Great to see Joni Mitchell's jazz period albums being given some love. They are all of the hghest quality - both musically and lyrically. Utterly timeless as well. Also gratitude for praising Simon & Garfunkel - some excellent songs throughout their career.

    Right on Pete! Joni Mitchell!
The jazz period is my fav era too. I would say from FOR THE ROSES in 72 up through the live SHADOWS and LIGHT in 1980 featuring Pat Metheny.
GRATITUDE by EWF is full of great musicianship.
EWF, The Moody Blues, and Rush were second to none at being able to merge with the times while keeping their overall sound.

Love Hejira a great deal Pete! So cool you are highlighting this beauty - Jaco plays so well! Refuge of the Road a fav! Wow 1973 Mahavishnu I have to hear. Ladies of the Canyon from Joni another mind bending album , so cool you point this out. Morning Morgantown indeed! Absolutely love her vocals and unusual tunings and expert finger picking. Let alone Woodstock, what a version! And of course Blue and For the Roses (love the hippie risqué photo at Big Sur, wow, I’m with David Crosby) all great! Simon and Garfunkel goes without saying - so good!

Nice to see you delving into Joni Mitchell. Apart from just loving her artistry, I 'll always be grateful to her for having highlighted Jaco. The first time I heard him play on Hejira, I was just a teenager but that was like nothing else I had heard before. Have loved him ever since and , well, ...Joni, is just...wondrous.

Nice I see Hijera Joni Mitchell
My second favorite album of hers behind Court and Spark
It's so cool how she aligned up with Jocko out of nowhere and did this Jazz thing for a while.
In fact there's a great concert on CZcams from 1980 or 79 with Pat Metheny and Jocko backing her up and it's awesome

Got the VMP version of Master of Reality last month and been listening to that a ton.
Thanks to the upcoming ranking for Chase, I've been listening to them again as well as a bunch of similar jazz-rock/funk bands (Cold Blood, Tower of Power, Sons of Champlin, Rhinoceros, Lighthouse, Swallow, Brian Auger and the Trinity featuring Julie Driscoll) and Streetwalkers because of the death of one of the members.

Rhinoceros was pretty cool, 3 quality albums (s/t, Satin Chickens & their best Better Times Are Coming). Funky soul, I believe they were a band 'constructed' by their record company, with ultimate ties to Lou Reed, Zappa, BS&T & Iron Butterfly...Been getting more into Tower Of Power lately although I still don't have a lot - but when they were good they were great...Lighthouse is a classic with at least 8 excellent albums...Swallow (the US/Boston band) is pretty obscure, I believe only 2 albums, I have their s/t 2nd album (1973, not bad) - still hunting for their first from '72 called Out of the Nest. They had ties to Atlanta Rhythm Section & Skunk Baxter

Def Leppard, The Monkees, and Opeth.
I saw that one of y'all said nice variety. I was just in I have plans of listening to certain bands entire catalogue. Had fun listening to all of them. Def Leppard never were hair metal, but definitely one of the best bands of the 80s. Plus I have a shirt from them. It looks clean and awesome. I decided to listen to The Monkees since I forgot to listen to them. I was listening to The Byrds again. I listened to them in January, and I thought why not listen to them again. I love The Byrds. Didn't listen to The Monkees last month, so I decided to listen to them, and I did that yesterday. I love these guys. Good Times is a great comeback album. Everyone is gone except for Micky Dolenz. And just today, I decided to listen to Opeth because I was just in the mood. I wanted to listen to Helloween, but seeing how long it would take, I decided to go with Opeth because I like them. They're one of my favorite progressive bands of all time. Number 3, behind The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. I plan on listening to Helloween next week, during spring break. I want to listen to Kreator and Sodom, but I have plans listening to other bands instead. I plan on listening to Manic Street Preachers because they're one of the most underrated bands of the 90s. Plus, they're Welsh. Great band that came out of Wales.

Also, since I'm gonna see them this Saturday in Brasília, I'm listening to a lot of Rotting Christ, a Greek black/death metal band with some great songs in their catalogue! I'm gonna list their most recent compilation 'Their Greatest Spells' (2018), comprising of a 30-year retrospective with songs from all of their albums, and their most recent album thus far, 'The Heretics' (2019).
I almost forgot to mention a Brazilian hip-hop/rap artist called Victor Schiavon (aka Yun Li), who released at the end of 2023 his most recent, and IMO his best, album, 'Biitersweet Memories'. There are some really memorable songs, some are energetic, while other are really melancholic.

Due to his recent passing earlier this week, made a Bobby Tench playlist for myself & have been listening to that for a few days: Gass, early 70's Jeff Beck, Hummingbird, Streetwalkers, Boxer, Hanson (UK), Widowmaker, late 70's/early 80's Humble Pie...

I'm listening to all the Kreator albums in reverse order.
I'm on the fence if I need Destruction, Sodom & Tankard

I also own the Bread Original Album Series set...Joni Mitchell - MILES OF AISLES, a live set with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express is also quite cool. The Joni MINGUS-era album...we all know the players...I kinda recall seeing a pic in DOWNBEAT with a different line-up ; Jaco-McLaughlin-Wayne Shorter-Tony Williams-Herbie...TMK, nothing out there with these guys. Sounds killer. Anybody?

Not a big Mitchell fan personally but that Mingus album has some interesting stuff. Supposedly prior to those recodings she made some "experimental sessions" with Williams/McLaughlin/Hammer/Clarke that (according to Wiki): "...rumored to have been lost, destroyed, or otherwise made unavailable, have become available as bootleg tapes". Check out Jivin' With Joni: The Lost Recordings 1978-1979

As for German thrash try Deathrow's first 3 albums. Riders of Doom, Raging Steel and Deception Ignored. All released on Noise. Better than Sodom.

Man I hope Pete gives Dylan a chance. Seriously, if you understand that his lyrics timeless. And Highway 61 Revisited is just a genius masterpiece album.
Then go to Blood on the Tracks and Desire.
Some of the best albums ever made.

@@truckerkevthepaidtourist yeah, but I didn’t think there was hope for me either. I hated his voice and harmonica growing through my metal and hard rock phase, but I’m glad I saw the light when I did.
It’s just master class art and genius songwriting. He will be studied and talked about alongside the Beatles generations from now.

Coincidentally was just listening to Y&T's Free To Roll: Santa Barbara '85 King Biscuit Hour - not great sound quality (might be a boot) - high energy. Meniketti's On The Blue Side is a nice departure from the heavier Y&T sound, more bluesy (naturally) but still features some blistering guitar. I actually prefer this blues/rock stuff to Y&T, the attack/aggressive style reminds a bit of Gary Moore's approach to blues (and that's a VERY good thing)...
Jazz Q is a pretty cool Czech band that's proggy/jazzy/psyche, I've got two 70's albums: Watchtower & Symbiosis (those are the English titles), they've got at least a handful more releases. Following those band members down the rabbit hole leads you to a bunch of good proggy/jazzy bands like: the aforementioned Energit, Bohemia (some Zappa vibes & Tull - I focus on the instrumentals), Collegium Musicum (some interesting tracks, think ELP but not quite as 'overblown' & with more guitars...but you know what you're in for when the first track on the first album is a 22 minute suite),
A Bread ranking episode? Yes! Not into their poppy/schmaltzy hits but their early stuff (1969-72) is good plus 1977's Lost Without Your Love...Pete getting into Simon & Garfunkel! A Bob Dylan appreciation episode can't be far off...just kidding😎
