Should have tried this on hardtails
Nah, should have gone no suspension at all
Exactly what I was thinking
With bikepacking gear. Amazing how well my CF fatike wheels held up to 50# of cargo, 35# of bike, and 190# of me through Utah and Nevada a couple years ago.
They won't do it because this is a sponsored video.
I'm going from fs to hardtail in a few weeks and I'm already scared hahaha
When they ride faster than you without a tyre.... fml.
Hahaha ikr!
F-kn word.
...and when the wheels are twice the price of your bike (;
True
@@erichbachman7363 nah the price is acctually ok if you look what real good Bikeparts cost this days
haha what a fun day all in the name of science!
Should of had Pilgrim with you .
Not science. Ad revenue ;)
Edit: but those are a hell of a set of wheels :o
Worlds colliding. So weird so see the back garden in another channel.
Turns out I have been a scientist for a while now!

As a trail maintainer I really appreciate the trail respect disclaimer! Also great video Blake!
Amen and God bless you! And Zeus and Shiva and Greys and Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Youre doing the lords work!

I'm sure most would because as Blake said you'll work terribly hard to keep great trails great.
Blake: âthatâs actually dreamsâ
Sam pilgrim: đ
đwhat you talking about ..
Today it's gonna be epic!
Maybe this was a hint
@@Ulysse.W Sam pilgrim runs huge cases of cement stairs with a metal edge on rims...no tires. That is what he said about it.
Imagine the wheel snapping on the first jump
Cut!
Lol. Cut!! No content this week!!
We'll just get the viewers to send in some bike injuries đ
Not for a paid ad
Now imagine that wheel with a tyre insert and a DH casing tyre....invincible wheelset
Wish I had a better paying job lol
Spank rims are about $100 each. Learn to build a wheel and use your existing hubs! I've been building with Spank rims for a while now and love them.
@@Pastamistic I build my wheels, could barely afford an XT hub lol
THIS is how you do advertising! Haha a super entertaining video, and if Spank sponsored this, and this it what it took to destroy their wheel then I am convinced that these will be my next set!
Hey Jorge, all the credit goes to the team at GMBN, it was their idea to do this wheel wrecking video, and we were stoked to see the outcome!
Iâm officially a Spank believer.
Same here. I just wonder what Spank model it is?
@@vincentp4969 1:35 looks Spank 359 vibrocore while 1:37 looks like Spank 350 Vibrocore. So they've tested both 350 and 359 vibrocores.
I m currently on the market for a wheel set and now Spank is on the list!
4:40 "It's so wierd to case!" Not for me. Not by a long shot.
When you case⊠but with your front tyre đ
Danny M. did the similar video with carbon wheel in urban environment if I recall correctly, bare rim blazing down thru concrete stairs.
Yes with a santa cruz reserve wheel
Yep, and it took several runs to destroy them. Carbon rims can be absurdly strong as well.
after Blake started smashing the wheel on the rock , I went to their webpage.
Thats why spank lets them try destroy it. So people see it n buy them. 90% advertising n 10% fun đ€Ł
@@rabc5959 all videos are advertising something đ€« advertise by proof of claim is fine by me!

What a video! This is how all ads should be made.
Blake & Sam, my favourite combo!
Riding on bare rims, that's impressive.
This video absolutely confirms my tire replacement pattern.
Ride a front tire till its approaching bald, then move it to the rear.
Rear traction is optional.
@@marcalvarez4890 Seems back tires are just silencers anyway. :D
Promotional feature or not, that was utterly amazing! Very impressive stuff
Come to Derby in Australia
What about some XC 24-spoked wheels though?
Best advertising ever! I want these rims! I currently ride the nukeproff scout with the dt Swiss rims and I missed one jump and hit a curb with my back wheel and I have a dent. Definitely will get these rims for my self and my son who rides with me on the same trails.
After watching the video, I went out and got myself a Monster energy drink. Thanks guys
You should also invite Sam Pilgrim for the purpose of this video though
If halo wheels sponsored this video instead of spank, then i think sam might've been on it
But then it would be a 15 second video.
He's done this to Halo wheels.
@@sapinva true true đ
15:31 the wheel takes the stick and tried to chuck it back lmao
Good job and good fun, Blake and Sam, getting those wheels to the breaking point--beyond the breaking point, really, as it took more than jumps and trails to bust 'em up. And fair play to Spank for welcoming the abuse of those wheels--it is clear they make a strong, excellent wheel, most impressive. And in the mid-Seventies, strong BMX wheels were needed to compliment strong steel frames, and Skyway introduced its one-piece Tuff-Wheel and that wheel was great, pretty much bombproof. And they guaranteed them and they were true to their word--I finally bent a rear wheel in early '79 and sent if off to Skyway in Sacramento in Northern California and promptly received a new Tuff-Wheel.
This has been one of the greatest videos for me by far this year on GMBN Sam and Blake are the funniest together đ. Time we all get ourselves a set of these rims đđ€
That was the best lunch time video I've come across in a long time. Thanks for the laugh..... and the info. Guess I know what brand I'm getting if my Turbo Levo needs new wheels.
I just had my i9 hydra hubs built with spank 395+ wheels! I don't think ill regret a thing, and so far I love them!
Hilarious video! It reminded me a bit of the video Danny did with Santa Cruz. Loved itđ€
Im getting myself spanks! Kudos to GMBN and the duo
Such a good video ... want to see more madness with blake and Sam đ€
Man, I was so sad yet so amused by this video, then I was super impressed by just how much abuse those rims took. When my rims wear out (dt swiss 533d front and mavic ex630 rear) I'll definitely be buying these to replace em.
Current full wheelset:
DT Swiss 533d laced onto a Shimano 15mm TA front hub, 32h
Mavic ex630 laced onto a Shimano XT 10mm qr rear hub, 36h
Continental trail king 2.4 on the front
Vittoria Mazza 2.4 on the rear
I need to get a new rear wheel, I guess I know what I am getting now!đđ great video!
One of the best mtb Viedeos this year
Been running Spank Spoon 32s on my enduro bike for 3 years. Ride every week, in the Alps where I live. Riding includes bike parks, trails, and some nasty rocky tech. I've only had one slightly loose spoke in all that time and two dings from big rocks. I'm 95kg, so there's a lot of force going through them every week. Best buy I've made in that time.
That was the best GMBN video ever.
Love that ending
Stoked to see the Helfare name on gmbn! Right on Matt Ben and Sam!
SO HAPPY I WENT WITH SPANKS NOW
Am I still ride it homeâŠ.. hilarious. One of the best vids in a long time
Spank rims are sick! have them on my hardtail and enduro with hope pro 4 hubs and they take a hell of a beating and just keep rolling đ€
This is one of my favorite gmbn vids
"I weigh 110 kilos"
UhhhâŠhey BlakeâŠ.you know Iâve been thinking of selling my kidneys but couldnât figure out what to buy with the money.
But now I know what Iâm gonna use the money for: âŠâŠ..talent.
Iâll be able to buy talent before Iâll be able to afford a set of spanks. Lol cheers mate! Great show!
Etienne Gurnel did that with a spank oozy in chatel without a tire. He jumped over the road and river gap. It was like 8 years ago. The rim survived but was damaged on the edges.
In a moment of weakness I let a friend use my bike while I was injured, being a roadie he put 100psi in my tyres and blew my rear to bits. Completely wrecked my rim, blew the rim out and twisted its profile. All without leaving the garage.
I'm sorry wtf is wrong with him? Even roadies now that you don't put 100 psi in a MTB tire.
Lol, I laughed way to hard at this. Also very impressed with the abuse a Mtn bike wheel can actually with stand before failure.
Look at Blake going all Office Space on that rim! đ
Iâm using a Spank wheelset on an ebike. Iâm quite happy with them. After one year of riding, had to do only minor trueing.
Wow can't believe those wheels took so much punishment
Great video Blake and Sam in the name of science đđ€
That hurts! You Guys are insane đ đ đ
Man! These guys are riding better without rear tires than I can in ideal conditions!!! Gnarly!
That was AWESOME!
Honestly, best sales pitch Iâve seen in a long time.
And the guy at the end that broke it⊠only happened cause he was over the weight limit. Haha. What a wheel
Watching you boys ride those bare rims down the trail was like nails on a chalkboard. But I couldn't look away lol
Truly amazing
Awesome video dude as always thank you!đđŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó ż Depends on the wheel!lol
Hence the reason a pro wheel builder of a few decades only recommends Spank rims. My personal favorite wheelset is a set of Hope Pro4 hubs laced to F350 and R359 for the best bang for the $. My own tuned set of hoops. Cheers!
Think what actually happened was the wheel got board and wanted to go home! đ€Ł
The sound of the bare rim on the rocks....ptsd. thx!....heheh
Cool vid guys!
These wheels are just preposterous! I need a pair in my DH bike sooooo bad xD
I've been riding a set of 28h Spank Oozy 295s since 2015. I picked up a rock dent in the side wall of the front one at some point or another. I just kept riding it. Still going strong! I've never even checked the spokes tension and they are still true as the day I bought them.
Hey Colby! Those Oozy 295's are in our top 3 favorite rims profiles we've ever produced! We'd still be making them if it wasn't for the demand trends for wider rims these days!
@@spankindustries7875 Yeah, I want to keep the rear but would like to run a slightly wider front for a 2.5/2.6 tire. But you don't make anything to replace them. I've never had an issue with running 28 spokes. (Guess I don't ride hard enough. lol). Would love to buy the same rim to swap straight in place (assuming the spoke lengths would still work.) Don't really want to buy a new hub, too. Ya know? A red w/ black logo 35mm 28h would be perfect. Feel like making a one-off for me? lol
Awesome! Just what i needed to convince me to get a new pair of wheels after mine broke
Within the first minute he's riding over rocks *with no tyre on the rim* đ€Łyou weren't joking when you said the wheels are going to get a hammering.
âonly some minor trail abuse, just trued and serviced and dead straightâ
Can I have a set to test on my hardtail for Science?!
Legend u inspire and help me improve
I got these rims front and rear. They put up with me trying to gap everything on the trail
i managed to break a spank wheel on the first day i got it lol
I broke one too. But to be honest any wheel would have broken with what I did. I happily replaced it with another spank rim!
@@michaelspencer7019 yeah me too. after the wheek got the dent i just went to the bike shop and after they just jammed the rim back and the wheel stayed as it is
@@randomguypoopypapa8988 so you never actually broke it if the bike shop was able to true it
You got a warrantee replacement right?
@@marcalvarez4890 I didn't. It would be deemed abuse / stupidity. I'm a heavy guy! I was running low pressures, it was a big huck to flat and I caught a rock and put a massive ding in the rim.
More of these please , like forks
Job well done...need to buy some spank rims now.
17 minutes of pure entertainment and an eye opener to how durable mtb wheels can be. Im sure your entry level wheels may not survive as long, but who else wants some spank wheels after that?
Hey Josh, actually.....you may be surprised. Its a combination of the Oobah patented profile of our rim design (the wavy cross section) and the Dynamal Alloy we use that gives the rim integrity and added strength. The 359 model tested in this video (and similarly our 350 rim) is the lightest, radially compliant and shallowest rim profiles in our range, so actually not the ones built for the greatest strength! Our SPIKE 33 rim and Spoon 32 rims are slightly heavier, but they have a deeper rim depth and the profile design is engineered on our "bombproof" mission! The SPIKE rims are sleeved, and the SPOON rims are pinned. They retail from $69.90 for a SPOON rim.
I just found these wheels and I find this hard of a test? Guess Iâm buying them now. Plus the price isnât bad at all
Blake on Monday morning: Doddy, I reckon there's something going on with my rear wheel, can you have a look?
Blake & Sam = đ„đ„đ„
those wheels are incredable
Iâve never ever seen anyone this happy at 16:40 when the wheel broke đđ đ„¶
Well thats one way to advertise some wheels... Honestly amazing how well they held up.
0:06 I sometimes like to hit trails without my wheel's, it makes the ride more intresting
Crazy man..
now thats what i call testing a wheel
Just called my local MTB shop...they don't sell any wheels for what I want to do with them. These wheels look pretty good..now hope they are
It was so nerve racking. I feel like I had just watched an action movie. Iâm waiting for my adrenaline to come down.
I use the exact rim. Now I can send it without fearing my rim tackoing
You can now definitly save some money on new tires!

I wish I had 1/10th the riding ability of you two. Those wheels look amazing and the hubs sound great I would absolutely love a set of these on my bike. You have to crack a few eggs to make an omelette, all in the name of science. Dr Blake and Dr Sam official MTB scientists. I think these wheels would survive a 40 foot drop to flat. the sun ringle duroc rim on my nukeproof scout is already cracked at the spoke nipples, only rode it for 2600km over 50/50 asphalt and gravel roads :O
You forgot the classic "I just reversed over my wheel with my car in the parking lot test"..... though I am sure that wheel would still survive
A true classic!
Should try to use some thin gravel tyres for the descend to be a little safety
"Dude, im gonna land so sideways" đ
The ride so fast without a tire wow!
I had dh casing maxxis DHRIIs on my E13 alloy rim and absolutely smashed it to bits on one impact. Bombing grass hills with hidden concrete drains is bad, really bad.

The face on the others watching what Sam was doing are like WTF. So it is 110kg and a real smash after hours of giving it to the rim to everything including a massive tyreless skid.
This would have been amazing on a hardtail, but wow. Still impressed
