Reed was a stubborn asshole for insisting they take an unknown, untrusted wagon route, but he was justifiably defending his wife. It wasn't murder. It was clearly self-defense.
It also makes me so angry that their foolish decisions cost the lives of so many innocent animals. They had so many warnings and red flags about avoiding the short cut but they foolishly continued. Those animals had no choice. They were completely dependent on their owners to care for them, and the people just treated them as expendable. I feel so bad for the animals :(
They did not put in enough effort in making this made-for-TV movie. While there are some well-made scenes that make parts of their journey come alive (like trying to get through Weber Canyon), they couldn't do any of the salt flats? Seems to me that they skip all the way from the Wasatch Range (where they were in mid-August) to Nevada (where Snyder was murdered, like in early-October) in just a couple of minutes here.
His leg was messed up. He wasn't going to heal on that mountain. Plus, there wasn't time to let him heal, even if he could. I hate that they had to shoot him, too, but he was suffering and it was the only thing they could do for him. 😞
In the book I read it says that they abandoned him. They were hoping that the Indians would find him and care for him, because it was his only chance of survival.
And Reed didn't murder that man. He killed him in self-defense. My boyfriend would do the same thing if a man was hitting me with a whip!

I think the most obvious warning they ignored was when his Lt friend at Ft Bridger explicitly said "Don't do it."

He was a hard ass. What a jerk. Those things were sentimental. You just can't replace some things. Leave them behind but have some respect.
"Lightning the load" doesn't have to mean actually BREAKING things.
Why not? They’re going to lay in the wilderness anyway lol
The Donner/Reed party built the road that a year later the Mormons used to establish Salt Lake City. yonk!
I can't believe they shot the horse they could have let him rest

890gg90 Like there were any Indians right there to do that with.
It wasn't necessary, of course, but I think he was just so angry. Understandably, of course.
Thought Virginia Reed gave her pony to some Indians.

Actually , that does sound more accurate. It's some time since I read "Ordeal by Hunger". Thanks.
