He was abused in training...called vile names and teased over and over. He touched no weapon. He carried a med kit, a red cross on his helmet. He saved the lives of so so many men. This is real Christ like example. If he'd have been sent out of the military, so many men would've died alone on that ridge never to return home.

@@AnnaLVajda during the time the idea in america was you were fighting tyranny for freedom. Remember the united states was attacked. And boys of fighting age who refused to fight back were seen as cowards undeserving of their freedom that so many had died for before. Not willing to shoot the people who wanted to kill him and take his freedom was seen as weakness. Their opinion greatly changed when they saw what he was willing to do for them and his country. So much so that the lieutenant personally asked doss on his sabbath if he would go up on the ridge again with the few remaining men that were with him at the start of the attack that could still fight. They wouldnt go back up without him. And he went.

@@ExpressoBean0 I’m glad to see the younger generation being interested in the actions of our war heroes in world war 2. I met a man named Glenn D. Frazier handing out his book “hell’s guest” detailing his time in service in WW2 at the USS Alabama. He was there for the attack on Pearl Harbor and became a prisoner of war to the Japanese. His book was so inspiring to me and got me interested in WW2 at the age of 12. Unfortunately Glenn died in 2018 but all proceeds from his book continue to go to his family. I would highly recommend picking up a copy of Hell’s Guest and giving it a read or two.

Only one was invited from each war, and that individual had to be voted to attend by his fellow CMH recipients. Doss was unanimously voted by all his fellow WW2 CMH recipients. Seeing him in real life on this old TV show let's us see just how mild-mannered and humble this superman really was. I was surprised to hear that he spent 5 years in a VA hospital with TB , had a lung and 4 ribs removed, and had a 90% VA disability rating. He said after the war that he had Doss in his gun sights numerous times during the battle, intent on killing him as he was aiding the injured... and he claims that every time he went to fire, his gun had an issue of one sort or another - misfire, faulty round in the chamber or simply did not work for some unknown reason.
