Potato Harvest, a new raised Carrot Bed and the Girls are settling in fine! || Plot 37 (Episode 73)

- Having the new bantam hens on the allotment feels so good! And its really made me feel like spending huge amounts of time on the plot like i used to so we got a couple fo really full days in the vegetable garden this week.
Very excitingly i've put a blackboard up in the shed to help get organised because Autumn is a seriously busy time on Plot 37 and we have loads to do! I also function better with a list... really helps with getting things done in a timely fashion rather than procrastinating for weeks and then its too late. So now we have a blackboard!
Another big job i've got done this week is filling the new carrot bed! I transplanted the turf in that area and moved it to where the incinerator was before so we don't have a bald patch.
Lined with this type of weed proof membrane: amzn.to/3jwdfsr
And we have filled the new bed with sieved spent compost from the potatoes that we grew in bags this year. The potato harvest was better than expected and i think we will grow them in bags again next year but i will be in charge of the labelling...

You present so well I wondered whether you were human.
Eli and Kate sent me. I loved your compost system, I have the three bins as well. They work well, however I’m getting older and it’s a challenge to move it from bin to bin. It’s worth the effort. Blessings!
We love to watch you and your mum in your allotment, my husband suggested Faith,Hope and Charity as names for your girlies.
Thanks Sue!
@@JessieatPlot37 Ken my hubby thinks that those names represent our gardening asperations at the allotment!!
Beautiful name's x
Another Plot37 masterpiece. So enjoyable and uplifting. Thanks again Jessie.
Hey, over 10k views on this vlog and almost 15k channel subscribers now too, well done to you both.
We got 4 day old chicks about 8 years ago - black, white, brown, grey - and as quick as a flash my daughter named them Sooty, Snowy, Coco and Bolt. Sooty is still going strong and still laying! Being imprisoned in this stupid lockdown here in Sydney Australia is stopping me from getting her some friends. Beautiful chookies Jessie - they are really cute with their feathery feet. Oh and watching you and your Mum stomping away made me laugh, which was badly needed here. Cheers from Oz.
So good to see the 🐔girls🐔 in the plot again🙂💚🌱🥂
I love a list and always put things on that I've already done.
I get side tracked doing jobs, then have to add those jobs to the original list. Never the less, a big list of jobs crossed off is a joy!
Mission creep.
@@2gooddrifters I have never heard this phrase before. You learn something new every day.
Hahaha, mission creep! Thats about sums it up!
Your plot is huge. I love it.
I get my small allotment plot today... yay. Very excited to get going with growing.
A slice of cucumber in your G&T is really refreshing, Jessie! :-))
I like watching your everything even though I sewing I have my laptop next to my sewing machine thank you
Our chooks are called Curry, Kebab and burger. We did have casserole and Tikka, but unfortunately they died.
I just love this channel! Gosh you both work so hard there, but it really looks worth it. What a great yield of veggies you got again. I am so fed up with the weather we've had, it's so cold and dull. Can't wait for your next episode, thanks Jessie! 😘
Thanks Marion! Really... the cold and dull skies are loosing their charm aren't they! Hopefully we get a crisp and sunny autumn!
Got me for a second. I had to check my phone to see when this was posted
Might I suggest "Lady Alice" for your lavender girl. It's a pretty English name meaning "of nobility ".
Thanks Jessie for another lovely vlog. Great seeing your new girlies on your plot and the joy that brings you. Cracking gin and tonic! Cheers
Very inspiring video keep up the hardwork.
Your mum should be careful though lifting potatoe bags like that she'll hurt her back .
Everybody surely loves a blackboard. I put one ......big one, up in the kitchen for my partner when he returned from hospital after a stroke so he co uld chalk up the date every morning.....it worked amazingly nd now is also used for little prompts to do, buy, or research. He loves it and so do I. We will now get one going on the polytunnel door I think xxxx
Amazing what a wall board can do isn't it! We have a little white board in the kitchen where a shopping list slowly builds up each week. Run out of something, write it down. Its made all the difference!
🙋hi from Scotland hi thank you for another great vidio your plot is looking great as I said before here in Scotland our summers are awful we get a lot of rain all summer and only a few nice days but this year we have had a lot of really hot days with high temperatures my allotment has done fantastic ,I love your beautiful wee chickens if they were mine they would be Betty ,Morage ,Sadie look forward to seeing your next vidio take care Anne Scott from Scotland
Love watching your videos, you've got my sense of humour :) My name suggestions : Millie, Molly and Mandy..................
Your crown prince in your compost is doing fab! Never seen so many bees in one flower!
Can you please do a video on your pickling onions recipe/process? I tried it for the first time last year and it didn't work very well.
That flower was very popular!!
I've just been trying to find my notes from last years recipe because it turned out so well! When i've found it i'll let you know Betty!
@@JessieatPlot37 thank you!
10:07 Yeah , really setting in fine.
As per usual, well worth the watch, your enthusiasm and funny giggle are inspirational, when things go a little wrong....just laugh and go again. The whirlies are fab. Thank you Jess. Cheers
hi the camera operator is mum well done mum 🤗🤗 better then cameraman😄😄❤️
May the Lord bless you.
Our allotment is not keen on us have a bonfire but as long as the wind blows towards the farm fields and not on a Sunday. Oh everything as to be dry as well. They would prefer if we compost everything.
Yeah, we used to have set times but they've just put in a blanket ban now.
How about queen , princess, and duchess once the dominance has been established!
Another brilliant video ,and mum struggling with remembering names - is just like me !! ,stay safe
Thanks Barry! hahah, year she's terrible at it! :D
A step back in time Jess. Sorry I couldn’t resist 😂.
The girlies are looking fabulous an your joy is infectious 👍.
Carrot box is a really great idea 💡.
The plot is so so lush.
I’d love a bbq however it’s just warm enough for me.
But I do keep my fingers crossed you get to have one after the work you have just put into making it sturdy 🤗👍👏🍀x
Hahaha, i know. I messed that up didn't i?! It was obviously the realisation September was here and i was trying to back track!!
Hoping to BBQ tomorrow!
Lavender,spotspeck,bronze.
I put things I've done on lists because otherwise I might forget I'd done them
hahaha, good point!
I love your videos, thank you. xx
Lovely video Jessie! Still hoping you might call the lavender wirly Dilly after ours who looks exactly the same. Its easy to remember as well for your Mum. By the way if you run out of lemons, put a slice of cucumber in your gin and tonic, its lovely and we use that more than lemons! Very grey here too, when we have a barbecue and its grim we have it in the cow barn lol!! Looking forward to the new vlog.
Cheers Jessie.
Always a treat watching your videos.
Nice to see that Mum has taught the girlies to walk backwards already.
She was on that pretty fast Andrew. First thing she did! :D
smashing video jessie always busy
Thanks Steven!
Hey love you’re videos! How about naming the girls after flowers eg Daisy, Petunia, & Poppy? Or if you or you’re mum have a favourite flower & you’re sister then you can name one each x
🐓 Loving the coverage of and chat about the girlies - more of that, please! Big fan of Malcolm Kingswell and Mossy Bottom bringing their ladies into their episodes too. Brilliant! 👏
Me too ! Also have a look at Edible Acres. Great for TV chickens
It makes such a difference having them!
@@JessieatPlot37 Yes I know what you mean. I have 7 rescued ones one of which must be over 12 years old. She even layed a few eggs this year. Bless her.
i think i have gone back in time 30 episodes Jessie lol
Hahahah, sorry! Bit of a glaring mistake there!!
You simply half the name one after Mum!! 💕 Let her pick the one that will take her namesake, right!?
Hahahah, that could be very confusing!
Thank you.....all just gorgeous Jessie xxx
:D
blackboard list learn to drive 😄😘
Hahaha, no chance!
Sifting the bed soil to 30 cm deep. I've been thinking about that. It's not so much that the stones are a bother but we've been having dry summers and the stony ground dries out way too fast!
Yeah, the year we tried it as an experiment.... never had carrots like it. They were fabulous!
Millie, Violet, and Grey C. sound about right for your girls. That at least is my offering....
Millie is looking like a possibility!
Another great vlog, thanks Jessie,. The girlies are early cute, I am glad they are settling in. Such a lovely distraction too. Have a good week.
Love this channel Jessie you and ur mum are an inspiration! A few years ago I sat on the carrot and parsnip bed and hand sieved it inch by inch to a depth of about 12 inches! What a job but what a harvest ! Enough stones for a rockery! Good luck with new carrots and new girlies! Ours are going off laying they are so fed up with no sun!!!
Another great video Jessie! So relaxing to watch. I look forward to every one of them. I meant to ask you if you've ever made apricot jam. Maybe they are too precious to cook....unless you had a ton of them.
Thanks Joan! No i haven't made apricot jam with my own fruit because i'm normally too busy scoffing them fresh but i have made it with ones that are going cheap at the supermarket. My normal cooking option for the apricots is a tarte tatin. Can't go wrong!
Name suggestions: flick chick, fried chick and drum stick chick?😊
Aww Miss Violet, Chilli and Sprout are coming on great guns 😜😂😍
Hahhaa! :D
A tobaacco tin can (150 Gram size) - holds bits of paper, pencil, sharpener, rubber and a ball pen - and fits in every pocket - In my opinion absolutely superior to filofax, X17 e.t.c.... 😀 I'd be lost without mine.
Hahah, does the job! The tin is a good call. i used to have a little thin note book that i had on me at all times but so often they got wet or damaged!
Yours is my favourite allotment. What a wonderful place to be.
Thanks Helen!!
Name the girls after your favourite fruit veg or flowers I’m sure your Mum wouldn’t forget then
Look forward too the next episode
Hahaha, Thanks Kevin! I love the idea of a chicken called Borlotti Bean or something! :DDD

Or maybe chard,Gin and Tonic
Love the to do list - especially crossing off. The best bit, infact it is so worth making a list just for the satisfaction of crossing off! Weather definitely being unfriendly at the moment, let's hope for a sunny September. Chickens looking gorgeous.
I like the idea of debbie or debs after blonde cus she looks blonde. John
Another stupendous Vlog Jess, packed with loads of great content. The girly-whirlies are looking fab and oh my, the flowers!! Crossing off items on one’s to do list is enormously satisfying isn’t it. Gosh, your vlogs could be three hours long and yet it seems like I’ve watched only three quick minutes. You, mum, girlies, Lily, your wonderful garden and construction projects and your endless to do list are truly the highlight of my viewing week. We are in the midst of lots of rain as remnants of Hurricane Ida blow through the Midwest. My tomatoes, chilis and onions are going great and fingers crossed my single, prized, softball size bush watermelon makes it to fruitful harvest. Keep the great stuff coming Jess. ♥️
Stupendous! Wow! :D
The crossing-off-things-on-a-list is a fantastic feeling, it seems to give more of a sense of achievement that actually doing the thing! lol.
Glad your toms/chillies/onions are going well and i have everything crossed for the Watermelon!!
Another lovely video.
We use those noodles and another thing you can add is an egg. Just crack a fresh egg into it as it’s boiling and stir it. It’s yummy.
Nice garden
You, your Mum and the Girly Whirlies are such a joy. Try naming them according to fave musicians perhaps. I want to come live with you guys 😁 Cheers from a very hot humid part of Canada this year. My Grandma and Nanny are from Essex.
Thanks Roxanne! :D
If you use a jet flame, tge plastic sticks and doesn't rip. It doesn't run, the plastic just melts and no fires.
Hi DN, yeah. I have sealed the edges before and that stopps some of it but i still find it frays in the centre after a while!
The girls are gorgeous... my name suggestions would be Greta, Ava and Marilyn 💕
So odd to think it’s September already as it was only yesterday wasn’t it that we were worried we would never be able to sow anything. Where does Lily sleep when she’s at the allotment? Yes your sisters place was gorgeous I enjoyed seeing everything. I’ve planted brassicas for winter and hopefully they will be available for dinners. I too love the fall on a sunny crisp day there is nothing better. We cannot have fires at all except a few weeks in spring and fall so fingers crossed we can in late September or October. The girlies are lovely for sure and will be fun watching their progress. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden and on with us ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe
Oh I know Ali... Seriously, we were all chomping at the bit to get things in the ground and then all of a sudden! It's September! I'm going to get sowing the Mizuna you sent me this week!
@@JessieatPlot37 excellent I hope it grows well for you 👍
Watched your video this morning, fueled by coffee and inspiration, headed over to my allotment to turn my compost bin . I take my Staffie " Willow " with me she loves to help ! Already cleared shed ready for winter , so looking for more ideas for next week. Enjoy your G& T's. Cheers.
Nice video Jessie.👍
Great work on the new carrot beds. Sifting the soil is a bit of a chore but well worth it with the results
Hey Jessie!
Nice to see a couple new beds going in! There is really never enough growing space for all the wonderful things.
Chickens are the best! I rarely walk past the run without at least having a fly-by hello and chat with my girls. I’m sure yours will soon get over some of the skittishness. I did grow some oat fodder for mine a couple times in the winter (alongside my microgreens) which the girls seemed to enjoy. We get the kind of winter that most of the grass and weeds die out.
Nice potatoes. I’ve pretty much always grown in bags although tried some in-ground this year. I will skip an overly detailed why it was a poor experiment, but realize there is a convenience to bags I really enjoy. Much easier to “hill” for sure and easier harvesting. Next year I’ll save the in-ground for other plants.
🥂
Thanks Leanne, yeah always trying to cram a bit more growing space in!
Hmm.... oat fodder. I might try that.
Yeah, this was our first year in bags and we'll do it again. Like you say, the earthing up is so much easier! It wasn't a very good experiment for us either but mainly due to weather. Next year!
Great video, you have both got some good jobs done love your new girlie's, they are all gorgeous 😍 love the way you get stuck into building your own beds and digging out, reusing the grass to cover a patched area. Looking forward to seeing how your carrots will grow In its new bed 🙂 your blackboard is fab great way of listing jobs to do 🙂
So Blessed and Beautiful you and mum and around you ❤
They will reinstate fires . Because if flammable material builds up accidental fires are far more dangerous.
Flammable stuff won't build up. If you store rubbish you just loose your plot. So people have to remove it some how.
@@JessieatPlot37 I’ve been on my plot for thirty years. When I started one person let and regulated what went on about ten sites . Now we have 20 on the committee who come up with a new rule every month for our 1 site.
Have you tried the cardboard method before at all? Cardboard suppresses the weeds, grass or any seeds you may have disturbed. But it also breaks down so that you still have access to the depth below the raised beds.
Great vlog the compost looks good not that I no much lol love the new carrot beds great BBQ and girls are looking lovely
Thanks Gary!
Another lovely video Thankyou ! Dotty Rita and Violet suggestion for girlie whirlies ❤️
Thanks Lorraine! I have been calling the millefleur Dotty a bit!
This blog was a charm to watch; so many components: the chalkboard so you can visualize your to do list, turning the compost ( I sure need to do this), building the barbecue, visiting the chickens, making & eating lunch (my favorite enjoying sitting in the sunshine in the garden). Your garden looks marvelous in spite of the weird weather. Hard to believe we're almost at autumn. Where did the summer go? EJK in 🇺🇸
Thanks Evelyn! It is hard to believe its nearly autumn... :O
My last chich Bigg Eggo is 7 I won't get any more until Eggo has gone, she hed grapes red currants egg and bacon pie and apple and blackberry pie corn and meeal worms for tea, and I have to put her to be and get her up, God bless big eggo!
:D Bigg Eggo is living the life!!
Our old girl The Trace was a bit like that. Looked after like a queen!
Better cover that fab new carrot bed Jess, or Lilly will be in there like a shot 'fertilizing' all your newly planted seeds! 😱
Hahahah, yes, it got a cover pretty quick! :D
Love your vlogs, my suggestion for the girlies is cosmos, Dahlia, and ivy for the boss chick 🐣 xx
Loving your videos! We've had various names for our chickens, starting with Gertie, Harri, Henri, Georgie. We then had 2 chicks under Gertie when she went broody who were called Spec and Dot as they were tiny. Spec turned into a giant cockeral so his name became ironic... Then we had Grace Shelly (Gracie) and Margaret Hatcher (Maggie) and Kellogg the yellow cockeral. Then we moved on to herbs and spices, with Pepper and Rosemary, Nutmeg and Ginger.
If you put a grid over the grass (like you have on there house) it stops them digging it up and the grass grows through it
Thanks Maxine, i might install something like that!
Your pink firs look superb! Mine were all quite small but they taste so good. I grew mine from a leftover potato from a bag of Ocado pink firs and did what Ash said, chitted, cut in to 5, dried slightly and planted. Got about 50 but a bit smaller than ideal but all edible 😀
Hi Lousie! Oh yeah, i remember Ash saying he was cutting his up. I've never tried that, might have a go this year!

In the United States 🇺🇸 we use wood ashes in our gardens!!! They are great mix them with the soil!! Do you do the same in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧?
Lovely vlog as always, the plot looks amazing. I wish I could visit, haha! And thanks for being such an inspiration! 🐔🌱
Today I harvested my first carrots grown in a mortar tub. They're pretty small because I sowed them too thickly and wasn't succesful in thinning them out. 😅 But otherwise pretty succesful this way! 🥕
Thanks Tjitske! Ah, the thinning out of the carrots is always so difficult! But small carrots are gorgeous anyway aren't they!
Put some sand in your soil. No more sifting needed.
My soil is basically sand already! I'm fighting against the sand!
Thankyou Hiya Jess and Muma. Fabulous job on the bbq. I saw on a video where the girl took some lengths of wood, a piece of fine mesh and stapled together. It was sized to fit over a wheelbarrow. Therefore a larger amount of sifting soils can be done. Just a thought? Take care, Cheers Luv Ontario Canada 🐝
Hello! Yeah, i've thought about making a barrow sieve so many times but its always when i'm about to do the job... so i just make do with the small one and think i'll make one for next time then forget! I will try and get it on the blackboard!

Blackboard is a brilliant idea. I always lose my to do lists lol.
Have a great week Jessie .....cheers 🥂 x
Girlie names.....marigold, blossom, & poppy 🥴🤷🏻♀️
:D I know, they are so interesting to watch. I've never had them as young as these girls are and watching them find out about stuff is fascinating!
My favourite thing to do with the tree spinach is blanch the leaves and par boil some fluffy potatoes (with a bit of turmeric in the water). A pile of grated garlic and ginger in a pan with hot oil , some roasted cumin seeds and throw the potatoes/spinach in. A load of salt over the pot and wait for it to be all crispy/crunchy. So good! With a curry or keema mince or something. Or even just scoffed with flat bread. The spinach has a really strong flavour so it can take quite a lot of spice and cooking without fading!
I also make tree spinach and turnip samosas which are scrum!!
Ahh, Marigold Blossom and poppy...sweet!
Jessie at Plot 37 ahh thanks Jessie 🙏 I like the sound of lots of spices 👌 I will try that. It’s such a beautiful plant, I’m not really bothered if we eat much of it. In fact I’m gonna grow some in my main garden next year just coz it’s pretty. 😍
