The battle of Malevelon Creek lasted 58 REAL days before the player base finally managed to liberate it. To put that in perspective, we once liberated 4 different Automaton planets from scratch in a single day. That alone should tell you how much of an absolute hellhole the Creek was to fight on. Super Earth’s President (the developers) then declared the anniversary of its liberation, April 1st, a new holiday. Malevelon Creek Remembrance Day.

Well let's be fair, we DID lose the Creek at one point. I think that the main problem with the Automaton front generally is that we are few. There are much more Helldivers who are stomping bugs because it's fun (Every friend i asked except one said that it's fun and they're afraid of the western front).
Now people may say ''Malevelon Creek isn't that big of a deal'', but here's the thing:
We learned to survive while crawling through the jungles. And afterall, those few who stood and defended the Creek untill the end became the most efficient oil-spilling war machines.
Even though it's a game, It's an honor for me to be the Creek Crawler. And the whole situation about Creek is about people who didn't give up in the grim scenario and fought back. Learning, adapting, overcoming.

Helldivers 2 is widely considered to be a live service game done right. You’re essentially battling in a virtual war that, like real life, is ever changing, all controlled by a single person named Joel like a DnD DM. Planets come and go and new planets sometimes show up. Also, it’s popular because it’s a game that doesn’t have predatory monitization (which is entirely optional since you can only buy a premium currency called Super Credits, which is rather easy to find in missions so you can get everything just by playing the game) and battle passes that you can unlock just by playing and never expire, so you don’t have to treat the game like a job
The Terminids are a bug species that were farmed for Element-710 (710 upside down is OIL), a very important resource needed for travel, but they broke free and now we have to cull their numbers. Focusing on swarm tactics, they are quantity over quality but are still not to be underestimated, especially the fast deadly Hunters, strong tanky Bile Spewers, summoner Brood Commanders, heavily armored Chargers, and near-invincible Bile Titans
The Automatons are a species of blood fueled robots whose goal is to retake Cyberstan (which they have done), home world of the Cyborgs (faction from the first game who is believed to have a connection to the Automatons). Having ranged weapons and lots of armor, they are quality over quantity, needing only a few units to kill you easily, like the numerous armored Devastators, heavily armored Hulks, slow yet powerful Annihilator Tanks, and the brand new and very destructive Factory Striders as well as numerous base structures that can kill you or impair your calldowns

    • @GrassTroll
      @GrassTroll Před 2 měsíci +8

Just wanna reiterate that while the game does have microtransactions, the premium currency is so plentiful that I saw the new Premium Warbond announcement, had basically no currency because I had just bought the last one, and managed to farm up enough currency that I could afford the new Premium Warbond the day after it dropped. Wasn't even farming optimally either, basically just played the game normally.

The casualty numbers are real casualty numbers tracking the number of in-game player deaths. Which is why it's also fun to leave your diver's voice set to "random," just to hammer home that every time you die Super Earth really is just sending one more cadet into the meat grinder. The fact that they always show up sounding calm and idealistic and start devolving into panicked screaming and shouting once they start taking hits or getting overwhelmed by enemies is also a nice touch.
Also, naming your ship (as well as upgrading it) really does turn it into something you get weirdly attached to. Personally, I went with something that appropriately reflects the greatness of Super Earth, which is why I drop into orbit aboard the SES Fist of Benevolence.

the creek is responsible for millions of names on the wall of martyrs. And as someone else said, this difficulty is ridiculous...but we're likely still in tutorial mode....
oh, fun fact. We're trying to set the terminids up on farms. Because their bodies decompose into element 710. And element 710 is a precious resource to the war effort, as it's....look just flip 710 over 180 degrees, and tell me what word it looks like
stratagems aren't the little device you throw. That's the signal for your super destroyer or eagle strike plane to target with the payload of the stratagem.
the open world nature is you can join the fight on any planet that's currently available to attack. You can queue up with up to three friends, or join random missions to play with random people. Every mission is instanced, so you load in a map, objectives, and fight in that area only. but basically all efforts are collective for the entire playerbase
be advised, the game is a live service game, but it's a game with a live service supporting, and not a live service with a game supporting. The premium credits can literally be farmed, and rather easily (1000 premium currency per battlepass, the cost of premium currency is about 1 cent per unit, and it can be randomly found in packs of 10-100 in a mission). The battlepasses never go away and don't expire after a time, meaning any new gear is there to stay, which honestly altogether does justify new weapons being in them.

    Quick overview of helldivers:
1-4 players are drop on a planet in an intergalactic war. Their goal is the wipe out the enemy, complete their objective, and evacuate the planet.
Players get to make a their own loadouts with different armor, weapons, grenades, and most importantly 4 different stratagems.
Stratagems come in a variety of types, from air strikes, turrets, minefields, orbital lasers, or orbital barrages. But also tools that helldivers use by hand like flamethrowers, rocket launchers, railguns, energy shields, and autonomous drones.
Enemies come in two types. The bots specialize in defense and range, creating powerful bases filled with mines, turrets, AA guns, mortars and more. Their troops come equipped with laser guns, grenades, rockets, flamethrowers, and heavy armors
On the other side we have the bugs who specialize in offense and melee. They swarm the player with sheer numbers and rarely let up (max0r wasn’t joking when he said you’ll fight for 40 minutes straight). Each bugs comes with unique fighting styles to overwhelm you, such as stalkers that ambush you with invisibility, chargers with super heavy armor, spewers who fire acid, shriekers who take to the air, or titans that require heavy resources to bring down.

It's older than Max0r's video so may not have some of the more recent events, but its a good intro. Max0r himself says its not his job to explain the game to you, so maybe Rubix's video would be good.
His video "Democracy in its Final Form" also has some pretty funny gameplay clips.

This game takes a lot of references from the movie Starship Troopers, just with a lot more obvious fascism and propaganda. We have ODST style "elite" soldiers as our standard infantry, each one carrying 4 different "strategems" to carry with them to use at any time. These strategems include, but are not limited to: heavy weapons, standard resupplies, automated turrets, orbital bombardment, and mechs. Unfortunately, these mechs are more like the Halo Mantis rather than Titanfall mechs. That being said, we have good reason to believe they will add more vehicles in the future.
As for the galactic war, each planet has its own persistent progress in liberation and/or defense, which can change at any time at the developers discretion. Sometimes, we lose these planets, either because not enough players have completed enough missions or because the plotline demands it.
One of the best parts about the game is how the developers are actively writing its story to mirror how the community performs. For example, the planet Malevelon Creek wasn't originally our main objective, but so many people wanted to try and take it because of its memetic difficulty that we failed the primary objective. A lot of people were not happy with this, and when people who participated in the fight got themselves a dedicated cape to wear, people started griefing anybody wearing that cape. In response, the devs decided to make the Creek our new objective, just to raise morale. It was a massive success, and in-universe they now celebrate its liberation as a holiday.
