If this is accurate I feel so sorry for his wife and children and some other women who had to do what men decided. The men, especially especially James Reed, got what they deserved for their arrogance, lack of prudence and good sense.
How can she say, “We’re freezin’ to death!”, while traversing straight up a mountain? You only freeze when you stop moving. Still, a great visual of this historic event. ‘Merica!
ok, I understand the appeal of going out west if you are poor and starving.... but The reed's were not poor people. They lived in relative comfort for their time. James Reed just got greedy. He should have just stayed back east. If it's going good , don't rock the boat. Reed was a blasted fool!!
Carla Thompson Actually, James Reed lost everything just before deciding to go West. He had land that he built a railroad on, but it turned out to be a bad investment. The railroad ties were not maintain as often as should have and caused many accidents. Reed signed papers for bankruptcy and all of his properties and home were taken. He had hoped to start over in CA.
Reed was a stubborn asshole for insisting they take an unknown, untrusted wagon route, but he was justifiably defending his wife. It wasn't murder. It was clearly self-defense.
A few historical inaccuracies (the wagons were not pulled by horses and even the Reeds wore less fancy and more appreciate clothing), but still very interesting and fun to watch. I am glad I watched the documentary first, though.
tried my best to watch it, but the acting is so bad, its painfull to watch, British B-movies are watchable, BUT American B-movies are just bloody awful
His leg was messed up. He wasn't going to heal on that mountain. Plus, there wasn't time to let him heal, even if he could. I hate that they had to shoot him, too, but he was suffering and it was the only thing they could do for him. 😞
Nothing even comes close to telling this story like the PBS documentary by Ric Burns. But I imagine what HBO could do with this story in a miniseries. Hopefully someday someone will.
Actually there was a war, Mexico lost. Read a history book. If you still have a problem with it, then I suggest, you just get over it already, it had nothing to do with you or I, neither one of us existed in that time period. But nothing was stolen.
02Nawal. So that's your answer? That's not much of a plan. But then again it does match your mentality. And you really need to stop projecting your inadequacies on to others.
The Mexicans seceded the US Western Territories in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after Mexico City fell. In other words, after the US captured their capital city and pretty much everything north of it. They could have kept more than half of the country at that point in time.
5:27 Molly Parker (from Deadwood)
This picture show begins with the family making the devil's music so it's no surprise they ended up as they did.
Thank you for sharing this💚
The Delta Flyers brought me here.
I love it...the big custom wagen...the arrogance...the shortcut.... Sounds like it may not end well

The journey was more than worth it for some of those lucky pioneers. Their descendants are set for life and won’t ever want for money.
Dont take no cutoffs
Damn you, Hastings...😣
Meredith Baxter Lol
When they gonna start eating each other?

It was a trapper cabin they found up there.

The Donner/Reed party built the road that a year later the Mormons used to establish Salt Lake City. yonk!

THanks for uploading this. I have a strange fascination about how people lived throughout the history of man.. this satisfies some imagination.
Lol this movie is terrible
He was a hard ass. What a jerk. Those things were sentimental. You just can't replace some things. Leave them behind but have some respect.
the Irish people on this trail were the worst. no wonder people hated them so much. and the natives were treated so unfairly .
thus snowshoes were born
"i mean it margret you'll need me, you will." -- and she was the first to be eaten

I know everyone is in a really bad situation, but seriously? The Graves parents were such mean people. I feel so bad for the Reeds.
And Reed didn't murder that man. He killed him in self-defense. My boyfriend would do the same thing if a man was hitting me with a whip!
Reed was a stubborn asshole for insisting they take an unknown, untrusted wagon route, but he was justifiably defending his wife. It wasn't murder. It was clearly self-defense.
"Lightning the load" doesn't have to mean actually BREAKING things.
Why not? They’re going to lay in the wilderness anyway lol
And that palace wagon is just ridiculous. Lol.

True, but finding enough oxen teams in 1994 to make this might have been difficult.

I can't believe they shot the horse they could have let him rest

They should have made this film about the Donner party, would have been far better.
And white people complain about immigrants now when they themselves wAs immigrants. California belonged to Mexico and was stolen from Mexico.

+02Nawal Ok, I see you have a problem with it. What are you going to do? Let's hear it.
02Nawal. So that's your answer? That's not much of a plan. But then again it does match your mentality. And you really need to stop projecting your inadequacies on to others.
Stupid fools
These people where so naive and stupid. Shortcut my ass. They should have stuck to the Oregon trail.
Yes that's right California was Mexican land and you white people stole California from Mexico. You white people are the real immigrants.
+02Nawal you're a special person
+02Nawal Stole? Mexico LOST that war.
The Mexicans seceded the US Western Territories in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after Mexico City fell. In other words, after the US captured their capital city and pretty much everything north of it. They could have kept more than half of the country at that point in time.
oh ya the queen bee LOL...
i was 8..i dont know what possessed me to watch this at that age...
i cant believe he didnt try to save her....he had enough time to run and grab her.
Well done movie though one historic mistake from the beginning. During the great migration almost all wagons were pulled by oxen not horses.
True, but finding enough oxen teams in 1994 to make this might have been difficult.
Mules too.
Oxen could only travel approximately 2 miles per hour maximum. Horses and mules have a much faster gait.
@@rodneyjohnson7327 oxen were a sure bet, and in the early days when trails were less established oxen had pulling power that was way more important
Would anyone care to guess what happened to Harry and Velma when they were surrounded by the giant ants at the shack?
