Fishing With The FENWICK EAGLE Ultralight Rod! [First Impressions]

  • In a recent video, I talked about how I plan to pick up numerous ultralight rods and make videos using them. Well, here we go again! This ultralight setup happens to be the Fenwick Eagle 5'6 Ultralight rod. It is a Moderate action which was a bit new to me. I usually fish with Fast action ultra light setups so it was definitely a different feeling using this.
    Check Out This Rod: amzn.to/3fX5457
    Overall, I feel like this rod is pretty solid. I wouldn't really consider this rod a budget-friendly option but I also wouldn't consider it expensive. I paid a bit less than $80 which I would consider a mid-price range. Personally I think that cost is justified with the high quality cork grip and nice reel seat. Very comfortable setup to fish with.
    I think this rod will especially be good for tossing little spinners and other small treble hooked baits. Because of the moderate action, this rod really flexes deep into the blank. Pairing that up with trebles would help soften the hookset and land more fish. I would consider this an awesome ultralight trout setup for that very reason.

    I have that exact same rod/reel set up. I use if for cutthroat trout and Kokanee in the mountains of Idaho. I've caught 18" trout on that rod and it handled it like a dream!! UltraLite for life!

    I know nothing of the Eagle, but have fallen in love with the light power HMG. I tend to reach for it more these days than my ultralight's. I prefer the reel seat and longer handle, and it casts amazing. It helped me net a pair of doozies this weekend.

    Great little rod for a moderate price. For some applications I think a moderate action can come in handy. Sometimes I like a moderate action UL when throwing those spinners with treble hooks. Always fun and a great time hanging out with you on the water Ethan 💧😀 LOL, I'm starting to see a pattern that you like to throw things at your friends.

    Ethan buddy, your ultralight rods tend to be 5' 6". It's been my experience that longer rods, in the 6' 6" or 7' range, offer more advantages. You can cast light lures farther for sure, and the length also helps with hook sets. Also, I believe the longer length with all of that flex helps fight the mondos you might hook on your light line. Of course I grew up fishing steelhead on 8' and 9' rods, so a 7' rods feel like an average length to me.

    • @adamkaralus5468
      @adamkaralus5468 Před 3 lety +3

      Agree there. I fish a 13’ ML for steelhead and feel confident handling 25-28” fish on 4-6# test but only because of the long rod. The slower the better

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před 3 lety +10

      Yeah it’s all about personal preference and what you’re targeting! I love the shorter rods because I tend to be tossing my Mule Jigs around in search of panfish and small bass. The longer rods feel wonky when sidearming from a kayak. If I was float fishing for trout and had some open casting area, I’d for sure go longer! Pros and cons to each, but I can assure you that more ultralight rods are going to be purchased lol so maybe I’ll get a 7’ soon

    • @backwoodsadventures9661
      @backwoodsadventures9661 Před 2 lety +4

      For years I’ve fished for trout and only used rods that were within the 7 ‘ range. I looked down on rods any shorter than that. Well now that I’ve been mainly kayak fishing. My attitude sure has changed. Half of my losses are actually due to long length of the rods and struggling to net them. So now I’m actually in the market for shorter rods

    Im a BFS/Ultra Light frantic its truly is a blast fishing when you just cant horse a fish in. St. Croix makes some real nice Ultra light rods. My go to BFS bass rod is a Mastercraft Speed Style BFS. Only downside is BFS can get $$$. Ultra light spinning is the way to go if you are ready to get in to ultra light fishing. As long as you learn to work your drag you can get some nice monsters on light gear.

    I use this rod in combination with a 1000 size Regal. You are correct that this is a true UL rod. IMO it is a perfect UL rod. I use it for panfish, especially Redbreast and Bluegill on the Shenandoah River. I have another, older UL rod that served me well for probably 25 years, but this rod is such a pleasure to use it's hard for me to take any other UL setup.
    It will also handle 1-2lb Largemouth and Smallmouth just fine.

      Tried out my UltraLight for the first time, this past weekend. It was perfect for catching a ton of bluegill, and other sunfish, although it can catch other, larger, fish. I used 4 lb mono, which was the perfect line to enjoy the fight that even small bluegill can put up. The only issue was the I had to add a bullet weight, because the wind was strong, and was playing havoc with the line, prior to adding the weight. Definitely glad I bought it. It won't take the place of my medium, medium-heavy, and heavy rods, but it isn't supposed to. "The right rod for the right situation."

    I've used this exact fenwick rod for the better part of two years and have caught plenty of 2-3+lb bass and pickerel with no issue. Typical day on the river is 15-20 small mouth around 1.5-3lb. I've fished off short bridges and the rod will hold a 2+lb pickerel shaking through mid air no problems. Definitely good for anything under 6-7lb I'd say if you aren't trying to pick it up out of the water without a net

      That makes a lot of sense. I personally haven't had any issues with faster rods with my line but I could totally see how on a bigger fish, that moderate action could take a lot of pressure off of the line. Good callout Ron :)

I use everything from trout magnets , roostertails and everything rebel makes. I've caught a few solid 3lb largemouths with trout magnets .They have never swallowed it though. Always right in the lip . Anyways.....I may try something new this year , but there's nothing I don't like about my Fenwick other than the color. It's the older gold Eagle.

      Hey there! If you are talking about multispecies ultralight fishing, I’d go with a 5’6 - 6’ UL rod and a size 1000 reel. I’d use 2lb trilene sensation monofilament.
      For reels, I suggest any Daiwa or Shimano in a price point you’re comfortable with. The higher priced reels tend to be lighter and have components that will last a lifetime.
      For rods, a Dobyns is definitely a solid choice for the price. I love mine! But another I am about to do a video on is the 13 fishing defy silver for about $50. I feel it’s a solid UL and doesn’t break the bank.
      Hope this helps! And thanks Micah for your input, hope you’re well buddy.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před 3 lety +3

      I like them both but for different reasons. The Okuma is solid for a sub $40 price point and is pretty versatile. This is higher quality and probably better for trout fishing but it also costs more. I’m still in the process of figuring out what I like most.
      Once I have a better idea, I’m going to do a big ultralight comparison video!

      The Donkey Tail Jr. was designed to be fished with the 1/80oz through 1/32oz Mule Jig. These jigs are currently out of stock but they will be back very soon! Otherwise, any jig that has a small enough hook. A slow fall is key to drawing bites. Upsize your jig when fishing deeper or in heavy wind.
