  • If you already know how to create the relevant measures that you want to incorporate into your sales waterfall chart in Power BI .... then feel free to skip through the timeline to Step 5 13:44.
If you are not sure how to create relevant measures, to calculate Price, Volume and Mix impact, then I'd recommend watching from the very beginning of this Power BI video tutorial.
In this Power BI video tutorial, I will step you through how to create a sales waterfall chart that explains sales movement by Price, Volume and Mix. This is a conventional way of explaining sales movement, which is frequently asked in the work place.
I will explain the basic concept of Price, Volume and Mix used in the Sales Waterfall Chart, so that you can grasp the basic concept, before deep diving into creation of the measures, etc.
There are 5 steps required to create waterfall chart in Power BI using measures.
Step 1 - Create the basic measures
Step 2 - Define the key drivers in Period 1 and Period 2
Step 3 - Calculate total sales whilst changing key drivers
Step 4 - Calculate sales change impact for each key drivers change
Step 5 - Creation of the Sales Waterfall using measures created in Step 1 - Step 5.
Feel free to use the timeline to skip through to Step 5 13:44 to jump straight through to How to create waterfall chart using Measures instead of Dimensions, if you already know how to create the measures that you need for inclusion in the Sales Waterfall.
I will be publishing the Power BI report (pbix) working file in my website LighthouseAnalytix.com
I sincerely hope that after watching this video, you will be more confident in creating Power BI Sales Waterfall Chart using Measures, and will be able to put it into practice in your next Power BI report.
If you are interested in creating Power BI Sales Waterfall Chart using Dimension instead of Measures, then please watch my other CZcams videos.

I wish microsoft would include the "Simple Waterfall" visualization as an option in their standard waterfall visualization... but this was EXACTLY what I needed. THANK YOU!!!

    Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou,
This is exactly what i needed, I've been banging my head on trying to create a waterfall chart for so long now, where default waterfall charts and other visual weren't giving me my desired output mainly due to my employers nuance with there products and MRR data but also some limitations within the standard waterfall chart.
this is perfect, 90% of the time keeping it simple is the best answer, thankyou.

Very useful tutorial, thank you. Is there a way to sort the measures appearing in the chart e.g. after the Start column, then Volume then Price and then Mix?

Excellent and very innovative. Thank you very much for the video. Waiting for more videos! Just one doubt, I do not see the "Define Pillar" option in my power BI. How do I get it?

    Hi Isabella!
Very nice tutorial thanks for sharing it!
But theres is one thing that I still cant comprehend. If you select Product C and do the PVM Analysis between the years 2021-2023 the volume effect is 1.1K but the quantity its the same for each year. Shouldnt the volume effect be zero in this case?

Hello, great video. One question, i have products that have solde in the past, but not in the current year, and vice-versa. When I calculate the P1mix, price and revenue, and the P2mix, price and revenue, those products that appear on one year show the wrong data. Those are showing the same data for the year with zero sales, as the year with sales. It should show blank values in the Period drivers chart for years without sales. Do you know how to fix that? thanks

same issue is there any solution in the formula related to P1mix, p1price, p1total unit that solve the issue? @olcan did you find any alternative?
