The Hen House - Making sure it's safe and secure for the New Chickens || Plot 37 (Episode 71)

- This week of vlooging has been almost entirely taken up with the final fixing up of the hen house. Having a DIY, home-made chicken house means endless adjustments but this is the first time we have been able to really do any major works since we first built it. The priority has been making sure the whole chicken cage is safe and secure for the new hens!
We put on a new roof - an extra thick tarpaulin to keep the birds sheltered from the weather. I have fixed the bottom half of the door by sandwiching the old wood between two new parts - Battons and Featherboard. And installed new hinges, bolts at the top and bottom on the door and flashing at the back so it can't push through.
I have also used the feather board to go around the base of the hen house in order to help with strength and so we can raise the internal floor hight a little with out the chickens kicking it all out the sides.
We also make a visit to The Curve Garden in Hackney for a drink. The Curve Garden is a lovely outdoor bar in a garden/veg patch where they grow lots of edible plants and its just a lovely space to sit around and have a drink with friends.

The hen house has a roof, a lock and a garden. With the way the housing market is, if you install a tap you could probably rent it out for £700 per week.

We've just gone into lockdown in nz. Last night people were buying toilet rolls and food. I meanwhile loaded up the trolley with flowers and herbs and veges. Not quite spring yet but taking full advantage of the days off! Live your chicken coop. I'm always trying to find ways to enrich our coop and area for our big girls. Our bantams freerangfe in our garden .
Great video again Jess. We have named one of our chickens after you. Jessie is a lovely mahogany brown and black Rhode Island Red. We are using a tarp over ours and tensioning it with bungees. The Curve Garden looks beautiful. Just sent a link about it to my kids who both lives in London.
We had tarp on our chicken house at first but it was so dark and noisy so we ended up putting corrugated plastic panels on..also captures the rain in the water butt we put at the end with some old guttering we had.
Awe I love that garden/bar and the potting shed made of stained glass is gorgeous. Wouldn’t last here in virginia when we get a hail storm but it’s stunning! Great job on the new chicken shack! Love the pink roof!

Hey Jessie; you do know that with a small flat head screw driver, you can back out a cable tie and reuse it right. Looks good! Nice job. By the way: you should call it the "Hens nest", rather than hen house. Looks better in writing :)

Loving the hen house with the pink roof! I actually think you look better without the black eyeliner, you have a fair complexion which I think you should embrace. Hello love, that was a splendid job you did to upgrade the door. Earlier on some of your videos I was you use a product. I finally figured out what it is and how to get one. I found them and ordered 2 of them they both came yesterday. I found a deep rootrainer , Pipa Greenwood so yes I was excited and ordered two right away I cant wait to use them next year.

You should put up an electric fence around it. I had to for my girls at my allotment and put it on a timer so it’s not on when I got up. Car battery and solar panel powers it and it’s all cheap on Amazon 😀
I’ve been watching your videos for a little while now and have been thoroughly enjoying them, I always give a thumbs up. I have now started to work through your earlier videos and again I’m really enjoying them. I like the videos incorporating the chickens and the chicken house and Lil the lovely pussy cat. About those hosters not getting eaten by slugs and snails. My hosters always got blitzed by them terribly. I gave up on them last summer (NZ) and didn't give them any water at all. Well not one snail or slug bite. Interesting eh. Don't water ya hosta. Just the rain. Cheers great video 😎👍

Wow Jessie so much to enjoy, new repairs to the hen house looks fab, the Curved Garden Venue amazing. You look beautiful without makeup and I love seeing you doing all the DIY with such ease. I have always looked forward to your Tuesday posts right from the start and anything extra has always been a bonus. If you are going to go down the Patrion path maybe it would be a good idea to put your kitchen/cooking episodes there. I would pay to see you in the kitchen with a glass of wine. You are so entertaining you wouldn't even need to produce a meal at the end of it !

Fabulous chicken house Jessie, cant wait to see the new girlie whirlies! Once you have chickens its too hard to be without them. We have to badger proof our barns and also have a weasel/stoat problem. Have had some horrific discoveries. On a good note, we have hatched some peacock chicks today, so cute, and the bad news is the cabbage whites got under the netting and I have lace curtains. The chickens will enjoy the cabbage leaves because tomorrow they're all coming up. C'est la vie! Cant wait for the next vlog.

Cable ties will do the job if it fails x
A lot of cable ties can actually be reused even though they're single use . You can lift the tab with your nail and slide it open. Not all but a lot of them.
Buy the reusable cable ties I use them for tying up blackberries.

I wish someone would explain how patron works from our side of it. Can we do it from the other side of the world? I find a lot of the channels aren’t as good any more it’s like they are cut short now. So guess they give more to those that are paying more???
I didn’t mind the isolation but I think I really would have were I your age.
With chickens can you just lock them in the cage at night or do they need locking in the actual house? I really want some but when I'm working I can only get down for 1-3 hours a day to let them run around the plot, so can they just be in the cage and allowed to go in their house whenever they want when I'm not there? Also, would chickens be happy with that setup? 1-3 hours a day free range and the rest in their cage and then two days a week having all day free range? It's hard to find out online because what some people find acceptable is just cruel when it comes to chickens, and I'd only keep chickens if they would be happy with what I can provide. I'd be having a cage the size of yours if I did it. I've never had chickens so I don't know what they would be happy with for a good quality of life.
