    I just like art. I used to just like one type of art... realism. I basically just paint realism because I totally suck at abstract. You're good at it and I can appreciate it.
    I like your personality. You seem to be up front and honest and I can appreciate that as well. You're funny, too. I know when I watch your channel I will end each video with a smile on my face.
    I don't need to sell my work, but I have friends and family that think I should. I don't want the pressure of turning what I love doing into a chore by having someone else control what I do and when I do it. I'm serious about my work, but I am not a business person.
    I recently put some of my work in a shop. If it sells, great. If it doesn't it's not going to manipulate my psychi. I don't really care. Lol. I will still enjoy what I do and why I do it.
    I hope you make all you are capable of making because your mind is in the right place.
    I see a desert landscape in this painting. Reminds me of the Southwest. Very nice.

    Thanks for using my images for this video (David M). I don't understand the grey/red circle piece either but it "emerged" out of a test of watercolor on a gel plate. Something you're not supposed to do. I appreciate your videos because they are about making art and not the art industry/system & they are like Mark Twain or Kurt Vonnegut's writing; funny with a purpose.

    I love the coral. I'm not an artist. I am a science that does art bc mental health haha. I worked in sales for 10 yrs and hated myself and my life and went back to school. I do think there is a way to connect some kind of care in work beyond money and I think it is literally a thing we need to not become broken ppl. It may not be in the product but in assisting or organizing. However, I think there are unethical things that will destroy us. So we work- don't love the job, but if it requires we do bad things, manipulative deceitful things- that will hurt us in the long run. Almost killed me.

      That's a bad situation to be in. I may not love lighting but I do love engineering and designing so I do enjoy my job. I am a somewhat multifaceted artist. Ie., it depends on my mood most times. I may one day tend to paint with a touch or a crap ton of whimsy, then another day a lot of loose “suggestion” of my focal point with some spattering of realism to mix things up. I don’t pretend to be a portrait artist, unless one is looking,for a caricature! Lol I don’t take myself too seriously and I paint and create for the love and relaxation of it, nothing more.

    It’s a tough decision. I teach watercolor and gouache classes at a local studio, so I do make money from my art. Most of the students are 50+. I want to teach technique, color theory, you know, how to paint but those classes don’t sell. They want project based classes where they go home with a finished painting. Even when I paint for myself but I’m always thinking about how to simplify it for a class.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Most of the 50+ crowd just want to unwind and enjoy creating. Nothing wrong with that. Bringing joy to people who need it. Can you find a local school to advertise in for younger aspiring artists who may want to learn some of the more technical aspects of art? You can also find referral partners that will promote painting for you if you promote pottery for them, or whatever they do.

    I’ve been reading that things like Instagram and stuff are being used to take peoples art and train AI and that computers will be making art. Do you have any thoughts on this?

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před 2 měsíci +1

      You just made it into the next Q&A video. 😜
      Yes, I do have an opinion on it. I know people like to use the word "AI" but they focus on the "intelligence" word without acknowledging the "artificial" word. The only thing you can get from a program is what you program into it. The programmer feeds other peoples art into a computer and then tells the computer how to manipulate it and spit it back out. Normally, I do not have a problem with that. People have used Photoshop for many years. You can find royalty free images and manipulate them to create art or you take those images and paint from them. Those are other peoples art that you use to create your own. However, you have permission to use that art. So I don't have a problem with someone creating a program that takes in art and manipulates it to create something new so long as they have permission to do so. I also think this is where digital art has its major plus and it's main downfall. It can be used easily and reproduced quickly which is both a plus and a minus. Will it replace traditional art? I don't think so. Art is a luxury item. This isn't Ikea, where you can get a duplicate shelf unit for $40 instead of paying a skilled woodworker $1000, although some people still pay the wood worker for their craftsmanship. If someone wants your art they can only get that from you. That's also the benefit of being a person with a personality. Everyone can draw an audience to themselves based on who they are. A machine can't do that, at least not with intelligent people who understand that machines can only mimic personality based on what they are programmed to express. That was a long answer but a great question. What do you think?

    • @kelliebach5240
      @kelliebach5240 Před 2 měsíci

      @@IllustrationsByPete I am honestly a bit concerned that people will use the technology in ways that will be hurtful to others. I have seen they have AI instagram models that have been created using a combination of real women and then are taking actual brand deals and modeling jobs, photos of course, from the real women they’re created from. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m sure you could develop an optimized piece of art that would be more aesthetically pleasing to a wider audience than any single artist could create and then the question is will enough people want to buy art actually created by humans when the unique optimized AI art can be produced cheaper.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I understand what you're saying. If it can be then it will be used the wrong way. That's not me being pessimistic, it's me being practical as it has always happened throughout history. Sometimes it gets bad and is corrected and sometimes it isn't and sometimes it's just different. For example, when I make a thumbnail for my video I don't hire a photographer to take a picture for me, which is what used to be the norm. I also don't hire a graphic designer. I didn't hire a programmer to set up my website. Most art is mass produced anyway, but I still stand by one thing, build your audience. When I buy art, I don't buy it because it's cheap. I buy it because it supports someone I have built a connection with. That's why people buy my art. There is a ton of cheap art in the big box stores but people still buy art from me or support me on Patreon without getting a thing. Build your audience and nurture those connections and you won't need to worry about what other cheap art is mass produced out there.

    I do love to show my art, but I have never charged. The people that have my art, are family members and friends that have ask for specific pieces. They offer to purchase, but I can’t charge those people. 🤷‍♀️ Not sure why. I do feel inadequate, if I’m honest. I never minded taking money when I was singing and playing for people. But for some reason, I can’t with my art. Honestly, I do love my own work…is that bad???? I have no clue what kind of artist I am. HELP ME!!! LOL😮 Maybe I’m not as confident in my art as I was in my music.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před 2 měsíci +1

      There is nothing wrong with giving your art away if it makes you feel good. You can ask for money if you want to. Start low and slowly increase your price if you want to. The easiest way to start is to say thank you. Someone wants to buy your art, say "thank you". Let them feel good for helping you feel good. When people are offering it is because they want to support you. It helps them feel good when they get to support you. Let them. You support me, right? Do you feel good when you do? I'm sure you do. And I get to appreciate you for how kind you are. Do that for someone else and accept their support. Don't let the cycle end with you, become a part of the cycle. You already support others, now accept some support yourself. Now that I say that out loud, art is very much like a cult. Join us. 😂

    scandalous! not all of us with patches and pins had those motivations... okay this is my less cynical take (don't get me wrong- I am also cynical at times). The lack of attraction to "try hards" is a fundamental distaste with inauthenticity with oneself and distain for rampant greed. We knew long before the internet version of capitalism that we were being manipulated and used as nothing more than numbers and consumers. We were sad that life had come to this- humans don't matter anymore. I was conscious of this with music and some other things and now I am numb to it being everywhere. I do reject being lied to and used but also accept there is no escape. So I choose to support artists and musicians that (never 100% of course) feel honest, not super greedy, and don't come off as self-absorbed and as just unethical people. If your youtube channel is 90% you with makeup on and your million dollar home and you use psychologically proven clickbait... I'm not supporting that! Do I have to pull out science to show that certain tactics are done to do specific things that manipulate people? No you get it... otherwise you wouldn't make all those jokes about what other youtubers do.

      I'm glad I don't come off that way. I always try to be the most honest and transparent that I can be, but I'm also not ignorant to the fact that what might not be a big thing to me might be big to someone else. I'm sure I mess up sometimes but it's never malicious and I really believe what I'm saying. I appreciate you. 🙂
