Think about this for a moment: what would the world for deaf people look like if we were all taught sign language in school vs learning cursive writing.
NYC Entrepreneur honestly, I think we should.
(As someone who had selective mutism for a while, communicating wasn’t exactly the easiest. So cursive is less useful in my opinion. Since I’m business you probably get more deaf people then people who expect perfect hand writing)
NYC Entrepreneur this is honestly such a good idea! I would’ve loved to learn sign language when I was little!!
My elementary school taught us how to sign the alphabet in ASL. It's never been in much use, but I've never forgotten how to sign them because I learned it at a young age! Whenever I need to communicate with Deaf people or signers, the alphabet takes a while, but it works :)
I think ASL should be taught through elementary or middle school at least as an elective course. I would have loved to learn more about it when I was a child.
well ik both so... how would that play? lol
I don’t know sign language, but i’d like to try it

Here’s an advantage to being deaf: you can’t hear snoring while trying to sleep :) (Just trying to brighten your day a bit)
Oh yeah!
when i snored the other night the people in my house said they could feel the shaking XD i didnt know i snored that loud!!!
I need to find me a deaf husband ASAP! Love the positivity, Marley!!!!
I once started snoring so loud I woke myself up. And it'd be pretty cool if I could absolutely not hear anything while sleeping, or at least before I fall asleep, because even the tiniest sounds make it hard for me to fall asleep and that's annoying.
Of course, I'm not trying to romanticize being deaf either! Being able to hear is a bliss and i don't know what I'd do if I couldn't listen to music or hear my mom's voice anymore or ever again!! So yeah, being deaf is definitely not something to dream of, but there's still good sides to anything, and I wanted to point them out in an attempt to make deaf people feel better.
I can't sleep without listening to classical music.
I love it when I got to hear his voice a little when he said "like that" when gesturing her 🙂

Me too. It was cute.
I can hear it at like a low whisper level all the time.

In my ASL class we don’t voice so it was weird to hear people after class etc

I'm sure You've thought of this already and I'm obviously late to the show here, but my Military husband is up at unholy hours AND I HATE LIGHT TOO, and so the way we have worked around that is a RED LIGHTBULB! Red light does not travel through your eyelids unless you're right up in there because it has the longest wavelength and, therefore, the least amount of energy in the visible spectrum. SO, we have a light he can turn on that is red and it won't wake me up and if I open my eyes there is no glare or squint-inducing light, but he can move around to get ready for work! Hope that was helpful! :)

This was fun, enjoyable and cute to watch. Always wanted to learn sign language. Me and a friend learned a little in elementary just for fun when we would go to the library.

aww 🥺 I just realized how much I want more people like these two in Earth, like they are so generous and humble, it makes me cry seeing such a cute and awesome couple.. keep up the good work guys ! I love your videos already even thought I’m still new :)
2 questions for Ellen:
1) Is it strange to have arguments in silence? I guess you’re probably used to it by now but I think that must be so strange as a hearing person
2) Does your house feel very silent because Ryan prefers not to us his voice? If so, do you like to have music or some background noise just to make it less silent for you?
Really love your videos by the way I really like how you both answer questions so open and honestly thank you both !
Ryan is a very calm person as per the other videos. So imo their arguments would be a lot less aggressive so even though silent arguments may seem alien to us it wouldn't be all that different to them cause as you said one would become accustomed to it.
@scftlcve it's all fun and games watching the deaf kids argue until they start making shadow clones.
@scftlcve Why your comment reminds me of orchestral conductors? XD
@scftlcve No, that's not what I mean. Orchestral musicians and conductors communicate using gestures during performances! Fast passages, musicians follow conductor's lead!

It’s been a real hands-on experience.
Got a laugh from my prof when he asked if I was deaf. I said “I’m not deaf, but sometimes I just choose not to listen”
😂
"hands-on" love the double meaning. Also, I have something similar to you, except I don't choose not to listen. Sometimes the brain just doesn't comprehend speech as words, just any other sound. I know that someone is saying something, I just don't know what lol. Or I hear bits of what they are saying and try to fill in the gaps; sometimes what I think I hear is actually ridiculous which is how I know that's probably not what they actually said.

Caroline B oh okay
@@carolineb829 I find that strange because that is like you are looking at them but ignoring what they have to say. I can see how it works if you are very good with the sign language they are using to an extant, but those of us that know very little
OmniscientWarrior well facial expressions play a huge part in signing. Think about verbal communication. Facial expressions are sometimes more meaningful than the words they speak. In ASL it’s the same. The expression helps convey the tone. Also you don’t usually stare at people’s lips when they talk unless you can’t hear them. Same with asl.
Neither does he.

Ryan talking about what sleeping in the dark is like for a deaf person was so interesting. Never thought about that before, totally made me see things differently!
Omg I was going to comment that
I'm a hearing person but I feel the same way as he does it nice to see that we have that similarity
I felt exactly what he meant like how terrifying it is not to hear anything and because you are sleeping you cannot know what is happening around you... So so so horrifying :(
@@Someone-tk7zh I actually had that anxiety growing up because I'm hard of hearing, meaning I'm slightly deaf in my hearing. I'm around half deaf in both ears since I was born and I slept with night lights all the time, even today in my 20's I still sleep with light on sometimes. I didn't understand why I hated the dark, but I do know I feared losing both my hearing and my eye sight as I grow older. I'm Asian and have glasses, so me worried about my eye sight, and hearing and my health, you can imagine the fear and worries I have. just imagine losing one sense you rely on so much, mine is sight and I'd be devastated to lose that too.
@@chanamita oh man... I am so sorry to read all of the troubles you have... I don't know if it helps but I hope you are going to be Ok and I hope you never lose anything else... God bless you and people like you... I hope you can get better

Three things -
1. You can tell the chemistry is amazing between you two!
2. I found this video by searching for videos to learn sign.
3. This video was published on my birthday.
Bonus thing - I think I might try to learn ASL now.
When I did a little bit of research a while back, I discovered there's a phobia of the dark. I cannot remember the name, but I remember reading how most people who have the phobia are deaf. This was actually reassuring for me, because I am deaf and all of my life, I have had this intense fear of the dark. I grew up being taught that only little children are scared of the dark and everyone grows out of it. I felt like something was wrong with me, as here I am an adult, and I still sleep with a light on. But after learning this and growing into my deaf identity, it does not bother me anymore, and I have learned why I am scared of the dark. Like Ryan explained, deaf people rely on their eyes and not their ears. We already don't have one sense. Taking away another is terrifying. I never go anywhere after dark, and always try to get home before the sun goes down. I am the world's heaviest sleeper, as having slept through tornados and a drunk person going through the yard and taking out a tree and fence, yet if the light gets turned off, I wake up immediately and go into a panic when I cannot see anything. I use the salt lamps with the adjustable light setting, so I have a nice low red glow in my room when I sleep. Funny thing is, my dog is scared of the dark too, so we both sleep with a light on.
I'm glad you're getting more comfortable in your own skin, your Deaf identity. Reddish, yellowish light (rather than blue light) is the right choice to not disturb your circadian clock too much. Keep well!
This is a beautiful relationship but I can’t imagine how sassy she must get with the sign language when they are arguing

If I remember right, they did a video on that topic. I can imagine she's a pretty understanding person, given the circumstances of their relationship, so their arguments probably don't get too hostile.
Tom Hardy's Grandfather you just sign real fast and you see lots of facial expressions, expressing anger and frustration. Lots of rolling of eyes.. at least I do that LOL
I’ve seen it at a party once.. their hand gestures become more harsh, their faces express their emotions and well in this case, they got into an actual physical fight. So although they don’t say anything, their body language says it all.
I remember a story I read about how a deaf couple was arguing and they started laughing hysterically because one of them signed "Don't scream at me!".

Lola Santiago I think it’s even cooler that even though he can read her lips and know what she’s saying she still signs for him. That’s freakin goals
@@kyle3045 Because reading lips can sometimes be off also helps to reinforce what she knows by practice. For example, you most likely have learned the word "reificate" in English or a preforming arts class, and though the concept you understand, do you even know what the word means? How about the base form of the word, "reify?" Most commonly used in action form, "reification."
An example of such being done, "what has science done!" Science, in this case, has been reificated.

He's young but then I'm 62 so... Is it really different?
@@louisehelene2006 But can you get along or understand a thing or two out of another sign language?
@@Nicolas.Fernandes Imagine you're listening to a German speaker. Based off your English, there may be a few words that sound familiar (ex. house and haus) but you certainly wouldn't be able to "get along". Unless you had studied a bit of German, you'd probably have absolutely no idea what was going on. Same thing happens with sign languages. Even American Sign Language and British Sign Language aren't considered mutually intelligible and they're "based" off the same spoken language. The alphabets are completely different too so it's not like you can finger spell words either. There's a few videos out there showing the differences between Sign Languages used in different countries and how different they can be, even with numbers. Although, I imagine the one advantage deaf signers would have is that they're probably used to gesturing. In the same way that two people that speak different languages can gesture to each other to try and get their point across, signers can do the same and might be better at it since they might be used to doing it with hearing people.
😂😂😂😂

once you get comfortable enough with ASL or a deaf person, u can sometimes see their signs out of your peripheral vision without focusing
@@rachel705 that is so crazy, for her to be looking down and still know what he's saying. I'm not at all saying it's impossible not sure if that's how it sounded, I'm more amazed than anything how comfortable someone can get that they just barely need to see part of a hand sign to know what their significant other is saying!
rachel Not really. It’s quite hard to decipher Signs without full concentration. I’m sure there are people who find it easy but in this case, he just repeated himself.
even when she is looking at him she is looking at him in eyes not in his hands
@@st-atic oh i didn't notice that he repeated himself. but either way quite a lot of deaf people (mostly ones who have been signing all their lives) can decipher and pick out signs just by seeing basic hand movements. it takes a lot of skill but it can be learned. I had a sign teacher who was able to work on her computer and watch us sign at the same time. she knew exactly what we were saying.
At least they never have to worry about who’s on aux
lmao
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
Bro thats bogus LOL
Actually you never know cuz deaf people listen to music through vibrations
So I started the journey of getting my Deaf studies minor at the beginning of this year. I am absolutely in love with it and a few days ago I came across your channel. I love your guys videos and I want to say thank you for posting, spreading awareness, and making content with signs and captions. I feel as if I am learning so many more things just from your videos and it really fills me with joy!!
Such awesome and enlightening content ♥️
This is literary the cutest thing in the whole wide world 💖
Thank you
how is it you can understand without even looking at this hands.
They probably have a screen they can see when they're filming
I thought that too. but i think bc they are doing the same thing so they know the context and when you’ve been together for quite awhile you learn their speak(or in this case lol) sign patterns. So i think just like how you could only hear a few worlds of a convo, you know he’s example: talking about the time at work. Maybe that’s how it is.
For ASL most of the context and expression in the sentence is in the facial expressions. When you’re fluent you can watch the signs with your peripheral vision and watch the expressions so you get the full meaning and context.
My deaf ASL teacher told us we have to learn to understand signs without staring at the signer's hands. Apparently it can be considered rude if you just watch their hands. Also, facial expressions are SUPER important to understanding what's being said
when you look at his lips and hear the small sounds you can tell what he's saying very often
If you turn on the caption you can actually read what he says. This is the best relationship goals I've seen.
Awwww, I just found this channel and I love it so so much. Yall are the best and keep teaching.
In the dark with my boyfriend, for *I love you* we grab each other’s hands and squeeze three times. Or throughout the day, if I’m busy and can’t sign, he’ll squeeze my hip or tap my shoulder three times as an I love you.
Thisnamestillsucks awww that is beautiful
That's really cute
that’s so cute aww
Aawww that's so sweet 😊😊😊💜
My bf and I are also doing the 3x squeezing hand, but we're not deaf - almost universal, it's cute :)
This is the calmest “story telling” and couple channel I’ve visited. And cutest ngl
I still love watching y’all’s videos when they pop up. So wholesome
Best intro ever suggesting Closed Captions. Thank you. Incredible video!
I seriously thing this shows how love is so strong I love how hard she is trying to learn how to talk to him cuz she loves him. The world needs more love and nice people. One love guys
Aaron Sharp One Love!
true, they both must have tried really hard.
She already learned sign cause they go back they had to do it when they were just dating back when they were teens living in their parents houses so she already knew
Exsqueeze Me she learnt it for him, before they were dating she learnt it to talk to him
She said "I never did that" and then he was like "yes in the bathroom" and her face went 😳
Every single video of yours i am smiling, thank you 🧡
Just discovered you guys, and I think you’re both amazing humans! So kind and compassionate. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’ve already really opened my eyes and inspired me to start learning ASL 🥰much love! 💗
"Don't talk when you're eating/your mouth is full" 😂 doesn't apply here
Lol I'm not deaf but I studied ASL for my second language in college. When my mouth is full but someone has asked me a question or I really want to add to a conversation, I start signing even when no one else around knows sign. It's kind of habit.
@@bonniea8189 at least then they will stop talking and look at you all confused until you finish eating and can say it.
@@arandomgirl306 Haha yeah you're right
@@bonniea8189 learned asl a few years back at home at home and it became a habit i would bring to school and i would do that same thing until the teachers called about me using gang signs 🤣
@@whatthefuckisthis7 ugh that sucks, I'm sorry. Did they reverse course once you explained? Some friends of mine and I got pulled over for yelling to a car full of other friends of ours ahead of us at a stop light. The cop said we were throwing gang signs. The absolute comedy gold of the situation was that we had all just left a Renaissance Fair and were still in full costume. So I guess if your definition of "gang" means a "troupe" of reenactment nerds, then sure, we were a gang.
I agree with what someone else said - I feel like I’m sitting and listening to friends tell me something. You guys have great vibes.
glad we are all friends here :D
friends with benefits
You are not old and a wonderful video. Thank you and wish the best for the both of you.
He’s young. I love these videos. Very eye opening. Thank you.
I love how she always gives eye contact when he is speaking/signing. I don’t understand how she does it because I’d have to be staring at the hand signs! But it’s really nice watching them communicate
That's Deaf culture. You're not supposed to watch the hands you look at the face. I just had this talk to my best friend because she was staring at my hands. Our culture is different. It's culturally correct to look at the face not hands.
Catalleya Storm hopefully you’re more forgiving of us newbies who are still learning ASL... I’m not trying to be rude I swear! it’s good to know that it’s rude though, I’ll definitely try not to next time I talk with someone with ASL
@@kidonaplanet4583 it helps that most people, even those who were born deaf, have followed lip movement and/or gone to speech therapy, and like Ryan, as you see here, moves their mouths when they talk, and a lot of the time that helps you to understand what they are saying. Even expressions or the way they do something shows you what they are trying to say. It does take getting used to and like with anything, as long as you clarify you arent trying to be rude and apologize, and keep working at it, I'm sure anyone you communicate with will understand.
Work at developing and using your peripheral vision more.
@@rogerdunn5491What, you can _develop_ peripheral vision❓ HOW⁉️ I always assumed that it was like eyesight, and can get worse/ more limited but not better 😳
Ryan is interesting. He IS an old soul and yet a kid at the same time
I love how y’all compromise and work at the relationship! #GOALS 🤍🤟🏼
I’ve never enjoyed reading subtitles until today!!
I love you guys🤟🏽
