She called attention to violence without being violent herself, and when millions of eyes were watching. And she stood her ground until she had a breakdown and was subsequently proven right that she wasn't alone. Now I'm not a Christian but I respect the *hell* out of someone who can do that and speak to tensions between faith and the institutions that purport to be its sole source, not to mention the long conspiracy of silence. Few people can say they've done the same. And at the end of the day, no amount of bickering over labels will appreciably change the value of doing the right thing.

If you look back at interviews, she has been so solid, never changed, always a fighter, always telling her truth (which is pretty damn bright) and I wish her traumas of youth didn't mess with her brain chemistry and make her suffer. I totally agree. I was brought up Catholic, but I cannot abide by anti-abortion rules that came from an all male entity. I also do not believe in confession to a human. I think everyone can have a relationship with a higher power and speak directly to God. I believe confession was established in the extremely early days in the religion, and primarily to accrue information to use as blackmail if need (much like Scientology). Confession should be removed from Catholic Church doctrine.

It's interesting that people can't see the difference between religion and God. Also, Catholic means universal, so that may help some of you understand Sinead a little better. The things she said are true and not contradictory, but the constructs of religion that most have been raised with don't allow you to think on your own. What she's saying is very easy to understand. It's strange that so many people are confused by her statements.

She is so right.. I always thought religion and God were one and the same but she is correct. Religion has caused so much damage in many ways but God is about love. You don’t need to worship others. You can speak directly to the spirit you feel is there. I’ve always spoke to that spirit when I was lost. I love Sinéad and her music. I wish she was still here, such a beautiful human being. I consider myself an atheist as i do not believe in any god/s or deity/s however i like Sinead O'conner's view on this. You do not need churches and buildings, and popes, bishops, priests, etc.. There's this whole system and hierarchy with fancy labels and authoritarian positions, but at the end of the day, the belief in god is a personal belief, and if people so choose they can pray in their minds and hearts, regardless of where or with whom they pray.
Religion is a business. It is a money machine, and a power structure. It is filled with corruption and perversion, and serves no god. It was pretty obvious how the guy interviewing her wanted to shut her down, and shut her up as quick as possible, before people actually realize she is right, and that god is in your heart, not your fancy building structures.
The more people realize that popes and priests hold no power or privilege in the spiritual realm, the more they will lose power in this world. All the money and influence put into churches and church leaders...if the people saw how unnecessary it was, they would stop feeding the money machine aka religion. So while i don't believe in god, i have nothing against the hypothetical concept of a god, it is simply religion i want to see gone.
Religion has caused this world more damage and hurt than anything else. and while i don't know if god and religion will ever be separated, i hope it is, as the more people keep god in their hearts, and private belief, without supporting the corruption of religion the better off we will all be as a result. There should be no religious leaders, and no power or money in faith. It should simply be a belief, not a system.

That's a pretty shallow portrayal of God! If our only purpose in life is to worship a deity then that deity must have some serious self esteem issues. Surely s far more productive use of one's life is to develop one's self spiritual and to helo your fellow man?
I've gone through my life with the exact same views as her in relations to faith and until today I never knew anyone shared the same views as me. If anyone would like to discuss this I would be thrilled

She's read and heeded John 14:6, the same way every priest should have. If they did, they would know that she is right and merely quoting the very words of Jesus himself. Jesus said that He is the only one who can lead a person to God, the Father. The Roman Catholic Church, with their traditions and their installment of a Pope clearly contradicts Jesus' own words. You must know God through Jesus, not through a Pope or anyone else who claims to be his earthy "go-to" . The person or organization that claims to be that alternate route is a blasphemer.

The Catholic church should be denounced point blank, claiming to be a catholic priest when never ordained is crazy and not a title any rational woman would want anyway, especially if one is Irish.
I have read one too many tales of how Ireland was subjugated by Catholicism into bronze age superstition and outright enslavement, not to mention the psychological damage inflicted on children with the mea culpa ( I'm guilty ) mentality.

The hypocrisy of fat priest's in their pompous dressy garb taking from the poorest of the poor to perpetrate more religious oppression in similarly impoverished nations is grotesque and immoral, especially as they fattened their flanks at the banquet halls of the rich while simultaneously imaging themselves pious to tread the thresholds of the homes of the poor, even if it were just a case of narcissistic supply for their own egos and a way of maintaining and indeed intimidating their flock into obedience.
If all that wasn't bad enough there is the child abuse by both nuns and priests. The offences are in such prolific numbers that it has to suggest by rational thought that there is something at play to cause this degree of dysfunction. I think it most likely due to the perversion and denying of natural human affections and desires which causes these traits. For women to become callous and indifferent to suffering is unusual, especially to the point of sadistic whippings of orphaned or abandoned children in their care, sadly it is true that the Bible can be translated to fit into many boxes and the scripture "spare the rod corrupt the child" is just one of many endorsements of beatings that the bronze age illiterate goat herders of the middle east wrote which helped to endorse these perversions. With the men it is the sexual frustration that appears to be a problem, both are devoid of natural tactile human relationships and that is possibly why these repressed people have less empathy. It doesn't help matters with the unloved children with the likes of Mother Theresa. (a hero of the church) who actively forbade contraception.
It has been shown time and again that deprivation can be almost eliminated if one can help the woman to be free from the animal like birth cycles these ancient people taught. One after another until menopause whilst in poverty increases suffering in every direction, not only does the empowerment of women over their reproductive systems reduce poverty it also significantly improves health .
Mother Theresa was just another puppet for the medieval dogmas of Catholicism, she also believed that suffering and pain were a high calling! She revelled in suffering and it is utterly immoral that she used all of the millions donated to fund nunneries instead of providing proper medical care for her home for the dying in Calcutta.
This woman had a make shift hospital ( nothing more than a room with camp beds and pots to defecate in) where the same unsterilised needles were being shared amongst patients , no proper beds or toilets and the tiny cots were feet apart from each other meaning MASSIVE over crowding,
This brute bought not one bit of medicine or machinery, not even beds for these poor dying victims, that the donations were meant to be for this in the first place, yet nobody would think to question the holier than thou and who would think her capable of such neglect of care while depositing millions in vatican banks?
Mother Theresa also benefited from the theft from the poor to fund these eloquent convents which bore her name, many world leaders and vile dictators contributed to her cause after robbing it from their own subjects, nothing collected was for those dying people in appalling circumstances which she so fervently campaigned for money for, or so we thought. Who would question a nun, everywhere was broadcast her patients in Calcutta but noone thought to ask what the donations were for, it was only natural to expect this . NOT HER. it makes me angry to think people can be given such holy authority by taking a religious title when they dont even have the same capacity to empathise as the majority non religious would.
Her sainthood is just a further mark of hypocrisy to show the Catholic Church for what it really is. This scam has worked well for years, who would think a nun could be so evil?
These sexually and emotionally frustrated clergy were as damaged as the people they helped enslave, what O Connor was thinking of in wanting to identify with them I do not know,
Really Sinead, I thought you had the Catholic Church sussed out for its wickedness, it is disappointing to see that you still associate spirituality or honour with their man made titles.
If anyone is in anyway disgraced it is that organisation, it is the furthest thing I can imagine from true holiness or the compassion of Christ.
