My dream for any cat is to live like this. You need more cats, my friend.
Maybe instead of expanding the catio, make them more intresting with herbs planted along different sections to trigger their noses, waterfountains or moving rainwater ornaments (some make music/sounds) birdbaths water and sand and birdfeeders if not in bear country. Catnip, catgrasses, water along the shelves.... good luck with the project!!!! Love what you did so far....

Over the years, owning many cats, a Catio is absolutely the best way to go.
I can relate to staying up all night and searching for days to find missing cats.
Yip. Me too. Sleepless nights and stress and tears. Not to mention broken hearts. Catios are for sure the future. This one is so beautiful, but the good news is that you can do smaller DIY versions.
If you put a litter box or two outside in the catio, your cats most likely would not poop or pee on the turf. Use enclosed litter boxes so that they don't get rain or snow in them, but if you do, try to use unscented litter because sometimes cats don't like the strong scent in an enclosed place and then may not use the enclosed litter boxes.
One of the best parts of this is unspoken. It can withstand outside forces. I've built a lot of catios and seen others build theirs, but too many people think "contain the cat" not "keep out the coyote." That catio is both amazing, as well as structurally sound. Any large predator that does try to smash into it either (a) isn't getting in, or (b) will be delayed long enough for the cats to get inside. I build all of mine sturdy enough that the cat's owner can fall on top of it and it won't collapse.

I am soooooo excited for your cats to enjoy their catio. It's such an incredible feeling knowing they are safe, and still get to be outside. I sit and watch my 7 cats run around in their catios, with pride that I am able to make them so happy. The joy I feel is so dang satisfying, and I can see you feel the same way. I even put window box catios on all my windows so they have the option to get different views and perspectives. I'm not done yet (I'm never going to be done, haha. I'm OBSESSED building catios), and you'll notice any little thing you change, add, etc, your cats will notice, and appreciate. My cats love new things, lol.

This has everything for felines and people to enjoy together !! Would it help also to have a litter box in that green area maybe - surely you all prefer urine and poo more conveniently contained…it will all come to stink etc as it’s not the actual earth they are utilizing. Your catio plan is really well executed here and I’ll be showing this off to some family members as we have an issue with preferring to keep a cat from running outdoors too! 👍

Bro that is so Awesome!!.. you know it would be really cool to see the catio from their perspective so maybe get 4 small cameras and attach them to their collar somehow and that way we can see them go through the tunnels or in and out of the little doorways to the house ect.. ❤

Always had cats and built my own 12 years ago, but our home doesnt have the space for a catio, but we have plenty of balcony space and cat friendly plants.

Really nice job on the catio sections!! Your babies are so cute! We have five kitties and live in a stilt house, so my husband made a catio with ledges under our house. We also have outdoor furniture in it, and an opening from our upstairs lanai down into the catio (this opening is closed at night).

Such happy little black panthers and ginger kitty ^^ That's definitely a cat paradise! A litter area could prevent them using the floor, and also allow them to bury it. But overall one of the most incredible catios i've seen so far! well done!
My cats had a 11:00PM curfew. They rarely weren't back by then, but on those times, I woukd flick the patio light on and off a few times and call them by name. It made a distinctive loud "click" sound. Once they learned what that flickering light meant, I no longer had to call them. They oulf see tge 🎉lighf from the end of the street. I always remember the time I ficked it, and the light didn't come on.....the bulb had burned out.....but, to my astonishment, my cat came running. She had heard the clicking sound and responded! 😊

I'd put a litter box out there and that would help with them using the bathroom. They might be trying to sort of put their scent there and a litter box helps with that!

I built a smaller one (like 7x11 feet) that my 4 love, and I built a space for a cat box that I can clean from the outside. They definitely use it. It seems like you could put one in somewhere to avoid pee and poop on the fake turf?

One more thing, I didn't see any litter boxes out in the catios or water. Do you have these available for them?
My cats used to be free roaming too. But one got hit by a car. Another in a fight with another cat. And of course waiting for them to come home at night. My hubby built a catio (not as elaborate as yours). Now they hang out on the catio. They’ve actually caught birds before. 😮 (bird must have got too close to the cage). I have thought about expanding their space. The problem is they spray the inside of the catio. I think another cat comes by and sprays the outside. 😢 any suggestions for that? You mentioned your cats used the fake grass to do their business. Do you have litter boxes? Any natural ground for them? My catio has 10x8 area just ground. We put play sand in it. I do have a litter box under the roof area. They use that too.

what type of fencing wire did you use?
Aw I love what you have done! However, as much as we want to keep our furbabies safe, nothing beats real experience of woodland and real natural habitat where they roam and smell plants and are just curious. Would you consider the next move of an extension to your cation with adding in a real portion of your woodland ie part sectioned off and surrounded fenced in to incorporate woodland floor and tree climbing? Maybe grow some cat nip inbetween?
,why not put soil grass and plants down in larger areas ?? Better then fake grass and wont stink so bad if they poop

They will never chase another bird or mouse in their life. How sad. Cats that aren't allowed to be cats. Maybe they would have met their end by a pack of coyotes if they didn't have the catio. But at least they would have been free. This catio was a selfish invention for the owner, and not actually for the cats. If they were given the choice to catio or to be free, we know what the answer would be.
