    This is a relic done right. It doesn't look like you just bashed a new guitar, you built it from the ground up with a theme, and it came out absolutely beautifully

    Very smart to weigh the guitar, when the difference from one day to the next gets relatively small you know you've got all the moisture out that you can. I like the way you added a lot of personal touches, definitely inspires me to do something like this on my own.

    This gave me an idea for a jazzmaster that I'm building... I was paralyzed from the neck down 14 years ago and I've almost got everything back. If it would have cracked at anytime it would be right in line with crimson’s videos. Some of the cracks they bind together are unreal! The one thing I would have changed on the beer-caster is the tuning machines. Banjo tuners would look cool. Thanks phill. That was fun

  • @SeanKerns
    @SeanKerns Před 5 lety

    That came out great. Very "rustic". I did a similar finish accidentally on an ash Tele body. I didn't seal it at all, and painted it black. I wanted to keep the texture of the grain under the paint. I decided I didn't like the black, so I started sanding it down to repaint it. I got to a point where there was just paint in the lower parts of the grain, and said, "Hey, I like that!"

    The most inspirational build I've seen in years! Thanks, Phil. I gave a similar treatment to a vintage double-bit axe and my favorite hammer handle a few years back. I can see that I have more torch work in my future. The only thing I might do differently is to add a layer of black, and then red, milk paint and then sand through to the scorch lines. Ooooo... Cheers!

    Relic / theme guitars seem to be a touchy subject, but I love what you did with this! Since you mentioned not wanting to use chemicals, I just wanted to share this.. "What should you not mix with hydrogen peroxide? Don't mix it with vinegar. Mixing hydrogen peroxide with vinegar creates peracetic acid, a corrosive acid that can harm the skin, eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. While it's okay to use the two in succession on a surface, don't ever mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in the same bottle"... Mixing still perhaps far safer in compassion to the stuff others are using to age parts, but sounds like using separately might be the safest way to go.
    Well done on the build.. Cheers!

    I wish I could give this 1000 likes. Easily one of the coolest videos on the interweb of things. I love the other sharpen my axe videos as well, but this one was especially cool because you let your skills as a luthier be paired with creativity that you don't always see with folks who are building or modding instruments. This is like a super hot rod version of what a tele can be made into. The aesthetic choices were very cool and showed that you can really think in many dimensions when it comes to building custom instruments. I was blown away. Thank you so much for what you do!

      I'd always figured a Chinese guitar was good for something like this - you might destroy it and need a piece of scrap to work on so you don't agonize over a mistake. I didn't know about this company, but figured Warmoth blanks would be the step up for home construction.

    Building a guitar is a great experience. Mine turned out awesome, and it is by far my favourite . I expected it to be an unplayable wall hanging piece of crap, ( that’s how much faith I had in a DIY kit, but I wanted to try) Setting it up after build, only 2 strings were out of intonation. I have a brand new Strat, ordered straight from factory, ( beautiful, tobacco burst flame maple ). It came with a bowed neck, and the saddle was sticking out 1/2 “ from body to bottom of saddle. I couldn’t intonate it, ( had to cut the spring on the bottom E to intonate). Anyway got Strat straight, but wasn’t happy about paying $1000.00 for an instrument that needed another $ 200.00 to make it right , ( which it would have cost , if I didn’t know how to set it up).
    Anyway, owned a lot of guitars, Gibson, Fender, BC Rich, etc, my LP, build plays the best.

    I had an old copy Tele like the ones they sold at every mall organ and piano store in the 80s that I stripped. I dyed the body with Fiebings then got some el cheapo violin varnish and varnished it, then lit it on fire and put it out with water. I then scraped it back and revarnished it. It took a long time for the varnish to dry out completely but when it did boy did it look cool. Sadly, I gave the guitar away to a "friend" who turned out to be a fink. It actually played very well but the diecast clunky tuners didn't hold tune that well and the pickups were low output, not what I wanted but now it would be great for pedals. You live and you learn I guess.

    I’ve seen every sharpen my and all are great. This one though, I would kill for that ax. The tone just does something to me, versatile.

    Whoa! It looks really cool. I love the fact how you spent so much time sanding it down, and then proceeded to beat it with a heavy-ass chain. Cheers from Sweden!

    The vinegar concoction you make is about 2 steps away from ferric chloride. Add steel wool, and a bit of electricity and you have the good stuff.
