  • We had an exceptionally warm day in November, so Nancy and I headed to the beach to find look for some rocks. We found some beauties. I even slabbed one and polished a couple for you. I think you'll like this one! Want to see what I did with that rock? I'll show you in this video: • You Asked For It! View...

    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

      I haven’t made puddingstone hearts in a year or two. There was still a Kona dolomite one there last time I was in, so I figured there wasn’t much demand for them. Maybe I’ll make some more out of puddingstone to see if they sell. Thanks for your purchases!

    Your vids speak to my soul
    Born in Whitefish Bay Wisconsin my family vacationed up in Crandon on lake Lucerne We then lived in Deerfield Illinois… The site & sounds of the lake remind me of those Halcyon days …. Again I’m dumbfounded on how your able to create such beautiful pieces out of stone - That black one is stunning ! The slabs you created with the patterns on the inside - they remind me of the Nazca lines down in Perú
    Last night I showed Mother ( Late stage dementia sufferer ) this latest video and she was enraptured …. She suddenly had all kinds of wonderful lakeshore memories come flooding out ( pun intended 😅 )… of her time on the beaches of Milwaukee her hometown … So thanks to the both of you she had a great night !!!

    It's so nice sitting here in our foot of lake effect snow seeing you in shorts wading in the lake. I always love the nature vistas you give us in addition to the great rocks. That green rock you slabbed would make good turtles or crosses. Could you give me some more info on the fossil "cladypora" (don't know how to spell it). I just love them and you did a great job polishing it for Nancy.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem

      Less than a week later we had snow too. Not a foot, but several inches that are still here. It's hard to imagine that I was out wading just over a week ago.
      Cladopora is a coral fossil in black matrix. It smells like oil when you cut or polish it. That's the common name people use for it, but I don't know if it's scientifically accurate. There's a guy who calls himself "Paleo Joe" who does guided fossil hunts in Michigan. He's doesn't actually have a degree in paleontology, but seems pretty knowledgeable. I sent him pictures of a cladopora fossil and he said that it was difficult to say exactly what coral fossil it was. I'm guessing that I and others call a lot of similar fossils "cladopora" that might not actually be cladopora.

      I'm definitely thinking of making a video of the slabbed rock. Maybe I'll make a variety of things from it. It's funny that you called it black and green. Someone else called it green and white, I think. In person, it's green with yellow markings. I guess every screen shows it a little different.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem +1

      I was just down in the basement looking at that slab again. I'm going to change my assessment of the color. I'd call it very dark green with very light green streaks.

    You guys sure timed that right, a very useful luck-skill to have in Michigan. The wife’s work and kid’s school has limited our forays to the Big Lake. The Huron gets another season of ice flows to grind rock for us, it’s too cold to go out now, cool new waders and felt bottomed boots just don’t make up for the ice forming on one’s eyebrows.
    Question? Any luck slicing rocks like the big white one @11:30? I’ve seen a few of these but also left them behind. My 5 inch saw wouldn’t make it through the job. I’ve imagined them to hold a really, really old geode-like feature inside.
    When it’s warmer, if you’d ever like to have a few young, photogenic admirers (my girls) join you on one of your hunts, we’d love a trip to some new beaches! Stay safe, stay warm, keep the videos coming!
