This is the anthem of Liverpool FC, one of the biggest football clubs in the world. Took on new meaning after the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989, where 96 fans were killed by a human crush, and it became something of a rallying song. Still sung before every Liverpool game. I’m not a Liverpool fan, but it’s one of the great sights in sport seeing 50,000 fans belt this out

Gerry & The Pacemakers were contemporaries of The Beatles in Liverpool and had the same manager, Brian Epstein. Their first three record releases all went to No.1, a feat which no other group achieved until Frankie Goes To Hollywood (also from Liverpool) in the 1980s. "You'll Never Walk Alone" was released in 1963. At the time hit records were played before the kick-off at the matches of Liverpool Football Club and the crowd would sing along. YNWA was so popular that the crowd continued to sing it even after it had fallen out of the charts and the record became the anthem of LFC. It's been sung ever since before every match at Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC. The song was originally from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. It's been re-released several times and the version you are watching is the original vocal with a modern video of Liverpool fans, young and old, singing along.

      It was horrific
I lived on Wadsley lane at the time (lifelong Wednesday fan) and was working for SWFC stationed on the leppings lane end on the day,
I had to abandon my position (I wasn't a steward) around 2.30 and observed from the road over the don until gate C was opened for the final time and it became too uncomfortable facing against the flow of fans so I left the street,
I know the ground like my own home so I just assumed the internal central pens had been shut off as the external gate was opened and remained open,
I knew what would happen if not,
Sadly that wasn't the case because an incompetent was in charge,
Then obviously some of us locals did whatever we could afterwards to help.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the protagonist Julie Jordan, sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, falls on his knife and dies after a failed robbery attempt. It is reprised in the final scene to encourage a graduation class of which Louise (Billy and Julie's daughter) is a member. The now invisible Billy, who has been granted the chance to return to Earth for one day in order to redeem himself, watches the ceremony and is able to silently motivate the unhappy Louise to join in the song.
The song is also sung at association football clubs around the world, where it is performed by a massed chorus of supporters on match day; this tradition developed at Liverpool F.C. after the chart success of the 1963 single of the song by the local Liverpool group Gerry and the Pacemakers. In some areas of the UK and Europe, "You'll Never Walk Alone" became the anthem of support for medical staff, first responders, and those in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.[

Gerry and the Pacemakers were an English beat group prominent in the 1960s Merseybeat scene. In common with the Beatles, they came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, and were recorded by George Martin.
They are most remembered for being the first act to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart with their first three single releases: "How Do You Do It?", "I Like It" and "You'll Never Walk Alone"] This record was not equalled for 20 years, until the mid-1980s success of fellow Liverpool band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Another of their most famous songs, "Ferry Cross the Mersey", refers to the River Mersey that flows past Liverpool.

You are a wonderful human being and this song is really an anthem for Liverpool (the city) and the football club because alot tragedies happened. 96 people died in a football match because of mistakes by the police and others. This song is played before every match that Liverpool plays (Klopp is the manager, maybe you heard of him). It's really a song about hope and that you can overcome everything. It means alot! Liverpool FC is with Manchester United the biggest club in england (maybe even bigger now). They won the league after 30 years of waiting this year. There is a video of all their moments in this season with THAT song over it. Wonderful! Give if a watch if you want!
