Living in a poor country gives you the skill of being a minimalist. I don't buy extra stuff (I can't afford it). I repair the stuff that gets broken, I don't buy new stuff until they are absolutely worn out or totally destroyed. I don't use the credit card unless it is an emergency. I don't have a mortgage. I own a small house that took me ten years to build. I'm debt free. I don't wish to have more stuff than I already own (I have the absolute essential things and nothing more). I guess I'm a forced minimalist. But that's okey. I'm happy.

Americans are materially wealthy but spiritually poor.
The American economy is built upon mindless consumption. During the Covid lockdown politicians said on TV that it's okay to sacrifice your grandma and grandpa in order to keep the economy running. If they died from Covid it's ok. The way out of this madness is through shows like this. Many Americans live unfulfilled lives because they've been lied to about what's really important. Material goods will not bring you inner peace and love.

I totally agree! I grew up in poverty and as much as it is difficult, it made me resourceful as hell! Reducing and reusing, DIY, and ultimately letting go of the need for more and more. It's important to evaluate what is truly essential vs what just complicates and clutters life.

Don’t let your possessions possess you!
I owned a boat and a bicycle. I loved the bike and I liked the boat. The boat took all my time, cleaning, maintaining, repairing, some relaxing. I never had time for my bike. Then a hurricane destroyed my boat and the insurance company robbed me. What a relief now I have time to ride my bike to the ocean. Joy!

Minimalism is freedom. It’s not just clothes, it’s everything we consume. Delete all unread emails, unsubscribe from all junk email lists, block any numbers of spam calls and people you wish not to hear from, unsubscribe from news, unsubscribe from water cooler gossip at work, unsubscribe from draining friends and even family members, sell any possessions that don’t bring you joy. I reduced my closet by 75% it’s a gratifying feeling walking into a clutter free closet of clothing that only brings you joy.

Another great podcast with some really good content. The only point for me was that when one of the guys discussed how "sad" it was that because he was getting rid of some of his belongings and getting things in order, his boss had asked if he was ok and if he was planning on taking his own life. In my opinion, this is far from sad...it is very observant and a real positive that a boss had the presence of mind to notice these changes and ask that question, which for many people goes unnoticed and is still found to be a difficult conversation. I am clearly an advocate for reducing the stigma and raising awareness around mental health and for me, this should be highlighted as good practice....well done that boss!

The main takeaway is "I worked so hard to buy things that should make me happy, and they aren't doing their job."

When I started playing chess - it was just a game. But I began to see other areas of my life that I could apply the skills of chess - the anticipation of reaction to my action.
Minimalism was initially a tool of decluttering possessions - but - like chess - it led to a profound impact on how I viewed the world.
It forced me to look at how I valued 'physical things' initially - but that gave way to thinking about how I came to determine value. It has touched virtually every part of my life now.

Just a thought. I enjoyed this and listened to the podcast rather than here. The advert/promotion midway through was for Whoop. To me this bit of tech sits in direct conflict or contradiction to the core message of the podcast and the minimalist stance. OK I know this podcast doesn't pay for its self but I personally feel you cheapen the message when you cut from a chat about getting rid of the 'stuff' in out lives to an advert for exactly more stuff. I run, swim, cycle, eat healthy and by far the best way of understanding your body is to listen to your body, not listening to an algorithm attached to your wrist.
Having said all that I still enjoyed the podcast. Keep up the good work, oh, and one final thing - can you guys in California please stop complaining if it's a tiny bit colder than normal. I live in Scotland and everything I do is in the cold (proper cold), what I wouldn't give for a day or two of Californian bad weather!

Rewatching this and the comment about minimalism NOT giving your life meaning-that minimalism just gives you room for what does give your life meaning? I wonder if that's the biggest hindrance in trying/adapting minimalism. If you don't know what gives your life meaning, then more room in your life can actually feel more painful.

So sad to see how cynical some of these comments are. It doesn’t follow that you can’t make money or monetize your efforts without compromising your message. Rubbish.
The message isn’t prescriptive on how you should live but asked the foundational question of why? Why so much stuff? Why clutter the mind and physical space? Watching one episode of Hoarders ought to show clearly how pathological society has become in it’s materialism and consumerism.
There is great freedom in simplicity and it need not also be an exercise in poverty to be legit.

    • @BereniceWeber
      @BereniceWeber Před 3 lety +1

I agree with you! I really appreciate the Minimalists message, and I am sadden to see Rich Rolls followers being so critical :( you'd think that in this space people would be kinder... and of course the Minimalists have to make money and work like all of us, a second film, a second book, etc. Embrace the message and if people don't like it, instead of posting mean comments, they can watch another video.

    • @dbo4506

The vast majority of comments are very positive. Stop focusing on the small amount of negativity and overlooking the overwhelming positive. Also referencing such an extremist niche minority like hoarders as a reference to society shows the lack of strength in your point of view. It is sad that you felt the need to voice your negativity.
