      Rather than talented, I'd say that he worked his ass off to make the best work he could do. He's obviously talented, since he was able to put together an album as heartfelt as Multitude, but I feel that giving the merit to talent is a bit unfair for the amount of effort he must have put into this album. Anyway, we both agree that the album is amazing, I just felt like I needed to say this

    In each verse, he sings with a different personality, each personality eulogizing/talking about a woman(who was a sex worker) from their perspective, which makes this song a masterpiece...
    In verse 1: He sings like a man who has been a client of a sex worker for years. That's why he says "Everything in life can be bargained if you have money, and after all, I'm probably her best customer"
    In verse 2: He sings like the pimp trying to justify his trade, that's why he says, " I am the one feeding them, their lives would be mediocre without me, I give them a place to sleep ....for 50 40 30 or 20% etc.'
    In verse 3: He sings like a super judgemental policeman addressing the sex worker, that is why he says, "Move along now woman, take back your ID and what's left of your dignity"
    However, in Chorus/Bridge: He sings like a son unconditionally defending a dead mother, that is why he says, "Leave my mom alone, yes I know she's not perfect, she's a hero, and I will speak of her with pride"
    The genius in this is otherwordly!

    • @pierinaisabel2
      @pierinaisabel2 Před 2 lety +18

      Sorry if there are any typos, english is not my first language!
      What I think is that although it is a musical sense-rhyme for enjoyment, the message is that, as the song says, judging is easy especially when you haven't tried it or experienced it. But in this case especially, is a call to attention to prostitution. The song talks about a prostitute, and in the official video it can be seen how, in front of her funeral, her "son" in this case, Stromae, sings about how her life was and the dehumanization people made and still make of her, especially the same people who "used" her service, calling her all kinds of insults. But she is a "hero", for having lived that lifestyle to which she was put into as her only (or perhaps last) alternative to survive. So, I think that the visibility of this job is what the song seeks, especially of those people who die in many ways, and sometimes, due to their conditions as prostitutes, they are not taken seriously.
      Is my personal appreciation ^^

      @@pierinaisabel2 thank you. I was trying to understand the message. It's the 2nd song I hear from his latest album. It's the same theme about the invisible people. Those who barely manage to make ends meet, but who are the backbone of society.

    • @martinestarot4703
      @martinestarot4703 Před rokem

      @@pierinaisabel2 I think it's also about single mothers and men being hypocritical. He often has lyrics that can be interpreted in more than one way. Like the part where he goes from insulting women by calling them whores but then says "Hey!Leave my mother alone!" - it's a point about the general male tendency to degrade women and even use them/objectify them, but at the same time, hate it when other men do that to the women in their lives, not seeing that every woman is a human being, just like their own mothers, daughters or sisters.
      Another interpretation is about the plight of single mothers-who are disrespected in society and face an uphill battle but do everything to provide for their kids, nevertheless. I read that his father basically left him and his mother when he was a kid, so it almost certainly is part of the inspiration for this song, as well as "Papa Out'ai" (Dad, where are you?), another song of his.

    This is how I've learned about Stromae... I went on a walk in Menlo Park, CA where I used to live --> I found a lost iPod (someone was jogging and lost it) --> I brought the iPod home and (out of curiosity) checked the music on that device. --> There were songs of Stromae (among others). I really enjoyed Carmen, Papaoutai, and Tous les mêmes... I became a fan. --> FYI: I eventually managed to find the owner of the iPod; and so, I returned the device back to its owner. It was a French lady who lived in my neighborhood.

    "For those confused about the lyrics and the POV's.
    The first verse is the client, the second one is the pimp, and the third one the police officer.
    Basically, all of them exploit her but they all justify it in different ways.
    The clients hides behind his loneliness, and how hard affection depriveness makes it okay to "look for a little tenderness from time to time". The irony here is when right after he says that he likes to insult (no tenderness) her and that he's probably his best client (because he goes to her so often).
    The Pimp hides behind his role of protector. He despises being hated by everyone when he's the one giving prostitute money and security.
    Again, the irony shows up a few lines later when he says it's okay to rip them off of their money (profit's percentage shares being very inequal), and his security suddenly turns into a trap.
    The Police Officer hides behind the law. He first seem understanding. "Just like you (the prostitute) are doing your job, I'm just doing mine (patroling)." Just like the others you see him finally showing his true sentiment toward her when he insults her and her dignity, while adding that she should find a real job.
    I was also quite confused on the first time I read the lyrics, although I speak French. And that's because there are a lot of lines that could also be pronounced by the prostitute (the first time line, the feeding line, the job line, etc..) which is completely intentional. This whole text is laced with uncomfortable parallels and ironies, serving one clear message: why is it only the prostitute that's being the first one blamed when all fours play a role in this system. Stromae takes the role of a prostitute's son in the MV and chorus and gives her the best and most impressive funeral, turning the tables on how deserving she is and should be respected for serving the country and their men.
    Sorry for the grammar and faults, English isn't my first language. Hope it helped."
