Compare Period Over Period Breakdown in Power BI Using the Waterfall Chart

The Waterfall chart is a good visualization to show you changes on value over a sequence, The sequence can be time, or date or workflow steps, etc. There is also an ability in this chart that may not be visible to everyone, and that is the breakdown option of this chart. You can use the chart without the breakdown option, However, if you use this option, it gives you fantastic ability to compare values on a period over period basis. You don't even need to write DAX measures for a year over year or a month over month, this chart, gives you that easily. Let's see how this works.

Hi Reza! Thanks for putting out such a great video. I understand that we are comparing YoY Sales values of different categories. But, I didn't really understand what's the actionable insight. Or what's the action/steps that an analyst would recommend after seeing this graph?

Really cool Reza! thanks for sharing, I have a waterfall chart depicting YOY variation from a dataset FY 2010 until 2015, ************FY goes thru Oct-Sept******, however the last FY 2015 covering CY data (Oct14-Dec14; first Q of FY2015) is being compared with the whole FY 2014 in the visual. Is there a trick to reflect the variation just for the Q but keep the visual for the year?, In other words variation from FY 2015 vs FY 2014, but only for the 3 months unfolded of FY 2015 vs the 3 months of the prior FY 2014, keeping the visual as for FY variation and not for Quarter(Q)? thx for any feedback

Very interesting Reza! Thank you. Do you know if it is posible to modify the word "Total" that you have in waterfall chart for the last column? For example if I have one column for Incomes, other for different kind of expenses, and at the end I want to see the last column with the name "Cash Flow" instead of "Total". I am unable to do it.

Unfortunately not yet, if you use the chart without Breakdown, there will be always a Total. Hopefully there will be an option later on.
