  • Hey everyone, welcome back to a new video! In this one we take a look at the world's smallest countries.
    You might remember me talking about a few of these in previous videos, especially the 'Unknown Countries' series, I guess it makes sense since most smaller countries tend to be less known.

    Fun fact:.apparently Liechtenstein accidentally invaded Switzerland when a border patrol accidentally crossed the border as they had gotten lost, Switzerland said that it was fine as people tend to get lost.
    Also Liechtenstein went to war once and had 80 soldiers but came back with 81 as they had made a new Italian friend.

      You're correct about the 80 army men story, but the other half is kinda incorrect. Liechtenstein never invaded Switzerland, in fact it was the other way around! The Swiss were the ones who got into Liechtenstein's borders by accident due to it's small landmass, the soldiers forgot the microstate even existed until they were too late. Heck some of Liechtenstein's forested areas got burned a bit by the Swiss during another field training with it's soldiers!

    I live near San Marino and I can say for certain that most of the car registered in the Republic are just Italian people registering their car there to save tax money. It's kinda legal in certain situations, like if you have a business or if you have a San Marino citizen buying it for you.

    • @nomad6-1
      @nomad6-1 Před 5 lety +9

      @@geography_joe The extent of it became smaller in recent years, but still living just 20 miles from San Marino I see everyday cars with azure RSM license plates used by people who live in Italy and work in Italy. A friend of mine also bought his Mistusbishi truck there because in Italy they wouldn't let register the vehicle for private use. (pickup trucks should be used just for work in Italy, at least in theory). Airsoft guns and all sorts of personal defense weapons under 7J of kinetic energy are also bought in San Marino at very convenient prices by italians, as well as swords, katanas and other japanese stuff that can hurt you 😂. Thankfully low-tax bank accounts in the Republic are now illegal for Italian to store money in, but some people still manage to do it. No wonder "Everytime a law is made, a loophole is found" is a very popular Italian proverb.

    Your geography is on point but you've goofed a bit with some surface calculations! (Maths is hard :p)
    About the surface area of Valetta: you probably saw that it was 0.8 km² on Wikipedia and converted it to 800 m², but since it's a surface rather than a length, it actually converts to 800,000 m². 800 m² is about the size of my Dad's backyard!
    Then you say that Monaco is only 2 km², and used to be 1,974 km²: you surely meant 1.974 km²...
    By the way, did you know that Vatican City has a density of 2.27 popes per km²? :p

I mean here in the US, you'll find tons of cars at every dealership and the vast majority of them still remain there so that gives me the feeling there are more cars than people even here in the US so how is that well interesting. It's about time that someone admits the reality of this situation: these microstates (+ including Andorra and others) exist solely at the pleasure of their neighbors. They have no way to adequately defend themselves. And at any time over the centuries -- or now, or in the future-- their neighbors could just march in and take over, like India did to Sikkim in 1975. Besides remaining peaceful and neutral, the only "asset" most of these micronations have is special tax laws and other laws that are beneficial to their citizens and their region -- but applied to a limited area and population. If they get out of line, their neighbor(s) may move to annex them -- as France almost did to Monaco in the 1960s.
