother, and as always insightful, truthful and without much bias. Even though still not too interesting but great insight with lots of details. Majority of the people will still prefer reviews like zeos (zreview) and "What Hi-Fi?" just for ease and entertainment but sooner or later solely relaying of the mentioned they will hit a brick wall, as they are over general (for zeos, everything is good) or/and over bias (most things that is not UK is not good enough). Like your review and perspective, keep up the good work.

      Thanks. If I can, I like to do videos in one take, saying what I feel, when I'm ready to say it, like you'd get from having a conversation with someone.

    waited for a long time for this review! I messaged Kingwa to ask about their NFB 28-77 and R2R 7, strangely he indeed said NFB 28-77 and R2R-7 are very close, if I have no preference, he actually suggests me to get NFB 28-77 because it has a preamp and headphone amp, also a bit cheaper. I am going to follow his suggestion and going to get NFB 28-77. For this R2R 7, as the review said, it needs time to warm up in order to get the best out of it. Myself has only half to 1 hour listening time each day, so I cannot afford to give it enough warm up time. Something people might need to consider.

      I don't. Kingwa reckons it makes a huge difference. There are a couple of guys in the R7 thread on HF who have tried both.

    • @Currawong
      @Currawong  Před 6 lety +3

      I reckon I'd need to have the new Yggy Analog here to decide. For me, right now, since DSD isn't important, and I'd rather simplify things, the Yggy.

    How do Audio Gd operate phase inversion ? Generally the user has either a knob on the device or on a remote to trigger the inversion. I don't see anything about this. How do they deal with that ?

    • @Currawong
      @Currawong  Před 3 lety

      They don't have phase inversion. That's something to suggest that Kingwa add though.

    Hello Currawong, as an old owner of Master 7, lately R2R1, I was thinking about buying R2R7. What anyway did catch my interest is your assumption that Hugo2 is more detailed and also more precise in the position of instruments. How do you compare them? What about bass speed/tightness (that is really important to me) which is best? Of course not having any need of headphone amps or preamp I would try qutest which should be the same of Hugo2.

    • @Currawong
      @Currawong  Před 6 lety +1

      I compare them connected and level-matched into various amps, such as the Master 9 or Studio Six. Of course there is a tiny loss of detail from the Hugo 2 as a result. I then use Focal Utopias to listen to well-known high-quality 2-channel recordings such as Friday Night in San Francisco for details such as the decay of guitar notes and the sense of depth to the soundstage. I'm not afraid to admit that the level of differences is extremely small and isn't apparent with most music, and I may be chasing the reason for my feeling slightly different when a different DAC is being used. We're at the stage now that *any* of the DACs available in this kind of price range are all excellent.

    • @Currawong

      Very slightly below (ignoring the power regenerator) because it's a combo unit that shares power supplies.

    Am I correct to conclude that under its accurate mode, R7 sounds better than Spring 2? Your comparisons between Hugo 2 and R7 are also quite insightful.

    • @Currawong
      @Currawong  Před 3 lety +1

      Audio-gd has upgraded the firmware since then, but yes, their FPGA-based over-sampling set-up is better than that of the Spring, which just uses an off-the-shelf chip.

      I actually have original Soekris boards I was going to build into a DAC. I should probably do that. There's also a new DAC I tried briefly in Tokyo which uses Soekris boards, so it may happen eventually.
