Holy shit this Casablanca chess is fucking AMAZING. Like, we can now see how modern players would play against each other from positions of past world championship matches and see how the strategies have developed over the years. This is also like skipping directly to before the climax is supposed to be.
Casablanca chess on computers would even be more interesting and awesome, imagine the plays that the computers can do in certain positions in that particular game, it will either be a bloody battle or just a simple draw but we know that is never the case most of the time and computers will always find a way to win in the most insane ways possible
@@user-ci9uh5mt7nThat's how chess engines are ranked when the play against each other, they play a bunch of games against each other in various openings. The openings are predetermined.
@@SharatSBut it's only openings - not random positions like with Casablanca
It's another way to fix problem that Fischer random was made to deal with. None of this memorizing book openings, computer lines, etc. just straight into where the game has the most play

I love it for several reasons. 1. They are all professional players and still they come up with different ideas in the same position. 2. I just love the concept of putting top players in sharp positions that the computer claims to be even just to show how easy it is to go wrong even if you're one of the best in the world.
Gotham, I am kind of new to the world of chess. Even though I have been watching you for years, I never really started playing until my precious wife gave me your book for Christmas. I finally started reading it and studying this beautiful game, and I want to say thanks. I am not young enough to have goals in PC games like Dota that I played before; I know I will suck soon-you can't stop aging. But chess is different. I can see myself in 50 years playing with my grandchildren. That's just magnificent. And when the day comes, I will be telling them about GM Levy, the reason why I started to play. Good luck on your journey!
unless i die in the apocalypse 30 years from now... shieeet
Chess is a truly beautiful game, and Levy is a wonderful ambassador for it.
Can just someone realise how wholesome that was way to go buddy cheers🎉
An absolutely beautiful post. Best wishes to both you and Levy!

I think this new format is absolutely amazing. When computers play each other now this is what happens. Extending this to the top players is great because it becomes more about who’s the better player not who memorized the most lines. It could be really cool if they let the community vote on different positions to make the game more engaging to an audience
They let the Chat decide which position the players should start with in a poll at one point in another game they had the players vote amongst themselves
The community vote could either end up being really interesting or completely unbalanced, lmao
@@pietrocatalano4285I think they gave chat a limited number of choices that were all fairly even but with imbalances
Well, computers play paired games. Each takes a turn playing white and playing black. They don't start from equal positions most of the time.
24:44 Magnus didn't rush anything, according to the tournament situation a draw was simply enough for him so he decided to go for an easy draw instead of pushing for the win.
He said in the interview that he actually saw that Bf1 line where you sac the a2 pawn and rely on the attack, but he didn't want to go for it since there is always a risk of messing up.

Nice and interesting format. I love your enthusiasm reporting and explaining these games.
To make this format more full proof, The organisers should use engine games instead of famous historical games
@xfKYZacTri sure it's a good idea.
Just lower the depth and make sure each side has a similar amount of playability
You could even pick 3 positions per game and players bid on positions something to agree on a position.
show them 3 positions, each one rank them, both 3 places are removed, if only one is left, that one get played. else if both find the same the best, thats played. if not, random dice roll?@@visibletoallusersonyoutube5928
Such a great idea, would love to see more of this!
I love that you included the historical game first and then went through the new games. This video was exceptional.
This is like playing from a puzzle till the end.
bassem crazy for that queen move fr
This has been the most entertaining chess video. This Casablanca format is really nice
I really love this format, it highlights how different players approach the same position and thats so fun to watch
See, I think the issue with Casablanca chess is yes, it will always be an equal position but that doesn’t mean it’s a humanly equal position. Some moves will just come naturally to one side than the other, so there’s going to be a big RNG element wether u get a easy to play position or hard to play position. But that actually makes it a lot more fun, still less deterministic though.
The games were chosen by garry kasparov and other GMs, im pretty sure they know how to evaluate a position on a human level too.
I loved this format honestly
Predictions for the next title he is going to put:
- Magnus and Hikaru play chess 2.0
- New format chess: NO PREP!
- Crazy new format played by Magnus and Hikaru

This is the internet now. Just chanting the things we've seen a hundred times. It will be this until we come up with a codified abbreviation of these chants. And then we will chant the abbreviation until we fade into dust.
i love the new format, and also love (as always) your analysis of it. As mentioned, the weakness of the new format comes if one person knows the analysis of the historical position while the other does not. Could this be avoided by having the engine randomly generate a mathematically equal position? Also though the hidden beauty of this format is that it will encourage deeper studying of historical matches rather than memorizing opening lines down to the nth level. That's a good thing.
Fun fact: The name of the tactic “x-ray attack” could not have even existed during the Chigoran vs Steinitz game because it was in 1889 and x-rays were discovered in November of 1895.
I love the concept of this format. Can you share how the positions were chosen and how/when they were revealed to the players?
2 from commentators
2 from viewers
2 from players
Fide gives 3 random options, they choose 1
Total 6 games
Players know the game only 2 minutes before match start
Levy never fail to be milked by hikagus carmoral
sus hikagus
They could make a tournament out of this by making some sort of team chess format - 2 players and one gets each side of the position to play
I love this format, it’s very similar to an idea I had which is where you start about 15 moves into a random variation of an opening.
TCEC (the top computer chess competition) already does this although it's not always 15 moves and the positions are chosen to be slightly imbalanced, and the computers play both sides of the same opening against each other in a pair of games. the reason the openings are chosen to be slightly imbalanced is to raise the chances that the result of the two games isn't tied, i.e. one of the computers wins one game and draws the other
@@psymar yeah that's where I got the idea from. I forgot to mention that they would play both sides to make it balanced as well.
Damn, they really do still be inventing new chess formats.
GOTHAM sacrifices the stare in the intro
Having a chess format that is a puzzle 1v1 is quite interesting and does spice it up the quite a bit.
World championships used to frequently take place in two cities -- and more. Before WW2 you had as many as 12 cities, but even two of the Karpov Kasparov matches were split, 1986 between Moscow and London and 1990 between NYC and Lyon. It's only since the title split (and later reunification) that all WC matches have been in a single city, although some of the FIDE WC tournaments during the split era were in multiple cities.

I have a game show type idea for you:
You get random positions, and you guess who has a better one and for how much.
That would make us better at chess, + it would be very entertaining

BRO I WATCH UR SFA VIDS NO WAY U COMMENT ON GOTHAM UR GOATED BRO I AM A BIG FAN OOOOOOO ❤
Damn, from the preview i thought they would play a game backwards, from near-draw position to the starting one :D
Maybe a way to balance it would be to find equal positions that haven't been reached before
0:40 this is where gotham mentions magnus carlsen.
Dang bro 8 minutes and over a hundred comments? Levy's the goat
I really like this new format because it’s short and modern. Some food for thought would be to literally highlight the key ideas once for each position to get less experienced players on board with what’s happening in a blink of and eye
It's an interesting format to add to the mix. I think I might prefer Fisher Random but it might be cool if Casablanca was a tiebreak or something.
Chess update(1.46)
Bro took 43 seconds to milk Magnus
bro this is actually fun af like its so exiting what format we can do with this one...like maybe we can make the players choose thier color like armagedon or like themes for the games like seasons stuff...make the game more enjoyable

We used to practice like this in chess club 10 years ago. Using chessmaster 11 game database. Choose a masters game one. Move 8-11 and each person plays it from both perspectives. Always had great fun and learned alot

They have tournaments like this on lichess, it’s fun and makes you learn new position you normally wouldn’t play
They didn't live til 35. The high childhood mortality rate was what brings the average down. People who survived childhood regularly lived into their 60s and beyond
Weird hour for the update no ? I mean, as a french guy, I love it. But weird
Please cover if they do more of this format. Big fan of the history coupled with seeing how modern players handle those positions.
“where we dropping?” “Byrne v. Fischer, 1956”
One of my favorite chess variants I picked up from a novel by Piers Anthony about a guy who was playing this particular variant with a demon it's called pole chess
you have an extra piece on the side of the board called the pole
Play sing the pole on the board is a move from there the pole can move from any unoccupied square to any other on occupied square it may never occupy an occupied square which means it cannot capture however it cannot be captured
It can get really complicated really quick when an opponent can move their poll between your queen and your Bishop for example knights become far more important as a result
It's very unfair if you just come to the board and get a random position. As you can see sometimes one color just clearly calls the shots although its equal, or one color is humanly way easier to play. Players should "bid" on certain positions they play, and the winner decides the color they play. For example: Carlsen plays 3 matches against Hikaru. They both have 100 points to bid on all games combined.
Then imagine they bid like the following: Carlsen Hikaru
Game 1 12 13
Game 2 74 11
Game 3 14 76
Therefore, Carlsen picks his color in game 2 and Hikaru in games 1 and 3.
These games where a player lets a queen or other piece into their back ranks because they know they can trap it are absolutely fascinating to me.
This is definitely a fascinating concept, though I think if it wants to be a more accepted "alternate chess format" like chess960, it probably needs positions from something other than historical games just because "happens to have analyzed this position before" is too much of an advantage that someone might just have "at random."
One thing that could be interesting would be to play equal positions from computer-vs-computer games. There's a massive set of interesting, extremely high level games that can't possibly have all been analyzed in depth-and you could just create more if you need to-which you can use to set up the games.
This format is definitely gonna be interesting I would love to try it ^.^
I liked the contrast between the games, maybe you could toggle a a split screen with two smaller boards each for one game? That would help me see the structures a lot better :) thanks for the analysis and good time :)
This is a top format in a tournament tbh
