  • What to expect on cost when rebuilding your Porsche Blown Motor. This applies to Cayman/Boxster 986/987 as well as 911 996 and 997 M96/M97 ENGINES. going 3.4 to 3.8L. The prices on things are very similar. This goes over the cost of my motor build. I broke it down into 3 tiers of engine rebuild for you to consider.
    STOCK BUILD
    RELIABILITY BUILD
    MY BUILD.
you can subtract and add prices based on how you would like to customize your motor to figure out around how much your build would cost.

Thanks for doing this! This is a growing fear for me, and basically what’s kept me from tracking it

Ah! I’m glad you found this video helpful. Honestly a lot of Boxster / caymans can be reliable. I would just make sure to do the precautionary mods before hand. I made another video about it before that says “this can save your motor”. I would make sure all of those are done before putting thru any heavy track day. I probably made the mistake myself and would track the car heavily and do each of the mods suggested one at a time between each event, which could have led to premature wear ! But don’t let that stop you! get out and drive!

@@phatmanrx7 yes I saw that one too! Sadly she’s drinking oil already, so I think it’s only a matter of time. Just trying to enjoy it while I can and cross this bridge when it inevitably comes. Did you consider a DFI swap at all? I know it’s much more involved and expensive, but everyone says those engines are so much more bulletproof

I did my air cooled engine last year and it was quite costly even though I did it myself. Probably in the $25K parts range with all the top tier upgrades and "while you're in there" stuff. I think it's wise to get the best parts in there and don't skimp when it comes to longevity and reliability.

Not a bad price, there are stateside engine builders out there robbing the m96/m97 community. The 991.1 gt3 engine is kinda cheap compared to the 997 gt3 engine. Hope to see someone step up with a swap soon 👌🏾

Not too bad! That would be an insane swap

Nien lives parts in Southern California are total scum bags stay away from any of their rebuilds

it sounds like a lot and its bad luck when it happens. No one wants this to happen, but when you rebuild the motor and spend 12-15k, you have a beautiful Porsche to drive for many years and you know what you have.

Quick question as information regards to 13:1 pistons, where can I find more about them?

Hello! You can contact Tito at Arkwerk. He can set you up with getting them ordered if you were interested

This is what keep me cautious about buying a Carrera s or a Cayman s for 25k....I mean m3 motors go for half of the that. As a car that occasionally goes to the track and fun on the weekends, this platform is expensive. I guess you gotta pay to play 😅

    • @phatmanrx7
      @phatmanrx7  Před 4 měsíci

You are def correct. It’s funny my friend Ashton with the e90 m3 blew his motor the same track day as mine. And you’re right, the motor was half the price. However my motor has so many more upgrades that probably attributed to that doubling the build price! He just did a stock build with race bearings

@@phatmanrx7 That's a funny thing about the boxer engine. You can rebuild it and have it the same way and spend all that money to have it potentially blow up again or it's been extra money to prevent it from blowing up. Either way your still paying a lot. There's no cheap way of doing it. An m3 engine is solid as it is and doesn't need much to upgrade it unless your going the force induction route. I really do like Porsches but the platform is very expensive.

So to clarify the used motor route, the total cost to buy a used motor and labor to install would be anywhere from like 6-10 grand?

I had a company called nine lives parts from eBay in Southern California. Motor failed in one year 1700 miles has bad piston slap. I told them 6 days past warranty. They would not honor warranty. No track just normal driving on street . Complete thieves buyer beware!
