With the release of their self-titled debut, The Ocean Blue quickly achieved widespread acclaim and radio & MTV airplay with top 10 Modern Rock/College Radio hits like "Between Something and Nothing", "Drifting, Falling", and "Vanity Fair". Followed by Cerulean, Beneath the Rhythm and Sound , and See The Ocean Blue, the band's fanbase grew with each release.
The band continued to several records, including 2000's Davy Jones Locker and 2004's Waterworks. In 2013, the band released their first full length record in a decade, Ultramarine, on Korda Records. In 2015, the band worked with Sire Records to reissue their first three albums on vinyl, and toured North America and South America, where some of their most passionate fans reside.
In 2019, the band returned with the beautifully powerful Kings and Queens / Knaves and Thieves, and has continued to tour for this release and the newly re-issued vinyl of See The Ocean Blue (2022) and Davy Jones Locker (2023). - Hudba
The Ocean Blue, The Sundays, The Sugar Cubes, The Smithereens, The Church and many more, what great memories, this coming from a metalhead \m/
Same here \m/
Absolutely!! They are all still amazing and all in my phone playlist!!!
Do you know some other great bands? I’m looking for songs.. I’m getting tired of the songs I already have !
The cult. The cars
Charlatans UK are great. Album, Some Friendly
Thirty. Years. This song just never gets old. What a classic.
❤✊
30 years!!!! NO!!!!! Where did the time go?
A song from their 1989 album.
Are you serious?! Just knew them. Lovely.
I’m only 19 but my dad grew up in the 80s and 90s and has passed the great real music on to me!!!
This band is an American treasure.
Not really. They're below average and ok to hear when walking thru a grocery store
@Poom You never heard their music, do you?
Cus they were a one hit wonder in alternative. They weren't mainstream. And that's fine. Good music like this should only be heard by people who appreciate it.
Another great band Riverside(USA)
@@poom641says the guy who likes Journey.
May of 2023 anyone? This is STILL EPIC!!
been stuck on the song cerulean for a hard couple weeks now for some reason.
This song transcends time...still brings back memories of a day at high school when I discovered New Wave..Tom
the haircut
Stop using the word epic!! It has been over killed
You bet listen to this song almost every day love it
The greatest band you've never heard of.
between them and 'OURS' unless you live in NYC or NJ. Then you've probably heard of OURS and Jimmy Gnecco. if you haven't, i guarantee you wont' be disappointed!
I couldn't agree more!
Hope Tried It so true, but we know.
So simple, can u see me.
You are absolutely right there. What a great sound. There was a Canadian band, out in the early 80's, that didn't get the recognition it deserved. The band was Breeding Ground. If you can find them on here, give them a listen. They were great.
I was a big fan. Had their first album, or their one and only album, for which this song is from on cassette back in high school. This was played on (college) radio quite a bit in SF Bay Area.
Its got an "Echo and the Bunnymen" vibe to it. Good stuff
Most amazing to me is that they're from Hershey, PA and not England!
The opening riff, the breakdown at 1:50, the guitar solo, make sit one of the best alt-pop songs of all time, ranking there with Cure's Just Like Heaven
The bridge there is perfection...the guitar solo and ride on the drums is...chills.
The second guitar riff, one of the greatest examples of the power of chromatic structure in music theory...brilliant and a sheer delight!
Please tell me more about the chromatic structure in this song. I can’t wait to hear your explanation.
Go listen to 'Reptile' by The Church. ;-)
@@Chrisamusic1 I googled and I'm listening now. I still don't get it. Is it the way the pretty notes go back and forth between up and down notes? I love electric guitar and this Ocean Blue song is one of my favorites from college when I saw them play at UC Davis 30 years ago.
I could live a lifetime in that moment
I was lucky enough to land in a Music Theory class my senior year in high school. Honestly, before that I took music for granted but it truly is another language in and of itself.
The Ocean Blue gets it!!!
American band with an english heart. Love it.
Crazy how an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia comes over me when that guitar kicks in.
The guitar in this and Reptile by the Church were the best sounds I had growing up. I just feel young listening to them...
aye, heard it on the radio today, totally forgot about it. had to look it up, couldn't quite remember the name.
Brian Kelly Holy shit, me too. Loved The Church. Haven't listened to Starfish in the longest time! I've been trying to purge my memory, lately, of as many bands (mostly obscure) as possible that I loved. Stuff like Railway Children, House of Love, Ride, Stone Roses, The Wonder Stuff, OMD, New Order, Crowded House, DM, The Hollow Men, Lightening Seeds, Big Audio Dynamite, Hoodoo Gurus, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc.
One of the best shows I ever saw had OMD opening up for New Order. I've seen almost every one of those bands live - some of the best sounds ever. Mode, House of Love, Crowded House - you've got some fine taste in music :D
chinafakeeggs - I think I've listed to that song like 1000 times over my lifetime. The whole album is great.
What a beautiful song!! I grew up in the 80's and I never heard of these guys! Heard this by chance. Just goes to show......it's never too late to discover hidden gems!
Yes,this is a rare gem.I heard this by chance because the radio station in San Francisco had an Indie hour.
I saw them in concert around 1990 "by accident" -- they were the opening act for the Psychedelic Furs. I instantly became a fan and bought all their CDs.
These guys still sell out venues in the indie circuit to this day. Their music seems to be remembered way more positively than many groups who were more mainstream than them at the time. I got to say, as someone who's relatively new to their catalog, I really dig this song.
"timeless" - that's their hook.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
the song is a allegory fo Christ.
Underrated percussion in this song esp the instrumental part. The use of cymbals is amazing.
The kind of music that makes your spirit soar
The middle chord progression starting at 1:51 is just haunting and beautiful. For me, it makes the whole song and I always look forward to it when I hear this song.
Yes!!
Bingo. Great ear.
I haven't heard this song in forever but I always remember that part
Agreed. They start cooking…
What's?? Español please
I adore this indie pop group, it's fabulous, the lyrics of their songs and music fascinate me.
Exelente tema de mii epoca , que estilo ran perfecto lo maeavilloso bello, larga vida al rockkkkk
the drummer is severely underappreciated i feel
interesting groove and tom works all around! it's not boring !
ikr!!
The drums are flawless! That drummer is tearing it up in this tune, wow!
I just can’t articulate how absolutely impactful this song has been to me. 10 out of 10.
I always listen to this band in the fall and winter. It just seems perfect for it.
I do too!
I can agree with that!
Although I've listened to this in a convertible on a warm summer day; nothing wrong with that.
S J I'm different, this song makes me think of swimming in the ocean.
yes
The Ocean Blue is one of my all-time favorite bands!!
Mine too !!!!
All the tracks on their debut album are superb! Love Ocean Blue! Most under-rated band ever.
Very Echo & Bunnymen sounding
Well it was 89 so I'm sure Echo was a strong influence. Both great bands! ✌️
That’s a good thing, man.Echo and The Bunnymen was a fantastic band,Ian McCulloch has some great solo stuff too.
Exactly
For Like 32 years I thought this was Echo, only learning who it really was by watching this video lol
I thought they sounded like Flock of Seagulls 😊😅
How dis this NOT blow up and get GIGANTIC?? The Ocean Blue shined so brightly for a very short 2 album life span. Many great tracks, but this just outshines everything...the guitar, guitar, guitar. Dammit, bring back the 90s NOW!
This was played a decent bit on MTV around '88/'89 and I loved it, but it was mining the earlier territory of the Smiths/EchoBunnymen, etc., and grunge was about to be heavily pushed by the music industry as you probably know. We can look back on this now and appreciate its awesome timelessness.
I liked/bought their first 4 albums. I think the 4th one was released around '96.
The 80’s and 90’s will always be a part of my existence. Two great music eras.
I like this drummer!😎
Agreed!!
This song has one of my most fave drum licks ever.
Yeah, I agree , it’s got a great flow to it,Pounding Bass, Haunting guitar,Great lyrics...drums..Keyboards.. well crafted song, well engineered.. everyone seems to be in the pocket!
That guitar makes this song so unique. Timeless.
A classic of that pivotal late 80s/early 90s sound. I remember this hit the airwaves not long after the Bunnymen broke up and the guitar riff, particularly the solo was just what us indie college kids needed to help us think of what Will Sergeant would be playing if the Bunnymen were still around. That is said as a compliment to this band. I cannot recall ever hearing a weak song from them. I read years ago that the lead singer became a lawyer after they disbanded. And this is EXACTLY how indie college kids looked around that time.
Love this song
Don’t think I could ever get tired of it
The guitar solo is epic and poetry in motion
Great band and wonderful examples of bowl cuts.
Dylan Roof was nicer back then. Such a shame :(
See also: Moe Howard.
Called weight line haircut....
I just heard this on Sunday night football as they went to commercial break. That was unexpected...
Must have been a game played in Pennsylvania.
Steelers or Eagles game if I remember!
Great guitar solo 2:16 --exactly how a guitar solo should go--as part of the song--not just some overplayed disruption of the music like so many are.
+Andy Martin "as part of the song" perfect. Thank You. :)
man good observation...
+Josue Cadena Echo and the Bunnymen
+Andy Martin Yes! I just took this song to Garage Band app and looped this guitar solo and extended it....awesome!
+ACERAMGAD cool
There's a certain beauty ,elegance and power that encapsulates this song. It's been 30+ years since this came out. Still holds up against anything currently released. This song, could be released now...and it would be huge. The guitar work is superb, the drumming is precise and strong. Also, the production of this song, is simply superb. An under appreciated gem.
The most British-sounding American band that there ever was!! These lads are AMAZING!!
I had this song on repeat on a 90 mile trip once.. made the time go by so quick! No better time to be alive
That break at 1:50 is gorgeous. Great, great song.
Saw them at Mississippi Nights (St. Louis) in 1990! They opened for The Mighty Lemon Drops and killed! They played their entire debut album and then showered the crowd with Hershey candy bars. What a fantastic sound. So clean but full. Every instrument is perfectly balanced--Schelzel's voice, the chiming guitar, the steady bass, the piano slipping in and out, and I love the cymbal bell work. Damn, so great to slip into this song again.
Wished I was there, I know the place
I saw them on that tour in Orlando at a club called Visage...
I was at that show too, it was excellent!
Oh my gosh,I remember The Mighty Lemon Drops,I forgot about them.
@@richardwynn6744I think there was also an eighties band called Visage
This entire album is magic!
It really is. It's perfection !!
Never heard this great track until today 6th Dec 2022...love it 😋😘
lucky you. Mercury by Ocean Blue is pretty good too.
@openyourheart5745: Where were you back in 1989? This was a new wave song that was heard on the radio in the Philippines back then.
@@Supersweetguy I think it just passed me by 🤔🙄🤔😂
Underrated band and they have great music!
Like Book of Love, this band was one of the best things to come out of Pennsylvania. Oddly, the PA band everyone seems to remember from the 80s is The Hooters who had the one hit "And We Danced". Tragic. Especially considering the numerous hits that Ocean Blue and Book of Love had all over the place on college radio. IF only the mainstream radio stations outside of PA had found these bands.... Regardless, we're all blessed now thanks to CZcams.
Shout out to 103.1 The Wave in Salt Lake City for continuing to play these kinds of bands every day. You guys at The Wave are awesome, especially Andrea and the guy behind Chet's Casettes!!
Seein em in August. Super psyched..id like to see Book.of Love too. And didnt the Hooters have a song called Second Wind?
Forget The Hooters. How about Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers. They were great !!!
Always loved the guitar solo on this song!
I would stay up late on Sunday nights, alone in my room and listen to real music and see real videos. Like this one from The Ocean Blue, Thank you 120 minutes. You were a product of a better, vanished age.
Indubitably! I agree.
💯 agree
I was watching Cowboys/ Eagles on Sunday Night Football and *this* song came on! I was like, that's The Ocean Blue! Now I got 'em on repeat on Spotify. Memories of college. Great memories. The boys from Hershey made some wonderful music. 👌🏽
What a strong Echo & The Bunnymen influence.
The good old days of the early 90s. 😎👍👍
In other songs, you may find guitar passages that are louder, softer, faster, slower, grittier, smoother, nicer, or nastier, but you may not find one that is sweeter in tone than this one, or more in keeping with the vibe of the song. This is near perfection.
God, what memories. Was listening to new music and heard this the very day I heard Toad The Wet Sprocket. That whole era was so distinct. The Sundays, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Church, The Cure. There was a mystery and a magic to the vibe that has not been duplicated. It was around this time that I discovered Acid House and Trance and I never looked back. But this was one of those last conventional bands I recall loving.
Thank you 120 minutes on MTV back in the late 80's The only way I would ever hear of this band. Now I have all of their music. One of the best underrated bands of all time.
SUCH a sorely under-rated group. Cerulean album got me through so many difficult nights.
Ocean Blue, equipo extraordinario!!
Love me some Ocean Blue!💙
My brother and I had a cd of self-titled and cerulean that we listened to every night and to this day are still two of the most nostalgic things to me.
One of my all time favorite 80’s songs.
90s
@@itwaslikethatwhenigothere1194 1989
This type of music is typically off my radar but I really dig this ....
I was listening to my Joe Jackson Pandora station and this lost gem popped up, The striking of the cymbal's bell is the sound that made me fall in love
with the song.
One of the best songs and music video ever invented!! I don’t understand why The Ocean blue is so underrated they were actually pioneers of a new music style in the 90’s in fact they inaugurated the 90’s decade of music by introducing 90’s new wave rock style!
This is the song that made me fall in love with them back in High School. Got to see them on the 1990 Laughter Tour with the Mighty Lemon Drops. This still sounds great today.
Good call Julie, saw that same tour at the Warfield in San Francisco. Forgot about the Mighty Lemon Drops.
I still have my concert T's for both bands.
saw them in Pensacola they threw chocolate kisses they is from Hershey Pa,
Yep, I was at one of those shows from that tour in El Paso. That was when I met Bobby behind the club they were playing at.
Oh gosh, yeah. Saw them & The Mighty Lemon Drops in Portland at La Luna....i was 16. Nostalgia is a beautiful heartbreak
Nearly 30 years after picking this album up on a whim, I still come back to it every few weeks.
Saw them live back in the day. Really good band. They threw Hershey kisses into the audience.
Georgia Rose now days they don’t throw shiiiiz, for example justin Bieber would probably flip you of or some but never a Hershey’s kiss
They’re from Hershey PA :)
OH sweet YOUTH! And David's HAIR.... incredible! Not to mention the incredible music, of course...
Severely underrated.
Recuerdos bailando en Bauhaus de Miraflores en 2003,2004, especialmente los miércoles. Aunque al día siguiente había que trabajar y estudiar, igual lo importante era bailar la música que realmente te gusta. El tiempo vuela...
A simply stunning underrated and undiscovered gem. Amazing vocals and guitar. Why oh why isn’t this brilliant song available on iTunes ?
The whole album has great songs you will listen to over and over - "Just Let Me Know" and "Circus Animals" and "Awaking to a Dream."
I can never get tired of this band or song...... Underrated, one of best songs I've ever heard. Guitar solo is epic
Guitar reminds me of echo and the bunnymens stuff
Damn. This brings back memories of watching this video all the time on "Post-Modern MTV" back in '89.
Beautiful song that I love from late 80's. The guitar talent, as well as the awesome drum not to mention the lead singer's singing. Nowadays, sadly, they don't make high quality songs and perfect music like they used to.
Been loving this song for what 30 years now and always thought of them as a UK band and tonight I find out they were from Hershey, Pennsylvania.
You really do learn something new every day.
That echo and the bunnymen guitar solo 👍👍
My beauty?😚.... perfection
just heard of these guys now. i'm 58 and this is criminal. their sound is so clean and refreshing. wow.
Greatest song of all time? Guitar solo is amazing, can listen to this all day. Romantic at heart
Thank you, 1st Wave, for bringing this song and band back into my life!
For me remember The Railways Children, One band of '80 years!
Late 80's gem... It's hard to believe these guys are from the US and not from the UK...
They seem like they would be British they kinda remind me of new order who are British
That's what I thought, they sound a bit like a Madchester band...
*****
Hershey, PA:) Sweet chocolate melodies!
***** Hershey Pa.
Leonardo Mello i know!!! 20+ years and i thought they were Brit boys.
This takes me back to when I was a preteen/teenager and I didn't know about gothic music,at least it wasn't defined, and music like this fit in between being indie, moody, just esoteric
If I had My own Coffee Shop in Chicago, I'd play all these songs and just reminisce.
One of my favorite all time bands. I saw them on the Cerulean tour and also the last 3 years including last year when they played their 1st 2 albums in their entirety
Jay G Lucky !!!
Appreciated every note and lyric for years. You flow like no other band. Authentic, yet memorable. Ocean Blue, I hope you guys are somehow still friends and able to pass on you talents to a younger generation in need of your magic. Much respect and love. JJS
AMAZING! Just AMAZING! I grew up in the PERFECT ERA!
The Ocean Blue and The Mighty Lemon Drops....VA Beach......AWESOME
Amazing song, amazing band! I want a time machine! Best mid to early 90s best time of my youth and the alt rock scene was major part of it!
tuve el placer de verlos en vivo
The tone on the telecaster guitar is just so very intoxicating!!
my cool older sister had the ocean blue cassette tape and I would hide it from her and listen to it in my headphones on my bmx bike, I remember it was summer and I was starting to yearn for something more, something romantic, something I could sense but was too young to understand. It was the essence of cool and the feelings of melancholy as the summer was winding down, chasing all the fun, searching for that one true love
Please check out the entire album of you can. There are a number of good songs on it: "Vanity Fair," "Drifting, Falling,"
"Ask Me, Jon," and "The Office Of A Busy Man." Nice stuff. I have "The Ocean Blue" only on audio cassette, but still listen to it.

I don't know all their songs but of the ones I do know Drifting & Falling is my favorite
Just saw them Sunday. Still an awesome band and their new stuff is great too!
Love that 80s sound ! The time machine I built can only go back to the 80s.
This is 90s music.
Thee Greatest Song of it’s Time! Thanks Ocean Blue
This is another one of my happy sad songs...
I love to dance to this, with tears in my eyes haha! 😎🖤😀
The last crest of the New Wave.
The last hurrah of the New Wave Scene was in 1990, with the song pure by the lightning seeds, and getting away with it from electronic.
Yes, before that horrible grunge took over.
Omar Gonzalez not all grunge was horrible
i thank the Switzerland radio Couleur 3: thanks to this radio i was able to buy the lp. A grat record. In 1989.

I don't know about you guys but when I hear guitar tones like these I get very nostalgic for better times.....ringing guitars take me to another place. U2 and The Edge changed my world when I first heard them.
Just after 2mins in, for about a minute, just music and no lyrics, I could happily listen to that on a loop.
Love this song so much ! There was a college band at Penn state called the Dirges that we used to go see a lot when the ocean blue was big. I used to shoot these lyrics as I can’t sing and one of the lead singers told me after the show he sometimes got nervous when I was there singing this song because I would if he missed a lyric 😂😂😂
But they are on there way to being bigger than ever so ….. 🎸🤘!!!
