What a fantastic rarity! Never seen this before. Very young and totally spellbinding Mario here. Never tired of watching him. One of the very few who realised opera is about acting, too. Just singing, however well, is not enough. Then again, acting without fine singing makes no sense in opera. This is what we have had in the last decades, alas.

IMO, he was a young lyric tenor with much promise. I believe Kaufman is a sincere artist but hampered throughout his career with a peculiar center register that never really left him completely. Giacomini is 79 years old and no longer sings. Valenti is a light lyric that's pleasant enough but I'm Not that familiar with him. I've seen Fabiano in the house a few times. He never truly improved over that last 10 years. Gregory Kunde is 66 years old today. You sent me something from 1987. You did say singing today. Del Monaco was a dramatic tenor, Giacomini is 79 today and no longer sings.The other tenor's are basically lyrics. I personally think there isn't much talent in the tenor world today other than some light lyric tenors like Camarena and Florez. From the great era of tenors!! I think Mr. DelMonaco is underated. This is the best che gelida manina I have ever heard!!!!! No offense to DeStefano, Bjerling, Bergonzi,etc. Mario is my favorite.
…what a vocal actor! Those continued comments about his so called inability for mezza voce and use of the entire dynamic range from piano to fortissimo are pure lack of knowledge or denialism. And if people want to continue to believe it, no fact will ever prove the opposite. Regarding this vocal miracle from the beginning of his career til his last public appearance in concert is quite naturally a continuous process of change. I would thank God on my knees if I had the voice of MDM in his last concert!! He had no successor and only a few predecessors. His Rodolfo and his Otello were outstanding pieces of mastership, as there there were numerous other examples. It is all a matter whether someone is capable of changing views. MDM is out of reach anyway as he sings far upstairs with Björling & friends …!
@XDranzer000 Very rarely have I heard him sing sotto voce with a nice balanced vibrato. I just don't think he had it. He seems to be a 1 volume tenor. I found the voice exciting but not beautiful.

I'm not really sure what to take from that admission. I thought I had a really witty finishing line, here. But I don't: I think it's really sad that a guy with an enormous talent didn't seem to know how to use it. And the advice from his nearest and dearest was not as helpful as it might have been.

He had an unusual technique which involved conscious control over the position of the larynx. It's not how most great singers sang and probably would be impossible for most people to learn
