@Tom Ffrench BoJack and community i guess?
Okay, that was pretty good.
Abc is easy
Its like counting up to 3
That really is streets ahead
so A is best B second and C third
that's how i see it and it's right for me
I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this in the comments, but there’s some heartwarming brilliance to Pierce being the only one to make it to the North Pole with Abed. Earlier that season, Pierce’s mother passed away and he had a crisis of faith. He knows what it’s like to lose a mom and have your status quo shaken. So him sticking by his side and trying to actually help him is really sweet (it also makes the line about him not going home for Christmas kind of sad too).
Pierce stayed because of the cookies, not to help him
@@georgy2596 The cookies were gone, but he came back anyway
A good observation to make but Pierce didn’t question his faith
It's a small detail but I like how as Pierce connects with Abed he also starts to see wonderland. At the start he says he can only see the study room. Then once they get to the cave of frozen memories he says "what do youean cave-like? it's a cave" and by the end of the episode he's asking abed what he sees. I just find it nice as one of the few episodes where Pierce is genuinely empathetic.
Rewatching it recently, it made me realize how much Pierce wants to be a part of the group as much as he acts the opposite. That was a genuine moment of Pierce connecting with Abed, and then we get to D&D where none of them, even Abed the DM, invited him to join. Which then leads well into the overdose episode.
"It's the first season of Lost. It represents lack of pay-off"
That's a big _fucking_ *_O O F_*
With a side of game of thrones season 8
Having watched season 1 of Lost I'm now sightly confused about this joke. Is it specifically taking a shot at season 1, or the eventually series end (which I know is famous for the lack of payoff)?
@@artyb27 The eventual series end.
@Ryan Akwar I wonder if that's the point in that case. You can't have a devastating lack of payoff without exceptional build-up. They must have been saying season 1 was that build-up.
@Ryan Akwar who's the guest by the way?.. I'm now wondering if it's the Asian dude with the crutch that Jeff shoots in the head in season 6 and desperately hoping I'm not being racist by jumping to that.
"The meaning of Christmas is the idea that Christmas has meaning" is maybe the most profound line of dialogue I've ever encountered in media. It completely changed the way that I thought about the holidays, and allowed to me to embrace that I'm obsessed with them haha
Same!!!
Yeah, it’s awesome. I’m not religious but I think the whole season between Diwali and the eastern New Year as just a season of lights and celebration and love is a beautiful thing. For some it’s about worship, for some it’s just about warmth and light in times of cold and darkness.
I really love how this episode doesn’t just make Abed’s weirdness a joke and he isn’t really a comic relief. It would be really easy to just make this an episode where everyone laughs at Abed being weird.
Bog bang theory intensifies
Its like the wackier the episode is, the more serious abed becomes
It's so great to have a main character who is clearly on the autism spectrum, but who is treated like an actual character instead of an obstacle or walking punchline.
That's why I love Abed so much. Abed subverts so many aspects of the "nerd" trope" because he's written and acted with so much depth and nuance. He's not just a punchline but a real character who just happens to have hobbies and passions that many consider to be nerdy.
@@videogamenostalgia I think atypical is a show that does this quite well. The main character has autism and while there some comedy, he never feels like a joke and I haven't seen it in awhile but I remember there being some heartfelt moments

Abed is still one of my favourite characters of all time. They combined someone that could so easily be a one-joke chapter or a dumb autistic stereotype and somehow made an incredible realistic character from it. Apparently Dan Harmon realised he was autistic doing research for writing Abed
My God! It's like doing research on autism is beneficial for everyone or something!
His behavior is closer to psychopathy than autism.
Psychopaths have difficulty interpreting facial expression and appropriate behavior per social situation. The only thing that sets him apart from a true psychopath is that he doesn't interact with others solely for his own benefit, thus firefighting the accompanying traits like being opportunistic, deceptive and manipulative. However, these traits easily define Jeff's core personality.
Autism exists on a spectrum and is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Autistics have difficulty with communication and social situations because they are so deeply introverted that they are prone to disregarding external stimulation including people talking to them or even imminent danger.
There is an argument for Abed possibly having Asperger's Syndrome, but he is far too coordinated, open to behavior modification and he is not nearly offensive enough. He also does not have an over developed sense of self worth, which is typical of Asperger's.
Apparently Starburns' actor, Dino Stamatopoulos, is behind the stop-motion having created Starburns Industries after his first year on Community! They're also behind the film Anomalisa and helped with the set-up of Rick and Morty
That fact still amazes me.
Yeah he also crated Moral Orel if you’ve ever seen that
He also did the voice of Drinky Crow
Louis CK mentions Dino a few times in his specials
He might be Greek. -poulos endings in last names are Greek
Holy shit the backwards “someBODY” as John Oliver walks out that door is perfect. Also love how other characters have names, but John Oliver is just John Oliver
I heard the name John Oliver several times in this video, but I was NOT prepared to actually hear his voice over in a stop motion picture.

He doesn’t mention that he mixed pills with alcohol. He just says “he was scared of getting older so he went into a coma.”

I love Abed not only for being a great character, but also because he's half Polish half Arabic. During the time I was watching Community for the first time, I had an internet friend from Kuwait, who also had watched the show. Abed was like a bridge between us, her being Arabic and me being Polish.
He is indeed such a unique and relatable character
dani pudi himself is also half polish actually. but he's not arab irl, he's indian
Troy is actually the heart of the show. He's the foil to Jeff, the main love interest for Annie and Britta in some seasons, kind of the son Pierce never had, and he has a great relationship with Abed.
i would partly agree with that but i feel like Troy not being in the last two seasons made the role ultimately go to abed overall

My absolute favorite subtle character thing that I WISH got properly addressed in the episode is why Pierce stayed with Abed the whole time. Pierce’s mom had died earlier in the season, so this was his first Christmas without his mom, just like Abed.
I'm pretty sure Abed doesn't think his life is a TV show, he just relates it to a TV show to understand life better.
Yeah i think you're spot on! As an autistic person, me and many of us use pieces of media to understand the world around us, sometimes obsessively clinging to it. I havent gotten around to watching community just yet, but it looks pretty damn good.
He said this multiple times
"Community never does an animated episode just for the sake of doing it."
Intro to Felt Surrogacy: 👁👄👁
Technically isn’t fully animated so it doesn’t count. We’ve got a perfect record!
The gas leak year does strange things, but we're past that
Intro to Felt Surrogacy was a good episode I will die on that hill
@@sketchyjulia It is good, it's just that in a series with great episodes good seems lesser than usual due to the curve.
He did exclude that episode to be fair, along with the parallel timeline one. It was pretty frustrating to see the Season 4 writers piggyback off the popularity of Remedial Chaos Theory and use it to jump the shark, kinda retrospectively taints my favourite episode.
Who am I kidding, I'll never hate Remedial Chaos Theory.
Correction: Troy is actually Jehovah's most secret witness✨
Wasn't that established in the next season's Christmas special though?
@@GodOfOrphans It's first mentioned in season one's Christmas special, where Shirley assumes all her friends are Christian, and we learn each character has a separate faith
@@dipdop9734 I meant the most secret aspect as the excuse to participate in Christmas festivities that was established in the Glee Club musical Christmas special which I'm pretty sure is after Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas.

🎶 We have to save Christmas to save our friends 🎶
I'm a freelance animator, and my mentor who taught me stop motion worked on this special (along with basically ANY stop motion production you can think of, she's incredible)! I remember her saying that this was a lot of fun, and that the team was super respectful of the animators. A lot of live-action production teams don't really understand how animation works, or how much time and effort goes into it, so they're kind of dismissive and frustrating to deal with, but she said that the Community people were lovely and courteous. It shows in the product, as well, because all of their parodies always feel like they're done with a lot of love and understanding of the source material!

Wait a minute, don't disrespect season 6, Elroy was a goddam gem.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Frankie (no offense to Paget, of course), but I was a fan of Elroy. That may be because I’m very partial to Keith David, though.
Elroy just had some really funny, weird bits like “There’s no green 3 in Billiards. Where could this have come from?”

As a Muslim myself, I've always had a love and envy for Christmas especially now when during our own holidays family gatherings are depressing and feels like a chore because we only gather because of self image and a bit of obligation.
as an atheist (who is kinda ex-christian but not really bc i was like seven and didn't understand religion until i did enough to turn away from it) i still celebrate christmas and enjoy it, and like he says in the video (and how britta says) christmas isnt even actually about jesus originally so you can still celebrate :D
@@thatgaylibertarian4518 I'm not the celebrating type but I love watching the old Christmas movies and specials. They're so magical to me 🥰
I, too, discovered Community this year. I love a solid 90% of the show.
I watched it because one of my old math teachers recommended it
Something I'd like to add onto this just a smig: Christmas has evolved into much more than a Christian holiday, so many common traditions or images we have for Christmas aren't even Christian. Hanging a wraith is a Wiccan tradition, kissing under a misteltoe is Druidic, decorating a tree in an ode to the god Saturn, etc. It's a collection of a lot of general beliefs and traditions which is why it's a fitting national Holiday for the US, a nation founded on multiple cultures and people inhabiting a new world. You don't have to be a Christian to celebrate it and you don't have to follow the traditions, it can be anything you believe it to be because that's what it has evolved into.
Well said!
Yeah its christmas.... where did all my money go?
👏👏👏
I think the think Schaff brought up with how the church moved the date of Christmas to accommodate the people and not the people conforming to what the church did illustrates this point really well. Christmas isn't by a long stretch just about Jesus. Most European cultures had some kind of winter celebration because of how important the harvest was and how devastating winter could be, so all these regional variants kept being celebrated even with Christianity in the mix.
Very well put.
Just in time for the "Larry, I'm on Ducktales" meme.

Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas is definitely one of Community's strongest episodes, but I dislike how it meshes with season 1's Christmas episode. The whole point of that episode had to do with how most of the main cast didn't celebrate Christmas, and it did a great job showing how the holiday season feels for other cultures. When Annie & Abed just announce all of a sudden that they actually celebrated Christmas the whole time, it kinda contorts the meaning of that previous episode. Season 3's Christmas episode takes this much further, and by then it starts to feel like the writers see the cast's cultural differences are an annoyance to write around, and not an important part of who they are.
Community's still tied for my favorite show of all time tho
I get what you're saying for sure, though in the first season's Xmas episode, i feel like the impetus for the characters even revealing their religions was more to get out of joining Shirley and her Christian shenanigans 😄
I’ve been a fan of Community from the Beginning and it warms my heart that it’s gained so many fans this year. It’s the only show where I actually cried when it got canceled. I related with Abed a lot in high school and being the weird person who relates to people through movies and books, it was the show that made me realize, “Wow, I’m not the only one.” And it was the thing I watched every week to make me happy. Abed’s Christmas special was definitely an episode I watched over and over when it was released.

Ok, I love how you mention both that Christmas is religious, and that many non-christians celebrate regardless. Christmas is no longer just a religious holiday, in many countries it's a national holiday, which means it applies, no matter how you celebrate it.
That's also my complaint with the movement to cut the phrase "Merry Christmas" out of the holidays, it's not just a religious thing anymore, its celebrated by all sorts of people as is. It doesn't need any extra cleaning for Political correctness sake.

@@dragonslayer2255 nothings wrong with it, but there's this push to replace it with Happy Holidays for inclusiveness sake. I have no problem with Happy Holidays, but I don't like that some people are trying to replace Merry Christmas because its got 'Christ' in it.
