2017/08/08: James Damore and his Google Memo on Diversity (complete)

  • James Damore of Google recently wrote a memo detailing his thoughts about Google's diversity initiatives. Within a month, it went viral, and he was fired, for "perpetuating gender stereotypes." The problem is that everything James claimed is solidly backed by well-developed scientific literatures. Thus, the company in charge of much of the world's communication has now fired an excellent engineer for citing established scientific truths.
In this full 50 min interview, James and I discuss his motivations, and the consequences of his actions. We are joined (audio only) by another Google employee who wishes, for obvious reasons, to remain anonymous.
A fund-raiser for James has been established, here:

Here are a series of references buttressing the claims of James' memo:

    de Bruyn (2012): bit.ly/2uoWkMh
To quote de Bruyn et al: high status predicts more mating opportunities and, thus, increased reproductive success. “This is true for human adults in many cultures, both ‘modern’ as well as ‘primitive’ (Betzig, 1986). In fact, this theory seems to be confirmed for non-human primates (Cheney, 1983; Cowlishaw and Dunbar, 1991; Dewsbury, 1982; Gray, 1985; Maslow, 1936) and other animals from widely differing ecologies (Ellis, 1995) such as squirrels (Farentinos, 1972), cockerels (Kratzer and Craig, 1980), and cockroaches (Breed, Smith, and Gall, 1980).” Status also increases female reproductive success, via a different pathway: “For females, it is generally argued that dominance is not necessarily a path to more copulations, as it is for males. It appears that important benefits bestowed upon dominant women are access to resources and less harassment from rivals (Campbell, 2002). Thus, dominant females tend to have higher offspring survival rates, at least among simians (Pusey, Williams, and Goodall, 1997); thus, dominance among females also appears to be linked to reproductive success.”
    Personality and political belief:
    Gerber (2010): bit.ly/2hOpnHa
    Hirsh (2010): bit.ly/2fsxIzB
    Gerber (2011): bit.ly/2hJ1Kjb
    Xu (2013): bit.ly/2ftDhOq
    Burton (2015): bit.ly/2uoPS87
    Bakker (2016): bit.ly/2vMlQ1N
    Occupations by gender:
    bit.ly/2vTdgPp
Problems with the measurement and concept of unconscious bias:
    Fielder (2006): bit.ly/2vGzhQP
Blanton (2009): bit.ly/2vQuwEP (this one is particularly damning)
    Microaggressions: Strong claims, weak evidence:
    Lilienfeld (2017): bit.ly/2vS28lg
And, just for kicks, two links discussing the massive over-representation of the left in, most particularly, the humanities:
    Klein (2008): bit.ly/2fwdLrS
    Langbert (2016): bit.ly/2cV53Q8

I don't know if Damore is standing up to the bullies like how Peterson is. He's just...standing there.
It's like if the left said and believed that the sky is purple while the right says it's blue, and Damore steps put and sees the sky and says it's blue because of his observation, then the right applauds and the left fires him. Then Damore is hurt and baffled as to why the left, his former employer, fired him over his observations.

I can't even begin to describe how insane and inappropriate it was that they fired him. I read the full document/memo, and there was nothing rude or discriminatory about it. I felt zero offense, nor should I have felt offense- his arguments were truly and honestly factual and obvious (to any one who does have their head up their a**). It's just plain disgusting how he has been treated. He should not be quiet, please keep spreading the word!

    • @blanco7726
      @blanco7726 Před 4 lety +1

The memo was very well written, but I understand how people got offended by it, due to certain arguments being worded a certain way and although I wouldnt assume a person this smart wouldnt already use a more leftist-friendly vocabulary in the first place I think he could have worded a lot of ideas differently to avoid as much backlash (backlash not good if you’re trying to suggest a new idea). Probably still would have got fired realistically, cuz even as slightly offensive as it was, it was definitely not enough to fire someone over, so I dont doubt Google would have felt obliged to terminate him anyways.

    • @mrdigit8391
      @mrdigit8391 Před 7 lety +5

KIDWITDEGUN, I find it interesting how you can align your perspective with one that ignores the intent and opinions being shared, and then form in your mind the idea that people have the need to dominate women.
That has not been stated ONCE, neither in the video nor in the comment you first responded to. Your perspective, combined with your profile name, reminds me of a metaphor Ben Shapiro likes to use when it comes to force. Namely, the use of the gun in the application of force.
I would highly suggest you think on the value of competence in the sense that competence should always trump race, sex and other topics. The only perspective, I think, High on Caffeine also shares is that Competence does not care who or what you are, only what you can do.
If that gets flipped, by adopting the idea that competence would be a tool to dominate minorities or a specific gender creates a society of chaos, not to mention extremely dysfunctional.
Better yet, and to put it simply: Competence is not racist or sexist. Hiring people because they are part of a minority or of a specific gender, is.
*edit: Added space to ease reading this.

Just look at the CEO who responded to all of this; he looks like a goddamn skeleton, and if you just go through Google Image Search pictures of him you'll see him making all kinds of bizarre goofy expressions. He looks like a cult leader/cult member, which is what he is. This is what you find again and again with the people who are part of this modern West Coast tech cult: they are SERIOUSLY fucked up. Like clinically, physically and mentally ill. I think the most important thing Americans can do in the next decade is to rebuild our real-world face-to-face communities, and stop allowing these lunatics to monitor and control every moment of our lives. @JoJaDaRu Před 7 lety +31

Yeah it was clear he was a JBP fan. At one point he wrote something like "the question isn't why aren't there more women in positions of power the question is why are there any men willing to do it at all." and that was a dead give away. He's young and doesn't quite have the nuance that JBP usually shows but the memo was reasonably well written and about as clear as you could expect. Such a shame that people don't understand averages and outliers. Too many people are thinking this is an insult to women as if the only skills you can possibly have as a human are the ones that help you succeed in the corporate world.

I don't know professor, these last decades they are doing pretty well in places where it matters: Academia, media, public discussion and politics. And now corporations. It's very worrying that the biggest search engine has fully embrased this nonsense.

Agreed. The reactions to the medias narrotive are incouraging. But I think this is largely due to the internet. Internet must seem the final frontier to the post modernist. I hope it is to big to control. But total control might not be necesarry. Pushing views underground and away from most people could be enough when they control schools and media.

James Damore is a hero for men, truth, and societal fairness! How wonderful and brave for him to point to fact in the face of the hypocrisy of identity politics gone wild. We need more people to stand for truth, if we will ever get past the bias agains men, which has become so pervasive in politics and society. It's okay that men have certain biological advantages in areas of science and engineering. We should embrace this as a society, and celebrate the positive qualities of masculinity!

It's sad that it takes a 51-minute video to explain the manifesto fairly, but only a headline or 140 character tweet to "destroy" his arguments. It's interesting that the media is now attempting to smear that James is only talking to the "al-right". That might be fair to say about Molyneux who's views I feel are questionable but to label Jordan Peterson as right-wing is ludicrous.

They kept screaming "stereotype" and "Flawed/biased studies"... They weren't actually addressing the words even if you copy-pasted... I just wanted to flood them with research data and be done with it but I gave up once I realized they were insane and it would probably not be worth the energy-investment to gather specific studies to buffer the ones he included that the "anti-diversity" accusers were criticizing.

There is no way in which you should be sorry for creating the framework in which James could so eloquently establish his facts in this matter. Excellent paper, excellent interview. In my field as a government economic policy adviser, I was seen as a threat for my (quote) "honesty, integrity, intellect and analytical rigour." In eleven years with the Queensland government (during which I wrote the economic development policies of governments from both right and left), my analysis was never faulted. But my career was cut short and my health damaged because I would not play the "insider-outsider," feather-our-nest games rather than serve the community benefit. I hope that James fares better.
