  • In this episode, I am making my way into Southern California, to train with Mason Klein. At 20 years old, he rode his first Dakar and got 9th place! An incredibly talented rider, and patient teacher - he taught me some very valuable motorcycle and navigation lessons.
He is not a factory rider (yet), and is still trying to get enough funds to compete in Dakar which starts in a couple of days from now! If you want to help support a young rider and cheer him on to the podium of Dakar - check out his GoFundMe page:

Thing is...when you are at top of a hill looking into a valley followed by a hill, it messes with your perspective. The upcoming hill will always look steeper than it is. It's crazy how fast your skills will improve riding with someone faster than you as long as you are on semi-equal equipment. I wonder what springs are in the Beta? Might be a little stiff for her weight/speed?

Congrats to Noraly for your courage and skill. I relived old memories through your adventures.
By the way, my brother and I always wanted to race, Dad & Mom put an end to that.
Hi everyone responsible. I am 68 now, and rode California desert with my family and friends all though my teenage years and beyond The bikes included a modded Suzuki 185, an Ossa Pioneer 250, a Bultaco Pursang 250. We had a blast! we would go out in groups and our teacher was a man who rode in the expert class. We learned so much. We used to ride what is called a "hare and hounds", the loop was typically 60 to 100 miles. We knew where we were by following the ribbons tied to the sagebrush.
I have a comment about bikes then and now. Back then anyone seriously riding the dirt rode 2-stroke bikes. Why? lighter, cheaper *much* better acceleration (and that sound) and no valves to worry about. Since most 4-strokes didn't fit the bill, (As in Honda) they were not taken seriously by competitive riders.
Now after a long lapse, getting back into riding, (but no-longer dirt)
I see the modern dirt bike as big in displacement, 4-stroke, and heavy, not a dirt bike as I grew up with.
    I see times have changed.
So why did 2-stroke bite the dust? (sorry, couldn't resist) to put it simply, emissions.
What a shame. Thanks California Air Resources Board.

Awesomeness continues: actually not unlike your x country adventures. Rallying is proving to be a more intimate, down to earth way of seeing some beautiful country.

Already watched Charly's video of the Rally, saw you and him talking. He was glad to finish it, let alone get a place! I hope this training helped your efforts in the rally. Glad Mason is helping you, Charly even missed some turns and appears easy to do. GREAT hill climb!! Awesome!! Let it go girl, don't be afraid, you've done far too much riding to worry. Stay safe

Great line choices on that hill climb. I'm always watching as if I was riding the bike myself and you rode it exactly like I would have. Downhills are always tougher, but you did great there too.

I am so impressed with your riding and willingness to try new things . Every new form of racing is a learning experience from day one . Some racing like motocross and Road Racing is flat out . But the smart racer doesn't override their skill and knowledge , watches the leaders for their skills and always tries to do better . You are a smart rider Noraly and I know you will do well...( at your pace ) . You have that competitive instinct . Good luck and have fun ! PK

Not sure how to say this, i do not want to offend. While this is interesting, i miss those beginning days starting in India. I can only imagine your feelings when you reflect where you came from and now. It seems a lifetime. I am 73, while not as adventurous of a life, it has been interesting. The end is near, and I wish my life had been different. So much of it was stolen by others, primarily by spouses. Thank you for taking us along.

I think riding with people that are *better* then yourself is always a blessing as long as you know your own limites and dont push to much over them but this guy really seems to keep that in mind great teacher for his age!
