Removing the feathers is historically accurate
Thank you for sharing this video, it was quit informative and simple. Going to try and make in a couple of days.
this guy has a lot of charisma 😍 when he broke it off at the end, it made me chuckle
Thanks. That was more useful that other internet instructions. My daughters will follow this using Canada Geese feathers. However we will not remove the barbs, as the reason to use a quill pen IS to have the barbs bothering your face and everything else.
I thought I was the only one that uses Canada Geese feather to make quill pens!
He forgot to mention you need to heat up the feather shaft with hot sand to harden it.
@@serenitymindspace they're cheap, readily available, and relatively tough. Historically, geese of various types and turkey feathers are the most popular source for quills.
Use a small crochet needle to pull out the insides..works wonderful 😀
i love the instructor, lmao
i prefer the hollywoodiesque type of a feather quill, and i'm not worry for my nose and right eye
:)
going to attempt this on a very small but beautiful feather found in the PNW (not sure what kind of bird but its yellow and green). guessing this will be more difficult due to the size!
This is great!
Excellent tutorial, but you did not mention the hardening of the quill, surely an essential part of manufacture. Chris B.
Wonderful job & very useful
Thanks....share and subscribe my channel..
How about using small scissors🤔
SO --does the nib suck up the ink in a capillary method ? Why not show the result (writing )--do u dip it every 5 seconds ? or not ?
Would have liked to see you write with this pen. I just got a bunch of plastic feathers in the mail and they are junk to make quills with it seems. to hard to cut, whoops >.
go for walks and keep an eye out :)
how long pen last?
Can i ask if blade is effective or i should use that
This is a demonstration I gave to students at Cooper Union, I am not sure why it is on your subscription channel, Ewan Clayton
Thank you, who is the instructor please ? How do you fill the nib is it just dipping?
Instructor: Ewan Clayton..and yes just dip the nib and use it. Thanks for watching
But... But the natural flaky feathery feather hair that gets into your face IS the whole reason anyone would want an actual feather quill! I aint braking off my expensive emu feather in half and cutting it bold, its a memory souvenir!
How can I prepare a quill for the same rigidness so it can make the clipping sound?
Try tempering or dutching the feather. Starts explaining at 6:12

@@ASentientPlant thank you very much, I will definitely watch it now. Thank you.
You shud use a contrasting background for that white quill --we cant see what you are cutting!
Greetings, i've always called the "guts of the thing" the "marrow" of the shaft. No idea if it is correct but that is what I use.
And another thing, strip the fletching/barbs/vanes and give them to an archer friend. Some terms: FEATHER TERMS AND ILLUSTRATIONS . www.fws.gov/lab/featheratlas/glossary.php. And more information: medievalwriting.50megs.com/tools/quill.htm . pax
The fact that part of the feather is called "emargination" has made my day. All i can think of is Spongbob lol. Thanks for the info!
but does it write?
He has this English look
Dude you butchered that thing lol.
Leave the last bit on the top, looks nice. I wound up sanding the “squared” edges after removing the barbs and very lightly oiled when done. Looks great!
What’s the point in making a quill if you’re gonna cut the feather off? 😂
steppenwolf ow I thought they lasted longer, thank you for sharing this information with us
To write with, of course! It’s not a film prop for posers.
make it easier. just stick a fountain pen nib on the feather
The narrator has a fine command of the English language, whilst carving a feather quill pen, but this certainly isn't the best demonstration I've seen. So having produced this historical writing tool, you then butcher away all the feathers to avoid tickling to the face. Why don't you just use a Bic pen instead? You didn't even write any calligraphy.
LOL Removing the feathers IS historically accurate.
Why don't you comment something encouraging somewhere else instead of being an ass?
They laugh a lot what’s so funny about cutting a quill?
