That was so cool to watch. This guy needs his business name on the wall. That was global advertising and thanks to Noraly's great camera skills, it showed some great professionalism.
Like some below, I think Honda is dropping the ball. (Even though, Noraly has stripped Alaska to the frame and rebuilt it.) Our Noraly has 1.5 million dedicated viewers of her every move.
Since I found her, about a year, she has solo traveled from the tip of South America to the top of North America on a motorcycle. Then, she put her bike in the shop for a rebuild, rented another bike, and raced in a real Baja Rally race. (including finishing the race injured.)
Then, I realized all of that was only the tip of the iceberg.
I don't get impressed by much anymore, but Noraly and her travels/adventures, all of it, have kept me looking for her and a new post every time I sign on. It's one of the most impressive things I've ever witnessed.
Someone in television is going to figure it out. There are a lot of people doing the same sort of thing on the net, but none are as interesting and compelling to watch as her.
Kudos to those mechanics.
Glad my heart didn't have so many parts when my surgeon rebuilt it. Crashed my bike and cracked my sternum. A year later I had shortness of breath and night sweats. Went to emergency and my aortic root was about to rupture...blunt force trauma from bike crash probably caused the issue. 7.5 hours in surgery and 13 years later I get to watch Noraly. Life is good.

A lot of comments have been, "why not just buy a new bike?" The point is that all motorcycles are a compromise, they are designed to be all things to all riders. The exception to this are competition machines that are designed for one specific purpose. Even a brand new motorcycle would need upgrades to meet Noraly's specific requirements. So the obvious course of action is to keep the tried and tested parts of "Alaska", and tailor other parts to achieve a motorcycle perfect for the "Itchy Boots" adventures that we know and love.

Thats right. Real motorcyclists do understand. That road warrior has traversed two whole continents and deserves a proper upkeep.
That young guy is a genius when it comes to motorcycles. He takes them apart like they are Legos!!

4:33 - I'm not even into motorcycles (outside of your channel) and I think it's good to spend the money to get the best parts in your position, It's one thing if you have limited budget and a motorcycle that you ride once every few months, but you're on that every day for several hours and putting it in irregular more difficult scenarios which in my eyes is 100% worth it.
It's also cool to see you break everything down and why you're choosing certain upgrades, Even if it's not something I would usually be interested in I love learning and I love seeing passionate people talk about their passions :)

Amen! But then, they are both top tier rivals, KTM and Honda, both companies are revered for depth of knowledge, history and quality. I think he’s just admiring what he’s finding, and giving respect appropriately.

It's a fairly standard engine rebuild. Mechanics all over the world are doing this stuff everyday and on some much bigger engines.
As a previous Honda motorcycle mechanic and Service Manager, I can appreciate all that is happening in this video. Looks like you found yourself some excellent techs to help you out. Can't even count the number of times I have done this to my own bikes (dirt and road).
I think Honda should notice this and sponsor Noraly's motorcycle journey to save her money as well as a thorough endorsement of the CRF300 Rally's durability by Noraly herself.
Edit: I think an acknowledgment from Honda would be enough.
Honda would not do a free engine rebuilt let alone sponsor a new bike. I know we all love Noraly but Honda has many such big name customers.
Yes and Noraly should use her influence and experience to give some tweaks or options to make this honda a real adventure bike.For example, a bigger tank option or a one person saddle and better luggage fasteners (cloer to the center of gravity).
Once you have a sponsor you have to do what they want, not what you want.
There couldn't be a better advertisement for the CRF than today´s video! The health status of the engine and all intestines is really good in face of what Alaska has been put through!
So Honda should sponsor also my 93 Africa twin with 120.000km

I would definitely do the same, replace worn parts, upgrade certain areas like the additional tank and get her ready for the next journey. After than i would retire her in my living room and put images of her travel all over the tank. She would be too sentimental to get rid off and she would such a great conversation piece
As a former motorcycle mechanic I especially liked this episode. I remember cracking open up to 3 engines per day and seeing either good maintenance conditions or OMG put in box and tell owner major items need replacing (due to abuse or laziness by owner). You are in good shape with those guys - and any mechanic will refer to the manual! Have fun with all the new goodies! Try to use the best lubricants possible.

Alaska is like an old horse; having taken it’s rider through thick and thin, the bond is deep and mutual between the two. If your steed has been loyal and true then you must take care of it with respect and love.
Someday you can put it out to pasture but for now enjoy its company one more day

This is additional comment; see what religious maintenance does for the life of mechanical parts; Noraly you have shown us that proper maintenance including oil and filter changes ( air filters too) can extend the life of a engine-bravo for the Honda reliability too!

It’s kind of cool that you and Ari Hemming (Shop Manual) both have Honda rebuild videos, giving the bikes some love after challenging Alaskan adventures. It’s also a reminder how much effort went into the original design and engineering of such “simple” machines. I think you really lucked out, finding Bill’s shop, since he is clearly one of the old school, knowledgeable and conscientious mechanics, and one who wisely has a dog supervising everything that goes on in the shop. I cannot wait to see where the next season of adventure takes us.

When you look inside the outer skin of bikes it always amazes me how much stuff is packed inside. It's really great that you found truly skilled moto mech's to revive Alaska for more adventure fun "abuse".

Absolutely love this footage. Those gentlemen definitely know their business. It was wonderful watching them. It’s so great that you were willing to restore Alaska as you did instead of buying a new one.
I am truly amazed at the strength of the frame after all the abuse this bike has been through.
I imagined Alaska smiling by looking at the kind of attention she gets from the mechanics and the care Noraly gives to her . Great. The open heart surgery done to the engine was really great. The Surgeons are experts and fantastic.
During heart surgery the smile has to be put in place by retainer clamps in the corners of the mouth, though. Might be a bit weird, maybe accept a 😵-face for a bit until the smile is real again! 🥳
Except that an actual surgeon has to work on a heart while it's still running..

Not sure how you’re going to build on your already amazing achievements. Navigating continents and making friends who speak dozens of different languages, all the while bringing with you more than a million followers, is an insurmountable challenge for most, but you did it all with a smile. Amazing!
I’ve been riding for 58 years but am no Mechanic. It amazes me to see these guys tear it down to parts then put it back together again - CORRECTLY!
As a mechanic, and a fellow Honda duel sport owner (CRF 450RL) i absolutely love this. Hondas are built to withstand neglect and keep running, your maintenance throughout your journey definitely shows! There is nothing i see in this video that makes me think that Alaska was going to give up any time soon. This just shows you how hard you are able to push your bike. Looking forward to see the upgrades, and your next adventure.

The only problem that Honda really needs to address is the design of their output shaft to the front sprocket. They've been using that same poor design for decades, and they really should switch to the type of shaft with lots of small splines that fit tighter, instead of just a few large ones that fit loosely to the sprocket.

Your bike mechanic skills are amazing and even though I do not own a bike I learned a lot from watching this. I also learned that you have to have long nails to be able to troubleshoot many internal parts.
Dude when you don't try Anything you never getting skilled in Nothing. I make video, s too for almost 15 to 20 years. But when I see an Old movie of mine, I am much beter the last Year. Try and learn... By Experience.. Good luck
As much as I have enjoyed your travels and Baja, this video really ranks right up there. It's a testament to your riding skills and care.
These guys are professional even if small. The repairs she requires could pay for a new bike. But it would be without the upgrades she wants. And no factory bike will. It is also possible to upgrade reliability too. I understand why she is doing it. However if she goes into the outback for a season, the bike will be toast after. After the second fork seals, you need to polish the tubes. There are many other increased costs. Especially when paying parts and labor. Many of us repair our own. I followed Noraly from the first episode when it came out. I have the same 2018 white himilayan. I bought it after I saw her video. Only got 7000 miles on mine. Mostly short drive to work with a few outings every year. Noraly puts me, and most of her viewers to shame in skill, determination, endurance, and bravery. I know I will never do what she is doing. Yet because I am a biker, have ridden forests, beaches, deserts, cities, highway, etc (in 61, started 17), I am living a whole other life through her eyes. Thank you Noraly.
I am so happy to see Alaska again, I missed her...she looks beautiful, even after being taken apart into small pieces...she is just a precious, loyal companion that deserves all the care you are giving her.
I don't think it is foolish to spend the money fixing up Alaska, but I do think that Honda would have been very happy to take her off your hands in exchange for a new model. Their factory having the opportunity to tear it down and evaluate is rare. Plus, having millions watching you is great advertising.

As someone who has rebuilt countless motorcycle power plants, kudos to you Norally, for being a very good caretaker of you bike. Goes to show that proper maintenance goes along way towards making sure you do not strand yourself. Great video and thank you guys for going the extra mile for Alaska.
I love the variety of content on this channel. The social experience + travel is what drew me in first, however, I love the shop talk! It really creates a whole moto-experience!
I am pleased mostly that she didn't hurt herself, more badly, on the rented Gas Gas from the broken bone brothers. These fellas are truly the type of "motorcyclists" she really needed to meet and obviously know their stuff, inside and out. No bull, no inflated stories, no injuries, except the countershaft damage. No doubt that was caused by an improperly installed sprocket along the way, or bad chain tension etc. I am looking forward to seeing the finished upgraded bike. Easily one of the best video installments as of late, that Baja rally series was painful to watch, glad its over, this is far more interesting and applicable to her riding "adventures". Thanks for the entertainment.....

As the owner of the same bike, I’m very curious how much this cost.
I think with a new clutch and some bearings your Honda would have easily made it another season. But I think this level of preventative maintenance is to be respected. Much like your travels, it is an example of excellence.
Wow, watching this really makes me want to become a motorcycle mechanic. Too old to change careers now, but if I had to do it all over again....

I'm surprised a 300 small engine would have taken you so far Noraly without breaking down more than it did, regular oil changes and filter changes work wonders. It was inevitable that the head bearings and frame would eventually succumb to the terrain!!! Testimony to a rock solid engine and a considerate rider, well done!
Yamaha ybr 125 (125cc) with 10 hp easily makes 60000 miles with full throttle 8500 rpm/60 miles in a hour, without engine repair, and this engine does not have even oil filter, so yes, small not always bad))
Size is pretty much irrelevant. If anything, small engines are easier to work on and are usually simpler. Look up C90 adventures...
Also helps it is not so high strung for higher power but keeping it moderate power

I'm not really a motorcycle guy but I really enjoyed this video and have learned a lot about the motorcycle world in the 100's of Itchy Boots episodes I've watched. With education comes understanding and respect.
Being present whilst Alaska is being upgraded by professionals is therapeutic. You have better knowledge on how the motor works.
First, having an attitude of wanting to travel on a bike alone across many countries.
Then you went for training on a dirt bike in the Netherlands. Tried the skills you learnt in two rallies.
Now it’s the knowledge of your bike.
It is A.S.K. - Attitude, Skills and Knowledge.
It is complete for our dear Noraly.

So glad you have completely competent tech’s wrenching on Alaska. Particularly the young guy continually referencing the manual on a very public platform demonstrates self esteem and comfort being scrutinized by CZcams.. this gives us who know what they are doing confidence you will be relying on a squared away machine… Hope you bought them lunch and took care of them because they certainly were taking care of you and Alaska..
of all the bikes you have taken on your journey , alaska has been the best so far and she connected with a lot of your followers including me. she is a testament of how good and reliable a honda motorcyle can be in the hands of a responsible owner. i ❤️alaska…she is not perfect but she just keep on going and going…and going…🙂
You prove over and over why Honda's are such great machines and practically bulletproof. You push their machines to such limits and they hardly wear or breakdown. If I was the CEO of Honda I would send you a new bike and give you all the support you need on your journey! You're a hell of an ambassador for their brand!

I'm with you Debbie, love my Hondas always have since 2nd grade with my trusty 50, then upgraduated to a 70!! Have 3 wheelers and need to lower a 230 as I be SHORT!! OH but the zoom Zoom!! and have lived on pins n needles with Noralys adventures! Wished I had been lucky to meet her whilst she was in Colorado🥲🤩go Noraly😍!!
Noraly you couldn’t ask for better men at an independent shop to work on your bike, those two mechanics are the real deal, and I hope their business radically blossoms from this video. The condition of the bike is a testament both to Honda's design and build quality, and your good intuitive sense of how to ride and maintain the bike without pushing components to the point of damage - you have changed fluids and fllters whenever you could, plus of course repairing "survival" items like those fork seals as needed. A lesson for all of us! Looking forward to Alaska's reincarnation and to your next adventure!
I always find it amusing when you go back and show things, Like “Ignore engine light”. Then again. “Ignore engine light” then again. Humor is good for the soul. I'm going to say "What have I done..." is a rhetorical statement but, it does have a very common answer. You had somebody go through your engine and motorcycle looking for anything amiss. It's a smart thing to do #1 so you don't end up stranded somewhere and #2 there's a good chance it will save you money in the long run. It's easy for one failing part to cause lots of other parts to fail. Now you have a fresh engine on a fresh motorcycle.
Great episode. It goes to show how the combination of a rider with mechanical sympathy and a well built motorcycle can take you to amazing places.

I was going to say basically the same thing. Hondas are some of the best engineered machines on the planet. Their mechanical engineers are very good, especially considering their goal of a profitable, reliable, mass-market product.
Really enjoyed this vid, Noraly. I have my fingers crossed we'll get to see more episodes of Alaska's rebuild. Fascinates me, the ingenuity of so many small parts that accumulate to a machine that carries you all around the world. Amazing really.
My motto has always been "Better safe than sorry", so I am totally with your choice to tear Alaska down and replace/upgrade all of the necessary parts before attempting your next adventure. And I'll say this again, you are one amazing and awesome Lady.

Quite amazing the intricacies of the technology in the heart of Alaska. It's a humbling experience for most to try and understand how everything interacts. Your journey has brung a lot of flashbacks in my off-road days.. I was the first to buy a 4-stroke when all my friends had two strokes it was a 1993 dr350 Suzuki. My friends called it the Lead Sled but... after a few modifications there was a new King of the Woods I restrung my suspension front and rear opened up the air box put a megaphone on it and b re jetted the carburetor she pretty smooth out there in the Ozarks mountains. but but you are living my dream I don't know how you get to financing to do this but more power to you. Keep it wfo

I like the way the younger mechanic is constantly checking and looking at the manual book for answers and for the correct way to repair Noraly's bike. The older mechanic is like, we don't know what we're doing. LoL!
He knows the whole world is watching them besides Noraly, so they are gonna be at their best mechanical behavior ever..
In all seriousness, it's wise that Noraly is there to make sure all is well with her bike because now she has tons of experience riding and she does not want to get stuck between a rock and a hard place down the line in her travels. She just wants a good safe riding experience on her next big travel journeys. Good luck honey.
