  • Even some Mobile Fidelity Sounds Lab Silver labels' have the AAA treatment from the analogue masters. I always thought the silver labels meant it was from a copy of the original.
    Find out which MOFI silver labels are true AAA.

    Did not know this but I know this album really well and was floored by how good the mofi sounded. Now I know why

    Mofi does some weird stuff sometimes. Charging folks premium prices for 4XDSD transfers and claiming they are AAA and now we find out they have been doing AAA titles but charging half the price?
    Hey! I know what they are doing now. They were just evening things out all along by overcharging and then undercharging! Brilliant 😃😂
    Weird stuff man.
    Hey Im a Mofi backer despite their naughtiness 10 months ago. And I will be still eventhough I am not sure I buy their "new revelation" that these Silver Bannered titles are AAA.
    Again, for me anyway, it is all about the sound.
    Do these Silver Bannered Mofi's sound best or not?
    I can say that the ones I have compared lean towards no.
    The Skynyrd title is dull as dishwater. The old MCA brown label wipes the floor with the Mofi.
    The B-52 S/T is pretty good. But yes you should definitely try an og against it. The og IMO is better.
    The other two titles are the Sisters Of Mercy. They, bar none, are the best those rather poorly recorded albums have ever sounded.
    AAA, copytape analogue, 4XDSD...I don't care.
    The bottomline should always be:
    How do they sound?
    Improved mastering or not?
    How does that sound compare to the other versions one has or og's and older reissues?
    Within Mofi there are great sounding 4XDSD transfers (some definitive) and there are some great AAA titles.
    I went back and tallied the which are the best sounding Mofi's and guess what?
    More 4XDSD titles won than AAA.
    So what do we make of that?
    You gotta listen and compare. It comes down to case by case and comparison by comparison basis.
    Thanks for the update Steve! Im sure those who place great weight into AAA purity will be glad about the news. I wonder if they will now think the confirmed AAA titles sound better? 🫤

    Mofi don't use the definite article "the". It's from "an" analogue master, not necessarily the original - however we might choose to define 'original'. The first ever bounce down of the mix onto 2 channels? A dub copy created as the master for cutting in foreign territories? An EQ'd production master? As I understand it - Mofigate notwithstanding - the Silver Label always indicated that the provenance of the master could not be confirmed as being the original, first-generation tape. Sometimes it could be, hence "analogue master" other times they know it's an analogue copy and so specify that. As an example, I have the Mofi Silver Label of Ryan Adams' "Love Is Hell" and a couple of the tracks are different mixes to the original release, suggesting it wasn't the original 2 channel master used (whether analogue or digital source). I think its the same for the "Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab" bannered records - T.Rex "Electric Warrior" isn't on the Silver Label but is cited as an "analogue copy" for the source. Perhaps Silver Label also means 33RPM, more basic vinyl formulation in the pressing, single disc, less impressive jacket, etc? PS. Apologies to people in the United States, but I've followed Steve's example and spelled 'analogue' correctly 😁

    The website just says “analog master,” not “original.” Couldn’t that mean a tape copy like a safety tape?

    Half of "Cosmic Thing" was digitally recorded originally. So it is not completely analog. Thank you for clarification on source material these B 52 items.

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
      @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion Před rokem

      Using that logic, Brothers in Arms and The Nightfly would be Silver as they were all digital.

    • @casperdowlen625
      @casperdowlen625 Před rokem +1

      @@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion No, I'm just stating a fact. Half of this album was recorded digitally. My comment only has to do with this so called analog master tape. The Nightfly is a very special case because it is 3M Digital. Nothing else is like it or sounds like it. It is a unicorn. Many earlier digital recordings were very well done: Flim & The BB's "Tricycle " for instance. And yes, they also did get recorded on an experimental 3M machine. Trouble is you cannot play back the master tape. However It was released on vinyl. it's a rare bird.

    I believe it was Michael Fremer at one time mentioned that the silver “Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab” banner didn’t necessarily mean that it’s digital. It meant that the actual original master couldn’t be obtained and that it may be a safety copy or a tape a generation or two off. Whatever the case, it was always an understanding that the analog source’s provenance couldn’t be 100% verified.

    • @stevewestman7774
      @stevewestman7774  Před rokem

      Yes. But clearly MOFI can verify now. According to MOFI’s website the B52 cuts are from the analog master.

  • @dabernarda1490
    @dabernarda1490 Před rokem

    Got them both. The Cosmic Thing especially, sounds digital in the sense that as only more bass and treble than the original press that I have. No more air, better tone or information.
    And believe, i have master tapes 1/4" 15ips and understand what the sound of a near source sounds like. To me, I suspect it's more snake oil crap from mofi...

    Great info my friend.

  • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion

    This revelation is problematic in that MOFI used Silver when they weren’t able to verify the source was OMR. I mean they down grade the title and cost using silver. So will these be OMR branded? This is where credibility and transparency need to meet through an explanation. I won’t hold my breath. This just has an awkward smell to it. Was their due diligence this poor?

    • @stevewestman7774
      @stevewestman7774  Před rokem

      Well we know this revelation was not from John the Elder but MOFI’s website. Who knows how they go about their due diligence but one would assume they knew some of their Silver labels were AAA for years which predates DSDgate.

    • @FleagleSangria
      @FleagleSangria Před rokem +2

      @Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion As you know I am a bit of a Mofi defender. But I don't get this either. We said these were unvarifiable as OMR for all these years on these titles and now all the sudden we can? Eh, I dont know, Im kinda bothered by that also.
      But, as I have said before, the bottomline is:
      What do they sound like?

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
      @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion Před rokem +1

      @@FleagleSangria agree sound is the metric. But this one is off track enough to warrant an explanation, this isn’t about DSD, so there’s no legal jeopardy in this.

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
      @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion Před rokem

      @@stevewestman7774 I cannot believe they knew they knew they had an OMR product that they then would brand Silver at a lower retail and even reduce the buyer pool being non-OMR.

    What about Sisters Of Mercy - Floodland

    • @stevewestman7774

      Yes. That too is also AAA from original masters.

    • @FleagleSangria
      @FleagleSangria Před rokem +1

      @Robert Endsley I don't really know what the source is, Mofi says AAA according to Steve here so I take that at face value and I guess what they are claiming is true.
      But the biggest thing here is not what source was used but what they sound like.
      Im a pretty big fan of those two albums and they never have sounded great or even that good. Just a dark recording.
      However, the Mofi's are absolutely the best Ive ever heard and I have several different interations of the albums.
      Bottomline:
      These two titles are absolutely winners IMO. Others have also confirmed this that are hardcore Sisters Of Mercy.
