- WYMT's Steve Hensley looks back at our coverage of the March 2nd, 2012 tornado outbreak. More than 20 people died in Kentucky, mainly in Morgan and Laurel Counties. Towns like West Liberty, Salyersville and East Bernstadt were hit extremely hard. This story originally aired during our 2012 Year in Review special.
I'm from Crittenden, Kentucky, where the F4 tornado happened(later spreading into Piner, KY). I was about 10 years old, coming home from Walton Verona Elementary. I remember my mother, who was taking me and my friend home was driving very fast. The sky was orangish, black, and green. I didn't fully understand the threat of the outbreak since I had been at school all day. But we got home and my mother instantly turned on the TV. She told us to get in a bedroom in our basement, and that a tornado had been spotted developing over Verona. We ran downstairs but my friend and I ran back up to my room(we live in a ranch style home) to get toys or something ridiculous like that. This is when time almost stopped for me. I remember gazing out my window at the sky and the green light shining in my room. My windows were opened so we could hear the wind roaring outside. But everything was moving super slow, like time was literally freezing. We heard sirens as well. Not to mention, tornados have a very certain smell that I still remember to this day. They smell earthy and a bit like dirt, and every time I smell that in the air, I know there's trouble, it's very weird. So we went back downstairs waited. When they say a tornado sounds like a freight train, they mean it. Our whole house shook as the tornado developed over a nearby neighborhood, Harvester's, and proceeded to cross the interstate and over 25 into Piner. I completely was unaware that my brother, sister, and father were coming home from Walton, going on 25. It was a miracle they didn't get killed as they watched the tornado cross their path. When the tornado finally headed more into Kenton County, they saw HORRIFIC things. Power lines everywhere, dead cows wrapped in trees, some still half alive stumbling around, dead horses, and a deceased man on the side of the road. Many of you may heard of the disabled girl who was trapped with her family in a house on 25 and swallowed debris. My dad and the rest of my family stopped on the side of the road to help the firefighters who couldn't locate the family, and went into the house, and helped find her. I've been in so many tornados because of the area I live in(like the one in Walton on March 1st of this year, or last year in Independence in October), but this one really shook me.
Holy shit I go to Walton Verona High School
I heard classmates talking about this outbreak yesterday during a tornado warning so I checked it out. In 2012 I was living in Ohio and we moved to Verona on New Years Eve of 2012
I was in 7th grade.... i remember looking at the sky on the way home and just knowing something bad was coming. You could feel it in the air
that day my mother, my husband, and myself are beyond blessed to be here today. We were all working at xerox in london kentucky that day, i was the first to end my shift at 3:30pm. my mother and husband would not end their shifts until 7pm. now typically my drive from london - barbourville can take up to 30 minutes, that day i made it to my parents home where my infant, father, and younger brother were. on my way home the wind and rain was so bad i just kept passing emergency workers assisting ppl that had been blown off the road and dodging fallen tree's. at first i was very cautious about driving until the emergency weather report came on the radio and said there were reports of a possible tornado and heading to london. all i wanted was to get home to my daughter and get somewhere that had cell reception to call my husband and mother. i finally got him on the phone and made it home 15 minutes later, my mom however was stuck at work where they could not answer personal calls and no windows to see what was happening outside. finally she was able to call and tell my family everyone was in a small dark hallway at work and terrified by info from other workers family members, so we prayed. not only for each other but for everyone that was impacted by the weather and for those who were about to be. the line cut out, that was the longest 15 minutes of my life to hear from her that the weather calmed down and she was flooring it home to us. we found out from her that london kentucky was impacted badly. driving to work the next day and seeing the damaged homes, business's, fallen tree's, billboards on the ground, and finding out my supervisor and her family lost their home and it was so bad that the trailer flipped breaking her collarbone and her young daughter's nose. it really makes u realize how lucky u really are when that happens. i thank god for listening to our prayers
I'm glade I survived the tornado

@@ashtynsmith465 it almost hit me when i was 6
Man, I remember this. I lived in Louisville and I remember the tornado that hit just two miles from my house.
I still remember this day. Sitting down on my bed with the sky black as night. The power was flicking on and off and we couldnt calm down. The tornado sirens went off for about an hour and my dad was almost about to grab mattresses off are beds and get us under the stairs with the mattress over are heads when the tornadoes had past. That was the scariest day of my life. Not to mention at the time i was 6...
I had just gotten out of West Liberty and back to Cannel City when the first tornado hit that day. I was in 5th grade at the time. It was terrifying.
And see, in Morgan County... only in Kentucky can you get a tornado one day and snow the next... sigh...
Definitely a memorable supercell event.
I was in kindergarten when this happened and that’s the day I remember the most out of every day of 2012
I’m from London Kentucky (Laurel County). I sat in the interior bathroom for several minutes after our power went out. We were on the south side of town so the tornado went about 5 miles north of us in East Bernstadt and it was really scary. I will never forget.
I was in kindergarten and I was so scared a tornado touched in Montgomery county I felt like I was dead
i remember i was atleast 4 when the west liberty tornado happened and then i was drinking water then almost choked when i saw my pappaw who died :(
I was not in the tornado but we did have a derecho and a tornado about ten miles from my house. I was praying that we would survive through this mess. Thank you Lord!
I remember this was really sad, I'm from Barren County, Kentucky we got hit by some severe weather also that year!
We got it in Henryville that year. It was crazy.
I live in Walton and we got hit with an F-4 tornado in march second 2012 in a near by city called piner. It destroyed their school and people died. I remember it like it was yesterday even though that was 5 years ago today.
I was 6 when the one hit London and all I removed is crying and screaming and hugging my mom it was a bad day for the green grass state
Blue*
I live in Fleming County and There was a tornado warning I was in Preschool at the time It was on this day the warning happened. I didn’t know what would happen my mom Got me in to the car I wanted to play in the backyard and I couldn’t because my mom was in a hurry we drove to my grandparents who lived in a house with a basement so we stayed there and waited we were find and no damage but it was scary because we were only 2 counties away from where the West Liberty Tornado happened.
I live in Salyersville and my god I was so scared cause I’m very scared of storms and when I saw this I was scared so bad
I’m from Ashland, Kentucky and I was at my cousins birthday party when this happened
I was terrified when this happened to me at bowling green, I was really scared I cried
I think I remember being at school and seeing that supercell that produced the tornado it wasn't until after school that I heard a tornado hit west liberty.
My left ear liked this
Did get a tornado warning, but a tornado was not confirmed.
I can't remember what happened there. I think I went to the basement and we sat there for a while. I found a storm comic book(ironically) and when it cleared I walked around. my roof had lost shingles and my neighbor's had a flooded walkway. nothing too serious.
i'm from Michigan and there's been three reports of tornadoes already for here this year. they were all in February. there's something wrong here! we get the occasional tornado but three in one month, this is fucking scary as crap for me. I have %100 astraphobia because I've had a few occasions where funnel clouds went on top of me. the 1st time was march 15, 2012. none of the funnel experiences I had touched down on or near me, but over me, damn! I've had 6 different times in these past three years this happened to me. people all think it's a damn joke. that's why I have a very strong fear of tornadoes.
Andover Kansas
I went through this storm in indiana
it will be much. worse in 2017 twister outbreak
That never happened so I guess not lol
I Was In Bowling Green So I Think We Were Safe :)
My birthday is March 2nd, and my biggest fear is tornadoes. LOL. Worst b-day present ever.
My birthday is March 2nd also!!! Yes that's a horrible thing to happen on your birthday!

I remember
i survived in hardin county we uad one that day to
I did to!
Looks more like damage you would expect in Oklahoma.
oklahoma's tornadoes aren't usually severe, they're usually F2's or F1's. Ohio/Kentucky is the 2nd biggest tornado alley, because we are located where the cold front and warm fronts usually meet. They cause for more dangerous tornados.
Not true Oklahoma have the worst tornados ever
I live in Kentucky Barbourville and we rarely get tornadoes Oklahoma u can see there tornados forming in Kentucky London is basically tornado alley cause like u said the cold front and warm front
What i was two when that happen
I'm glad I'm not even near there..
I did not think it was this bad
Jacob Olsen yes it was really really bad I wasn't considering myself I was so small but I can still remember since I quit saying it wasn't that bad ass all the Restriction right now you got to go to Kentucky when there's a tornado outbreak see how you feel
Neither did i. I live north of cincinnati and i had like 3 or 4 tornado warnings but i was like 6 years old so i knew jackshit about weather, but now i know that this was actually THAT bad
I think god for protection over are state the ones who had fallen have been taken by god 🙏
