- Hello. I acquired this sled early in 2021. I bought it from the original owner who is now 94. I plan on going back once it runs to give her a ride on it once again. I gave a good try to start it but no success. Later revisited it and cannot get it started. I'm currently mentally troubleshooting it and will post a video when I get back to the machine. Thanks for watching! Kevn on 4 Wheels

First thing to do after confirming spark, take carbs OFF and completely disassemble and clean them including the Jets to ensure trouble-free running if it's been setting for more than a few years. A little hint, after you clean the carbs and ensure Spark dump just a little bit of mixed gas down each spark plug hole before you pull start 500 times, lol, that will get it firing, I've done it for years and it doesn't hurt the motor.
Thanks! I went way overboard on the fuel
What a beautiful sled.
Thank you! I can’t wait to bring it back to its glory
and this is how not to restart an old sled thanks for the video
You’re welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed it
Right!!!
I'd say the amount of fuel you poured down the cylinders you flooded it out ....next time just stick with spraying fuel in the carbs
I got over zealous. Ha ha
I also cant believe how much fluid you put down those cylinders, you are lucky you didnt try to start it until months later or you would have hydrolocked it 100%
I was 1% away from hydro locking it
Lot of good suggestions here, your in tank fuel line will surly be disintegrated by now. Gonna have to replace that in tank line.
Float bowls will only receive fuel from the fuel line.
I never even thought about that. It’s always been filled to the top. I’ll have to address that. Thanks!
You have quite a bit of marvel mystery oil in there. IMO.
Take the plugs out…..and dump some of that engineered fuel in there….then with the plugs out….crank it.
Put the plugs back in….and take a squirt bottle of engineered fuel…..and spritz it into the carbs, with the slides open.
With the compression, and spark you, have it will start.
For a little while…
If it doesn’t continue to run,
1. Do you have enough gas in the tank?
2. While it was running, did you notice fuel being pumped through the lines? Might be fuel pump .
3. Gas in tank, yes…gas being pumped..yes….clean the carburetors. Take the float bowls off and clean out the float needle and seat, and. Jets.
Should run…..cool old sled.
Thanks for the tips! I'll do all of that. I hope to get back to it in the next few weeks. Last part of the video it was 80 degrees. Now its 15 out. Ha ha
You pour way too much things down the cylinders and into the carbs! Flooded engines don't run right away. Plus without the airbox on, it could backfire and set the whole sled on fire. I learned that the hard way after fully restoring a sled. Only the new skis were left.
Ha ha. Yikes. Thankfully I didn’t learn that hard of a way but definitely a good learning experience for me
That busted plastic thing under the dash was the choke
Thanks! I got a used one being delivered this week. Hoping that helps!
Hold the dang throttle open and yank on it dang
I tried that a few dozen times off camera. Edited out my wheezing and huffing. Ha ha.
You can remove the drain plugs on the exhaust side of the engine under the exhaust if you think it is hydrolocked. That cable sticking out is the choke cable. it goes in the hole in the console
Thanks! I just got a new choke cable. Going to throw that on and see if that helps!
Hello. I wish I remembered your comment yesterday. I completely forgot. The drain plugs were the ticket. I thought it was a crack case oil drain but ended up draining gas. Do you know it has chain case oil or crank case oil? I can’t find a dip stick anywhere. Thanks!!
@@kevinon4wheels it’s a 2 stroke, so mixed gas and no crankcase oil.
@@VincesDIYs thank you
I broken fee up oil in cylinder s remove the belt and a pipe wrench on the clutch and pull their not really frozen . Just stuck.. the cly are c chrome it helps . Do not use stater fluid or anything else it will wash them oil off parts. I found it not ran for a long time
It ok to pre mix gas in the tank . Unli u the oil pump work s all ways check this . If u don't mmm u can say junk
Thanks for the tips! I'll put them to use next time I get out there
Flooded. But I had an Enticer that had spark, but replaced the coil (after some tough arm work) and it fired up and has run since
Thanks! I tried it so many different ways before and after dumping fuel in but could not get it to fire. May have to look into the coil!
that sled is really good shape seat looks almost like new . I'm pretty sure this sled was stored in a garage it hall life. even hood paint has a shine to it a little buffing it would look even better
Thank you. Yes in a barn. Thankfully wasn’t under a tarp in the backyard for 30 years
@@kevinon4wheels yes if it was outside it sure wouldnt look that good . i never keep my sled outside open to weather.. it in garage or Portable Car Canopy thing
That is not a 600. There was never an Indy Trail 600. That one is actually only a 440. In around 1985, Polaris upsized the Indy Trail engine to 488 cc. But the first couple or so model years, they were 440 cc (actually 432 cc to be exact)
Thank you! I didn’t know that. Great info
Hello. I finally found the plate. Yep not a 600 at all. It’s a 433 cc made in Japan. Ha ha
I would take the carbs off and give them a good cleaning and put a new choke cable on it. First, you might want to dry out the cylinders a bit since there is fuel, marble oil etc in there lol
Thanks! I know it will run so a good carb cleaning is definitely not going to hurt. Same for the choke cable
also, you should spray the bogies, and suspension….or grease it if it has fittings, and the primary shaft….while your at it….hit the piston to your brake master cylinder, on the outside, and if it’s dry inside also….let. That soak, then whack it gently to get it moving….brake fluid and bleed.
Grease the slides on the suspension and track with some lithium grease.
You can get a syringe and some 90 wt….and poke those bogie bearings….
A couple drops turns the tar back to grease, and the track will move freely.
Why?
Because when you put power to a seized track, you have a good chance of breaking your plastic drive cogs. And they are a bitch to change.
Great advice! Last thing I want to is grenade the driveline after all the work on the engine. Ha ha
Hello! Got part 2 done and part 3 is going to include all your advice. Thanks!
@@kevinon4wheels great, it will really be fast then 😀😀
Pretty sure DG had an exhaust for the 440/488cc fan cooled, INDY Trail SP sleds. Find one of those after getting it running again, make the older TXL and at the time contemporary Indy 400 liquid sleds look stupid running down tight twisty woods trails. The early “Trails” piped would run pretty good against the first of the 440/500 liquids on a lake and run away in the woods
Thanks! It’s a blast
My uncle had this same model sled and had that dg pipe on his
Sled and bike 2 stroke engine s a very big chain say engine s. Just listen to us pro s what we just said it will go.i been working on sledi and bike s and more at the age of 5 years old.
Clean the carbs make sure it’s getting fuel fix that choke cable and NEVER USE STARTING FLUID ON A SNOWMOBILE
Nice video 👍. Tru fuel is not good for old sleds.
Thank you! Good learning experience. What does the tru fuel do? The octane too high or the oil not good?
@@kevinon4wheels eats the metal. It's best to just use gas and two cycle oil
@@mike.4277 good to know. Thanks!!
40:00 hard to pull? You have so much oil, cleaner etc inside the cylinders and crankcase, it’s hydro locking…….crank it with the plugs out, and get that blown out of there.
Put a teaspoon of fuel down the cylinders , put in plugs…..and it will start.
Thanks! I have revisit it soon and give it another shot. Never enough time!
@@kevinon4wheels great video, love to see those old sleds resurrected 😀😀
wow is that only 400+ miles? or KM ?
Miles. Pretty good!
Hi great video did you get it to run?
Thank you! There is good news and I hope to have a video up soon with the results!
If you can see spark, there's enough spark. Drain everything out of the crankcase, dry the plugs, clean the carbs well.... Look for a tutorial online. Round slide mikunis and that engine practically run with no effort. Based on your prior dosage, less fuel in the cylinders is more. I think you're close.
Thanks! I’ll give it a try. I feel it coming
Cross country 600? That year a trail had a 440 fan. This is painful to watch. No way it will start with that much liquid poured in there. The carbs will have to come apart after 35 years.
Carbs on the list too. Judging by the fuel drawn from the tank, the carbs are going to look like Jello. B I apologize: I’m a sadist when it comes to this! Ha ha
I also found the plate and it’s the trail 440 (433 cc). You’re right.
It was hard to watch you screw up. Drain the bowls and put 1/4 of that fuel down the plug holes. NOT a ‘weak’ spark
It was hard for everybody to watch including me. But learned a lot!
You arent the most graceful person when working on this sled, wow
I’m surprised it didn’t crack in half
Don't use carb cleaner to start 2 stroke .washes the oil off the Pistons and more. Mixed gas in a oil can and prim the carbs . It it doesn't start let sit. Or some have drain plus u just look. On a 2 stroke if the crank case is of gas or whatever will not run I would had it running.
Not a 600😂
440 twin! Not sure where that manual came from. ha ha
@@kevinon4wheelsright on no worries. Did you ever ride it
