I would love to know how should we jab this style
@@rwindolat2346 flicker jab maybe?
I’d rather have someone hit me in the shoulder than hit me in the head any day.
I am a beginning, recreational boxer and the only thing I kind of noticed is that if someone hits me in the hand that is up protecting my head, it jars me almost as much as if they had hit me directly on the head. So, I am still trying to figure that one out.
Could all go wrong if deployed incorrectly.
Tony Jeffries: You white foreign immigrants always copy and steal everything from Black people
My uncle fought Roy back in the 80s for a spot on the Olympic team. My uncle said the way he uses his shoulder as a shield was genius.
That’s awesome.. bet he has some cool stories
wow , thanks for message Thunda,. Do you box as well mate?
Who won? Also my friend trains under Roy.
@@Tony_Jeffries I did junior golden gloves age 7-10, but being a switchable southpaw finding a proper coach was difficult back then after my uncle went into the service. I switched to Krav Maga about 20yrs ago after doing cross training Israeli Special Service while in the army. I've maintained my boxing abilities bu have a tendency to lean into Krav while in a clinch out of habit.
@@jwill5892 Roy won by TKO if I remember correctly. Roy is one of the nicest guys in boxing and he was back then too. One mistake by my uncle was all it took. He made me watch that tape for months until I could come up with a "fix" to the misstep he made.
I LOVE how u explain everything, u’re a really good trainer
Thank you 🙏🏼 means alot
@@Tony_Jeffries tony what happens if they throw the other hook
😂😂😂😂😂😂@@Movieclipscenes386
It’s a really great defensive style
Yes it is, check this out mate: czcams.com/video/VJiMWKgIe9s/video.html
This was Sean Strickland entire training camp
And that's why Tony Jeffries is the best coach in our solar system
Nah deans training camp was wrestling the entire time
this stance is called the sword and shield stance in the old karate
JAMES "LIGHTS OUT" TONEY
amazing master of the Philly Shell,
Who here after Sean Strickland win by this style ?
I belong to Floyd Mayweather Senior’s boxing club south of Grand Rapids Michigan, Kalamazoo boxing Academy I was a state open Michigan Golden Globe champion and used to spar with Floyd and up-and-coming pro at the time 1977 1978. We were both welterweights believe it or not he would put his own 10 oz gloves on to spar with me in my 16 ounce training gloves. Gotta love the Mayweather’s!😂But it always helped my hand speed as well
I was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Pontiac, Michigan
how was that like
Who asked?
It’s very effective and looks flashy, but it’s NOT meant for everybody
Philly shell requires tremendous reflexes and foot work to work beyond novices as opponents. Once you start fighting real professionals, you also have to be able to read body language masterfully to anticipate your opponent. Only then can you capitalize fully on the full vision the Philly shell allows you.
How long do u think it would take
@@jarianstone3030 How long would what take? Sorry, didnt undertstand the question.
@@seletarroots3258 oh my bad, how long u think it would take to master Philly shell
@@jarianstone3030
How long to master the Philly shell? That is not possible for me to answer. But I think a good 10 years of technical training, sparring, coordination exercises focusing on footwork, conditioning with emphasis on core strength and a of course natural born talent would make you good enough to compete with the Philly shell stance in professional boxing earning a living off of it. This essentially means that you would train for it but while doing so, competing or other forms of regular combat would be done with more traditional stances but perhaps you would after 2-3 years of training for Philly start employing it in a few early rounds when you are fresh. Then switch to traditional after the first couple of rounds of Philly, just to try it out and slowly ease or transition into it full time.
Philly looks great on people like Floyd or James Toney. And they really use it to their advantage. It´s basically what makes them Money Floyd or Lights Out Toney. But they have God given natural talent and both train like mad men. There is a very clear reason why Philly is not used as a standard because if you make a mistake it is unforgiving. You will get knocked down and possibly out if you fight just an average opponent. Traditional stances are much more forgiving to mistakes as well as to position you for offensive action and hence does not require as much of the fighter.
@@seletarroots3258 thank you bro I appreciate u taking ur time to answer this man, I learnt a lot from this 🙌❤️
THIS IS UNDERRATED!!! i tried this against a friend in sparring and with a little head movement you will be UNSTOPPABLE
THANK YOU "JEFFRIES"!!👍👍
@Tony Jeffries
Hey I’m a boxer (I’m 13) but I hurt my foot badly and I’ve had to stop boxing for a session. It’s sad, I watch you every time I see you. I look up to you.
My foot is better now (kinda) so I can go back to boxing :) 🥊 anyway.
Thanks for reading this all the way. If you did you’re a legend.
Thanks!
Randall Cobb had a good Philly shell
Love your vidz, very informative. I'm 44, 6'3" 240lbs. Trying to learn correct boxing. Always loved it, I'm a southpaw & alot of my buddies doesn't want to box with me. Thank you for all the great info
I trained under Victor valle Jr, who trained Oleg Maskayev out of the bx. Philly shell was definitely a style that many sub-styles were built off of as the ease of movement and visibility carries fighters further than holding hands up round after round. It's just common sense. Which uses less energy, which has more intertia. Find similar application in wing Chun, intercept and deflect.
Thank you for this. Really appreciate your content.
This is also good for when your hands are down and your drained, just try your best to use your shoudlers to block the punches, also try to use the stepback when your tired
how to protect parry block against uppercut
Since you mentioned him, and and that dude has just just totally amazed me so many times,,,, but "prime" Roy Jones, best fighter I've ever seen. I saw him try to get the ref to stop a fight one night, because he's just wearing the dude out, ref says "no",,, Roy steps in and throws the 4 piece, fight over. That was the fight when he played a charity basketball game that day,,,, and then defended his title that night. Really like your channel man
Bryant Brannon was the opponent, 2nd round KO. Roy was a monster
I luv this style.
Just looks next level to me.
Thanks for uploading this video 😊
You are really legend bro
You gotta love Tony ...there is no choice.
Thx for great content Tony !!!!!
Oh very useful
Thanks for that
I will practice and I'll have a great combat
Good martial arts... I'm surprised people doesn't speak about Philly shell. It works well with front and round house kici
Another great master of this technique is Andre Ward.. Theres a slow mo clip of him using it to block and counter the exact combos you just done
Please teach more about this style, i like it.
SS - the Strickland Shell 👑
Nice video my friend you really now what you talking about. They are two of my favourite boxers, especially Roy
I find also the philly shell a very useaful guard, as you said. It is nice for folks with big shoulders and good reflexes.
George Foreman used that same defense when he was older and I remember watching and wondering how he got away with it.
Quick sharp .. & it’s easy to understand stand 🤜🏾💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
I prefer textbook cause with Philly Shell its hard to counter punch
Tony i got everything ur saying man but that wall is just awesome
Excellent technique
That mural 🔥
Floyd Mayweather’s Philly Shell defense made Canelo target shoulders now with his power overhand.
Technically any cross armed guard is the Philly Shell. Floyd utilizes his version.
The bit you left out is you need incredible reflexes 😂
I have a hard time defending body shots and i was thinking I should pick up a new technique to better my defense
What about uppercuts and over hands? 🤔
AWESOME!!
Sean Strickland is why im here to learn about this
James Toney is my favorite shell fighter !
Same here
James himself doesnt call it the philly shell, he says philly shell is for people who like to get beat up alot, he simply calls it the shoulder roll, but he even admitted he used to get whooped on every day trying to perfect it in sparring
James also said the main difference in his style is balls, he doesnt take many steps back or even cut many angles, sure he can and will do it but james can stand right in your face toe to toe and dodge/counter everything when hes on point
Fast hands fast reflexes to be great at this style best place to get it right in the gym James my favourite also he had a tremendous career never got stopped once.
Tony how are you gonna not mention the best, nicolino locche
Hey thanks man keeps the video going we love it❤
Thanks, will do mate!

@@Tony_Jeffries ye i will watch it bro❤️
Its a really great style but it requires practice and good fundamentals because you need to switch to classic or high guard from time to time in dangerous situations or to mix things up. If you try to use the shell round after round your opponent will suddenly time you
Great reaction should be applied as well, have you watched this Ricardo? czcams.com/video/VJiMWKgIe9s/video.html
Of cause I watch all of your videos great content 👍🏼
I'd love to see more in depth stuff, it seems like the videos are covering the same things again and again and again
Awesome 👍 thanks

Nice.
Hey Tony any advice for beginners wanting to start Boxing/MMA that are hesitant to joining a gym?
Hi couch..Put video for peek a book style
Closing the guard for hooks open the body, what about feints?
Beginner question here. Does the low lead hand make a big difference on jabs? Seems like you can almost hide them better or attack the body because you are literally right there as is. Seems like a cool style but super tough to pull off
Yea I’ve definitely noticed this with floyd
James Tony was one of the best at the Philly Shell
Do you have a full tutorial on this?
Was the Philly Shell used by Smokin Joe too? Kinda remember seeing something like that.
James Toney also used the style
James Toney was the real master of the shoulder rolling technique….
This is Philly shell not shoulder roll
One question..if we defend with our shoulders and if the opponent has great hand power than won't it screw our delts...love ur videos I always learn something new everytime...
I am Southpaw fighter with an exceptionally Hard Punch for even a southpaw, every time I fought a guy with this style I would work on to shatter their shoulder all that blocking give's a great target to The rotator cuff
@@teranaaa that's what I am worried about if u can't save ur shoulders than it would be hard for u to throw a punch with an injured shoulder..
Yeah, that's the problem as well. Need to build up that muscle and better reaction to avoid hitting the shoulders. Check this out mate: czcams.com/video/VJiMWKgIe9s/video.html
@@Tony_Jeffries thanks man for replying I really needed to know how to protect my body so I don't damaged my body..I have already damaged my lumbar and neck while practicing kickboxing and weight training now its been like four years but I haven't still recovered fully so I was worried a bit but that video cleared it all...
@@metalinbrains9850 it's best to know a great many styles boxing is a smart minded game
It’s funny how everyone hated Floyd’s guys yet they all want to copy him because let’s be honest, the Philly shell defense is popular today because of him
Canelo Alvarez broke that Philly Shell move when Caleb Plant tried to use it, thinking he could do the same as Mayweather. Lmao
Because he targeted his shoulder after having experience with Floyd, most people aim for the face so the shoulder takes the punch off course, reducing the force. I don't know why fighters don't target the arms more often, if he can't keep his arms up he's done
Mayweather Senior used Philly Shell but Chavez showed how it can be penetrated.
And canelo break plant body
Easily the best boxing tutorial channel on CZcams
I tried this but if find it really difficult to counter with this style. The fact that I'm not that tall doesn't help with that.
I tried it in my last sparring....didn't work 😅
Also D’Sean Strickland!
What if he comes with a right hook or overhand on the uncovered part
Any good defensive and flowing styles?
I love this guy
In street fight what's is the best style peek aboo or this style
How would you defend against a right hook to the head with Philly shell?
But how do you defend the right hook. Please explain
Jeff if Mayweather fights Crawford, who will win??Thanks
I tried it a couple times sparring kickboxing, and it’s pretty good defensively but it kills my jab since my lead hand is so low. It’s hard to get it off without telegraphing it. I’m not very good lol, but how would you throw the jab from that stance?
Can you please explain how to break the Philly shell ? I have seen some video of changing the angles and breaking in. But can you pls demonstrate that technique?
Watch sugar Ray v floyd senior sugar shows how to beat the philly shell.
People hate on floyd a lot but I adored watching him
Nice! How about his boxing style? what do you think mate
@@Tony_Jeffries don’t think he could have gone undefeated with anything other than that style , more importantly what’s your opinion on it haha ?
James Tony was great at it
Thanks for sharing mate
Love the video thank you so much!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Almost like sword and shield
who is floyd meweather?
Only problem is I can’t jab properly
All my losses were to body shots so I should’ve used this style
My question is how do you respond with a 1-2 while not compromising your defensive position? I know you can flick the jab but how do you implement a power jab while maintaining your defense?
And how do you throw that jab without telegraphing?
Power can be added to jab by bending and stepping forward.
@@Fernando-jy6gq by bending do you mean a slip?
I mean like Mayweather throws a jab. Taking a small step forward with lead foot landing it as the same time as the punch.
Footwork is the key mate, but check this out: czcams.com/video/Xy54UGeUDyM/video.html -- this might help answer your question.

Does that work without gloves ?
HELL YEAH SAUL!
it's always impressive to see , and satisfying, but don't this at gym it's harder to do than it looks x)
Takes time and practice ma friend, have you watched this ? czcams.com/video/VJiMWKgIe9s/video.html
Can you use in a street fight
Best counter the over hand
Ay, I heard about your Boxing career, It ended in 2012, I dont meant to be rude but what was the reason for it to end pretty early?
what about an uppercut?
That stance has been popular for decades now lol but ok Tony
But how do you counter this style ?
Im just here for the “overhand punch will get through” comments 😆😆
My gut tells me this is not a great defense in a bare knuckle fight. I believe the size of boxing gloves are what allows the shoulder to be so effective. A bare fist is gonna catch you or sneak between the "cracks".
The best boxing style at all times
Here because of Sean Strickland
