Plants have changed my life - I love tending to them and sharing the joys and discoveries of my planty journey online. I would just put some old socks around the glass jars. You can check the roots once in a while but it keeps it dark enough to stop algae from growing!

Next time when you’re pulling a rooted cutting out of perlite I recommend filling it with water! The water will loosen the perlite and the roots with come right out much easier!!

I have some of my plants in pon. I've learned a lot in the last 2 years. I've found panting my clear plastic pots completely stopped the algae problem. Ive also painted several with baking soda added to the paint, it gives a nice mat sheen. Algae is bad because it eats the nutrients the plant needs and chokes out the circulation of air, which is one of the reasons pon such a good plant mix. One trick i learned was to leave a thin unpainted strip up the side so I'm able to see the water level. As my plants got bigger it was harder to find clear pots and i was forced to use cache pots on all of my plants in pon. Also as they got bigger (I'm talking 8" pots and bigger) the minerals and salt in our water would cause the pon to look white-ish and the plants did not do as well. I learned I had to start flushing the pon once a month with filtered water to clear out the salts and minerals, once I started flushing my large plants are thriving again.
Cut the opening of a balloon off and stretch it over the bottom of the mason jar as cover for light. That way you can still remove it to check the roots.

I just love Pon, I'm slowly moving all my plants into it. No failures so far (can't say the same for leca). Currently experimenting with propagating straight into Pon, looking good so far. The one that's been in Pon the longest is a philodendron and a hoya that have both been in Pon since June 2020, both are super happy and grow really well. I'm using the Lechuza Pon, in Europe it's not hard to get hold of, but homemade should be just the same. I give my glass jars a decorative sleeve to protect from light and reduce algae growth, lets me still see the roots inside the jar by just removing the sleeve
Where do you get your sleeves from?
Regarding the water getting used up quickly... I experienced that in the beginning but as the plants grew thick new roots adapted to the pon I found they were less and less thirsty. I guess the thicker roots are able to store more water now. Before I watered every 5-7 days and now I water every 10ish days, even in the scorching summer (including thirsty plants like the verrucosum etc.), so long-term it improved dramatically.

My aunt did macramé over a couple jars for me that I love! You could try that for your glass vessels and then you can still pull it up to check the roots!😊

Your plants are doing so well in pon. If I were you, I would leave a band of clear glass when painting the pots (maybe by putting a bit of painting tape too leave a small area unpainted) too be able to see the water level easyly.

Been just testing out pon i like your videos, and wanted to try making my own. What i do on my glass/plastic container i do a piece or regular clear tape from too to bottom, then i spray paint it how i want the outside to block the light, after is nice and painted i pull the tape off. I do this so i can see the water level snd some roots to see how plant is doing.
I have a Geoppertia Warscewiczii too and I think this video was the push I need to want to pot it into pon when I repot!!!! 😍💚 Thanks for the planty update!!

I painted some vessels with baking soda and acrylic. They look great but don't like to get wet. I painted a couple only 3/4 of the way up the glass and they are working well.
I'm over fungus gnats and have been moving all my plants to coarse pumice ❤ Our aloes love it too!
DD16 used baking/soda and acrylic paint mix and it looks good. On glass vessels you could leave a strip of glass clear to check the water level.

I only just started with leca and I’m late to the game. Now I gotta catch up and decide how I like leca so I can try pon 🤣
I'm crazy about pon and have almost all my 100+ plants in it and recommend it to people constantly... the only thing I'd mention is I have most of mine in orchid pots with holes in the bottom. Babies and cuttings get more water or are in closed containers like jars (like yours), but all the rest get better air circulation with the drainage holes (and the pon doesn't really fall out since I have saucers under them). I had been leaving water in the saucers thinking it was no big deal but I ended up getting root rot from two plants last week, so as your plants get bigger, it might be a good idea to not have water sitting in the bottom of the vessels. The pon holds a lot of water already anyway. Calatheas, begonias, and a couple others are in self-watering, though, since they don't like to dry out at all.

You should try putting some cool stickers around one of the jars, I don't know if that would block out enough light though. And you could peel a sticker back to check on the water or the roots. I don't know, just an idea.

Remember when I updated you on my Verrucosum? Welllll, I had to throw out all 4 mature plants due to Mosaic Virus, because all of them were propagated from the same plant. 🙈 My heart hurts every time I see a Verrucosum now and I become a jelly fish. Good luck with yours! 💚
Did you have it tested at a lab? How did you know it was mosaic virus?

i gotta ask.. when starting, you scoop up the pon to put it into the vessel. I usually just use the vessel straight into it. one big scoop.. maybe there is a reason but as I was watching it I couldn't figure out why do it the hard way? post putting the plant in, sure but not before?
Instead of adding slow release fertilizer,can I use liquid instead when watering my plants ?
algae is good for the alocasias. not many other plants tho!

Put the glass jar into a black pot. That way you can take it out to look at root development. Question? My ZZ Ravens has a root sticking through the bottom, but the rest of the pot seems roomy. Do I worry and repot it up?
If the rest of it doesn't seem root bound I would just leave it! I get some roots poking up on my plants too.

Hey! I’m curious about why you create a reservoir for some plants and not for others. Thanks! :)
It just depends on which containers/vessels I have available! I do find it easier to maintain when there is a separate reservoir rather than a closed glass container. It's easier to wash and flush etc. But I have a lot of glass around so I end up using that, too. I recently got some small self watering pots that I'm going to test out.

When/if you transition the plants to soil, can you wash and reuse the perlite? I mean guess you could just mix it back in with potting soil, but could you wash it and reuse it after the algae growth?
You can boil it, let it cool and reuse it. She actually showed that in a previous video.

I have a begonia not doing well. Had to treat for spider mites and now it's sad. I put it into water, but thinking of moving to pon. Should I cut off all the old roots?
I wouldn't. They will die off naturally as it grows new water roots :)
Did you have hoya polyneura growing in different media to compare to?
Yes I have several that I planted into soil around the same time and they all have new growth.
Pon looks like the Bonsai soil I bought for my succulents and cactus. Is it the same?
It's very similar.
How often do you fertilize with Omocote?
I've only applied it once so far, but it needs to be reapplied every 6 months. So I guess I will be doing it twice a year.
Got a bag of lechuza yesterday, have most of my plants in straight perlite with a bit of teracotta granulate, my calatheas hated it so I moved them to jyst water which they seem to like the best, bodies have dropped tho...
Alocasias seemed to love the perlite at first but it seems as though the plant itself hates me lol, no matter the kind, no matter what I do, it wants to get root rot and lose all it's leaves 😬
So I had to strip the roots and put them in water... The ones growing from corms are dramatically unhappy and will always lose their leaves...
I got the pon, leca and even got the expensive lechusa fertilizer lol, my question is, should or should I not mix it with perlite? I researched a bit and the only thing that makes pon and perlite different is the weight and nutriens, put I can't see a downside to adding perlite to my pon? I have't been able to find a single oerson who has done it tho and I wonder why?
I'm also womdering if it's a good idea to make a reservoir in my no drainage pots with some leca at the bottom to see if it needs water easier?
I've since added perlite into mine and it works great! I found the pon was quite dense, so it helped to "fluff" it up a bit. I'd go for it :)

Hydrogen peroxide kills the algae and also prevents root rot. I use that and have no algae in my glass jars that i have used for over a year.
How do you do it as in do you just squeeze it directly over the rocks or do you mix it with water when you water? Etc
@@reethompson8605 I just mix it with water. Usually i use 1-3% mixture and water with that.
So what's the deal with pon? It's just coated in nutrients, is that the advantage over leca?
From my understanding you don't have to worry about the ph, the flushing, and the fertilizer. People use slow release fertilizer.

2 part Pumice,2 part lava rock, & 1 part zeolite.
Is pon something you make or buy? Does anyone here from Australia use it? I don't think I've seen it outside of youtube 😊
Both. You can purchase Lechuza (brand) Pon (product) or mix your own homemade version of the product. Fern has a video about how to do this

Yep! It can be used it any pot really. It doesn't even need to have a reservoir, some people just water it like normal.
