- Before fronting the 1970's pop music group, Starland Vocal Band with Margot Chapman and Jon Carroll, Bill and Taffy Danoff had a hand in writing(they'd already written Country Roads prior to meeting John Denver) and then co-writing (a new 2nd verse) one of John Denver's biggest hits, Take Me Home Country Roads.

I prefer hearing the songwriter's rendition of their own songs, wish they'd recorded this for an album.
Take Me Home Country Roads was co-written by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert and John Denver
Bill and Taffy were close friends and associates of Denver's and provided backup vocals on his early albums as well as writing or co-writing songs with John that he recorded over the years.
Bill and Taffy Danoff started in the mid sixties as Fat City, then recorded as Bill and Taffy in the early 1970's, and then fronted Starland Vocal Band from the mid 1970's to early 1980's. - Hudba
The perfect song to sing after your team wins a game! Let’s Go Mountaineers!!!!
Thank you "let's go,Mountaineers "!!!
Outstanding
Thanks Stan
Nice piece of pop music history. That said, John Denver’s is the best version, I think.
Agree, but since we wrote it, it was only natural that we performed it, and it was John Denver with Fat City (us) who recorded the hit version.
Wonderful guys. My kiwi kids learned to sing this today for a young teacher who lost a US aunty. Its an iconic song to quite a few generations. love toyou both.
This couple is awesome
Thanks, that's us performing the song we wrote with a bit of help from John Denver.
lovely
Thanks, appreciate it
Awesome! I miss Bill and Taffy and Starland Vocal Band!
❤
The harmony is beautiful! Gives me goosebumps. Thank you for uploading this.
Thank you Bill and Taffy! I was in the Navy stationed at the Pentgon when you all were singing this at the Cellar Door for the first time....
and I'm from West Virginia. My heart beats a little faster every time I hear it still. So many memories of the Vietnam War...demonstrations...
hippies....Georgetown...and West Virginia.
Showing this to Bill right now, he just said this to me earlier today "the listener and the hearer are what makes the music "
@@starlandandmore A back-porch musician here....in West Virginia, we always say, It's not how good you play, it's how good you feel. Bill, Taffy and John will always have a piece of my heart
I showed your post to Bill yesterday, he's dealing with the loss of his friend Mark Russell who passed away yesterday, I hope he'll get back to us, in the meantime, I know for a fact that He appreciates hearing from you.
@@starlandandmore Is he still in the Washington area? I'd love to meet him sometime when I'm there.
@@USNAVDC yes, he's still there, he taught a music writing class at Georgetown University for awhile, he's retired but still finds time to answer a few fan questions and the occasional interview and he and Taffy have been so supportive of our channel here, I wanted to find a way for their music to still reach fans, old and new, and so far it's working, I'm not sure how you might arrange a get together, we have a companion Facebook group that Bill,Taffy and Jon are in, if you're on Facebook, the link is in our about section.
Great song! Thanks for sharing. I saw a video in which Bill Danoff explains that he had never been to WV before he wrote that song. Instead, he explained that a group from WV who regularly attended their shows gave him ideas for the song. Cool story.
We have Bill Danoff's version here with the original 2nd verse
@@starlandandmore found it thanks!
Taffy is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.
Taffy says "aww, thank you so much "
After I showed her your comment.
Yes.
Yes! Thank you! sounds great!
Our version of our song, thanks
Neat version!
It's always a treat to hear a song performed by the songwriters
Yes - so many of the tunes on my iPod are original versions of songs that everyone else thinks are covers......😂
The true songwriters
My favorite version - love all of the photos!
Thank you for writing such a beautiful song. I still get a lump in my throat everytime I hear it. Just curious, how do you feel when you play it, or hear someone else cover it?
A sense of pride, sadness for the loss of a friend (Denver) and it's a blessing to hear anyone else perform it.
The Petersons just posted an incredible bluegrass cover of this on their channel.
Thank you kindly for, sharing it with Bill Danoff right now
Shear genius, simple, basic, original, America in every way.
Thank you kindly
I read john only wrote one line for this song. Can anyone tell me which line was his? Btw.. recently retired and learning guitar now. I will have country roads down soon!😊
If Memory serves, it was " all my memories ",he'd wanted "all of my memories ",it just didn't fit, he finally used all 4 words in his song " All Of My Memories " on his Aerie album,we had a different 2nd verse than the recording.

The original version, we were originally aiming for Johnny Cash to record it.
My last band did a cover of Jason & The Scorchers’ cover of this great song. My voice (drummer singing high harmonies) was a bit shot that night, so a few notes were missed. czcams.com/video/cS0wdNPrRAI/video.html
We originally wrote this song with Johnny Cash in mind with the alternate 2nd verse, but John heard it first and ask us to write a different 2nd verse and the rest is history.
