  • Desmond Doss, who didn't want to fire a gun and kill, also wanted to be of service to his country during the Second World War. By persevering faith, he endured hatred and bullying from his fellow soldiers and ultimately became a hero to them by saving their lives.
📺 In this Episode: Desmond Doss made a name for himself - by saving lives. He refused to bear arms or carry a weapon - in the midst of World War 2 under constant enemy fire. He was unwilling to take a life or even so much as touch a weapon. He did however say that he would be proud to serve his country as an army medic if they would let him. He was the conscientious objector who chose to fight - fight in a way that would help people. He had the wild idea that he could serve his country at war and also obey the command: "Thou shalt not kill."

That is why the movie did not include how, on the last assault, he stepped on a grenade to save the lives of the men he was with, and it shattered his legs. That is the condition he was in when he gave up his stretcher for another man. Then he got shot in the arm while waiting to be fetched. He used a rifle as a crutch to crawl 300 meters to an aid station.

    What a warrior of God.
For those who don’t know, Desmond Doss was a Seventh Day Adventist and was a big believer in observing the Saturday Sabbath. He would not labour or work on any Sabbath, no matter what. He would obey God’s Commands rather than man.
In fact, the day Doss saved and rescued those 75 men from the ridge, was the Sabbath, May 5 1945. He would have been working harder than ever, but he stuck true to Gods word and pointed out Matthew 12:12.
With all that being said, yes I believe the Sabbath is important. But what is most important, is that we have a strong faith for God and are hungry to learn more from his word.
    God Bless.

+John: He was all you say he was and more. But realize that going to war as a medic is basically just supporting a war effort. I came from a long line of folks who refused to go to war , even with threats of being "hung tomorrow morning".. I think if I got out on a battlefield, and it came to it, I would easily take up a rifle. Because I am there supporting a war effort, so what the heck.
But hey, this is a real hero, and a man to be respected and emulated, just as a bomber pilot in WW2, I knew as a kid, who was from nonresistant religious people, made his decision, an agonizing decision, btw, and went to war. I ended up respecting this man more than the whole load of self righteous strutting hypocrits who were his brethren in the church he was seen at, quietly sitting there on the back benches for the rest of his life, clear up into 2000s.

I first learned of Desmond Doss in 1969. I attended a Seventh Day Adventist school that one year. In the library at the back of the classroom was a book titled "The Unlikeliest Hero". It was the story of Mr. Doss and his experiences during the war. I was indeed moved by his faith and convictions. The religion he followed was the Adventists and they are a very strict Christian order. Saturday is the sabbath and the diet is strict. No pork, shellfish, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, etc. I can see how the desire not to kill another man was so deeply embedded in his beliefs. God definitely had a hand in shielding him that day. A true hero the likes of which we may never see again.

I confess I am a screaming Agnostic. Christened Catholic, never Confirmed. I have no time for religion, no place for it. I watched the Gibson movie (which was panned terribly by critics) , thought it was a good "war movie" but was I fascinated by Doss. A guy like him usually lasts the first bullet in a firefight. Next to useless, professes a "spiritual Medic" role, helping as a Medic might without the application of first aid. I will tell you that I spent months educating myself about Doss, his denomination in the Christian Church and his undisputed real life achievements on the battlefield by eye witness accounts and military records. Again I am not a religious man, but I am not an ignorant. I believe Doss was a vessel , a conduit granted to the rarest few to whatever power he prayed. It's practically unfathomable that a man of flesh and blood could survive for so long, with scant concern for his own safety in an environment of unbelievable combat mortality. True he was severely injured but he had accomplished what he had set out to do... it's beyond remarkable.

Desmond Doss was as heroic as they come and was one of a kind. His God-given unwavering faith was his sword and his shield. He was a true inspiration and testament to the power of faith and prayer.

Desmond's grave was honored today with a wreath during Wreaths Across America at Chattanooga National Cemetery. We honor all MOH recipients at CNC every year.

The problem I had with the movie Hacksaw Ridge, was that they somehow portrayed that Doss didn't earn the respect of his peers until Okinawa. In actuality Doss had established himself as a respected corpsman was during the 25-mile march his unit had to make during training. He also had shown his worth during the Battle of Guam in 1944.

*Medic. Doss was in the Army. Other than that, you're completely right.

    What a fantastic presentation.
It treats Desmond’s reverence for the Word of God, and his faith in Jesus quite honorably.
