I was like 5 when I saw this but honestly I didn't find the movie scary so much as I found it strange and confusing and really depressing and different from anything else I ever watched but I was just really freaking sad at the end "huh why did every thing freeze, what how is he climbing the freaking snowflakes, wait did he DIE! wait nooooooo fuuuuuuuuu-" I think I watched it a few times after that to try and make sense of the movie but I haven't watched it since then but its been lingering in the corners of my brain ever since and I find my self thinking of it every now and then and then I saw this video and was like "HOLY CRAP ITS THIS FUCKING MOVIE" and clicked immediately

if i remember correctly either the book was based off a concept album or the concept album was based on the book - all i remember is out of the three the movie is the one that was made last (it uses the songs from the album) - so i guess they just tried fitting that one song that doesn't really have anything to do with the movie's plot into the movie as best as they could

'La mécanique du coeur' is like my favorite novel and when you tried to pronounce it i had an aneurism rapture. But very cool to see someone talk about this masterpiece ! fun fact : the original author (Mathias Malzieu) is also the principal director of the movie and the lead singer of the band (Dionysos) that made the music for the movie. So that's why everything just blends in so good. The ending is also very different from the book. it's kinda long to explain but here i go.
SPOILER WARNING FOR THE ACTUAL NOVEL. So in that version Jack doesn't actually die and just gets in a long coma, pursues his dream to be with Acacia who is now married with joe, actually achieves it, but fumbles by not revealing his actual identity. Acacia gets really mad, dumps him and just lets Jack reflect on his actions and their consequences and they just go on and live their life.

Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart always had sexual undertones this is literally one of the songs in the bands Dionysos songs litterally has the name of a female part as its title it says “[Redacted] Mon Amour”
When Jack first meets Acadcia swirls appear on her chest. The movie had a lot of sexual undertones
The sexual undertones were there and even more so in the album I think than in the movie, most likely to tone it down for a younger audience even tho I would t recommend this movie to children.

little tip to fully understand the "weird" moments of the movie, rewatch it as many times as possible, it will start to click after a few rewatches. I re-discovered the movie after a few years of just remembering it being a childhood favorite, and its still a favorite. The music for this film is my favorite part because it was made by an actually talented band called Dionysos (Dionysos "cameos" in the movie during the Ghost Train sequence, and the lead singer Mathias I think does both the English and French voice for Jack, not sure tho)
Check out Dionysos though, genuinely great stuff. I recommend the French soundtrack over the English though. There was also a cut song from the movie called "Tais-Toi Mon Coeur". There's a music video of it up on youtube, and it's personally one of my favorite tracks from the movie's album.
Actually thank you for reviewing this. You've been one of my favorite youtubers for a while, and Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart has been SUPER underrated and obscure for so long, I'm glad more people like you are talking about it and giving it a chance.

i watched this movie as a kid because it's quite popular in france, and then rewatched it at like, 12 years old and made it my entire personality. i've always loved the creepy but also cute and poetic vibes, and how slightly nonsensical and whimsical universe. many backgrounds characters have these cool quirks and designs. i really recommend listening to the album "La mécanique du coeur", which is by the band Dionysos. the singer of this band is the author of the book the film is based on and the album is REALLY good. overall, i just love the fairytale vibes of this movie, and how artistic, funny and emotional it is

I watched this 8-9 years ago with a friend of mine, I absolutely hated it, but it might just be how my friend reacted to it, by the end she was bawling like a baby, digging her finger nails into my arm, mumbling an almost unintelligible "it's so sad" until she was screaming it into my ear..... good times.

I loved this weirdo movie when I was in middle school, I still occasionally listen to the music and the visuals are super cool. Plus you gotta love a suprise Jack the Ripper scene, because if I had a nickel for every time that's happened I'd have two nickels, which it's really really weird that it happened twice.

this has been my favorite movie for about 5 years now and im really glad more people are hearing about it. if you truly want more clarification on certain things, i recommend reading the book!! it doesn’t make everything make sense (it was made by the leader of an eccentric french rock band… let’s be serious), but you learn a lot more of the backstory. i truly believe this movie could’ve been so much better with more runtime. the music and visuals, like you said, are absolutely amazing though

I watched this for the first time when I was like 5-6 and I fell in love with everything to the art to the music their voices stayed in my memory for years. For a while I thought it was something made up in my mind from when I was little but then I finally found it on CZcams and immediately recognized it and then rewatched it 5x a day 💀
