The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The power of The Beatles and Ray Charles
Imagine Ray Charles paying tribute to The Beatles!! Awesome as a possum with a blossom!! :) :) :) :)
Only the brilliant Ray Charles could have covered this particular Beatles song without ruining it.
Aretha does a great job also.
What nonsense, a great song requires many interpretations.
ELO did a great job as well
Elvis clears...
Jesus Christ!!!!!!!!! It's amazing!!!!!!!!!
Only him can transform a Beatles' gold into a Ray's diamond 💎!!
What a genius, what a maestro!
I loved when he performed this
the genius that is Ray Charles
I wonder how the Beatles felt knowing that one of their heros was playing their songs
This is one of Paul McCartney's favorite covers.
John Lennon considered Ray Charles's interpretation as the definitive version of the song
Paul loved it
To be fair it’s way better than the Beatles
@@dickieetherton8846 lol no
Sin palabras! Que tiempos! Que artista! Que nostalgia! 😪
More passion than the Beatles.
One could argue this is the greatest Beatles song ever written, and this its finest interpretation.
The prior year Ray had success with a remake of "Yesterday", so he returned to the Lennon/McCartney catalog and chose this beauty. And again, it returned him to the top 40. The gospel touch really worked with this song. But I have to admit, the studio recording is preferable over this live version. Loved seeing it anyway.
I clicked like before I even watched the video because, well, Brother Ray!
Post more of Ray Charles , we need Yesterday
love Ray’s glasses
Genius Ray. Check out his country covers. Nothing like ‘em.
Ray Charles taking Eleanor Rigby to Soulsville.😁
I remember watching this back in '68. I was a senior in high school, playing in the jazz band. We also sampled from the Beatle's songbook.
Kudos to Ed for showcasing the myriad of black musical talent, during a very divisive time in America's history. I'd like to believe it was music, the one thing we all have in common regardless of race, creed, or color, that helped guide us to a place of greater tolerance and respect for one another, through the succeeding decades. I pray that we don't lose that.
Very beautiful version of this song by the genius mr ray charles
Wow this is cool.
that was an awesome performance i seen it before
Always liked this cover.....
Dios.. Cuanto TALENTO SE UNIERON EN ESTÁ PERSONA..
Excellent version of the famous Beatle's song. Ray sings it with feeling, as he does all songs he sings. Nice to hear and enjoy.
Nice perfomance!
Beautiful✨
I never heard this version but we'll done.
Brasil apreciando Ray Charles 😍🇧🇷
Such a-shame how much the BBC got rid of during this period, by taping over used tapes just to save money on buying new ones.
American television networks were guilty of this, too.
Bastards
Sensational! Global Superstar
Magistral!!!
Wowza!
That was awesome.
Thank you.
The Raeletts sound great on this. I believe this is Susaye Greene's first year. She's the shortest one and very talented: 5 octave voice.
Great !!
The Beatles Classic nicely done by the great Ray charles..
Tremendo~^
Que vídeo perfeito ✨
Who down votes Ray Charles?
All the lonely people...
Thank you❤️
Boy, those Marconi Mark VII cameras are goregeous.
Клёво!!
What a hot potato!!!😭😂😭😂🧐
..and this time all the glorious sound including amazing choir, I say wow!!!
ASÍ COMO JOSÉ FELICIANO RAY CHARLES INGRESÓ
AL PINÁCULO DE LA POPULARIDAD HOY CON ELEONOR
ELLOS CON SU TALENTO Y PRODUCTIVIDAD VENCIERON
Y LOS ADMIRAMOS A TRAVÉS DE TODO NUESTRO MUNDO.
…just w0w….!!!!!
Hahahaha genius

SSSSMMMOOOOOOOKKIINN 😅
Who would give this a thumbs down? Were you having a bad day? Did your wife beat you?
Good gawd, Brother Ray is bringing you the truth. Give yourself a moment of rest. We will be here to catch you. We will not let you fall.

Sheesh

This song is scary.
Ray out of his element here
Almost reminds me of Nina Simone’s delivery
Much better then the Beatles version
No
I would say different but still good. x
king charles 🕴🏿
Paul McCartney brought me here.
Sullivan, Douglas, Cavett, Donohue .... today ... kimmel.
😩 Sad but true ...
Strange choice of a song to perform live. Be interesting to see the full version but why choose this song?
Errrrrrr because he can
Why not ?
He covered this song and released it as a single in 1968. He even preformed it in his live album. It was common industry practice back then for artists to do cover songs with fresh new arrangements. If you scroll through the channel you’ll see how many artists came on Ed’s show to preform a cover song
@@aminsmith9657 thanks for the answer. Thats what i wanted to know. Shame the 2 comments before that couldnt provide that info.
Ray Charles imitating Joe Cocker singing Eleanor Rigby.
Almost every cover of the Beatles is disappointing because nobody can stand near the towering giant, Ray Charles however could see eye-to-eye with the Beatles... well if he could see.
Why was this guy always smiling? He can't see anything.
Being happy, smiling aren't dependent on vision but usually an emotional response to what we feel. Have you not thought of an event or person and smiled?
You answered your own question.
Aweful. Totally killed the melody, the strength of the song.
One of the Beatles' weaker songs; Charles improves it considerably.
@@Viracocha88 yeah, one of their weaker songs. ok, bro.
Bad song to begin with
@@connor_selby I agree.
@@connor_selby not true. i mean, compared to what? im afraid to ask, actually. but even if it were true, ray charles version sucks, as does most of his work. an overratec hack who ripped off the great black bluesman from the 20's and 30's.
I'm sorry but I just don't like this version. It just (in my opinion of course) doesn't fit the song.
Try Arethas
I agree. It's like he's singing to different music. Joe Cocker knew how to cover the Beatles.
@@aminsmith9657 Love this but not a fan of Aretha's, she plays it way too fast. You need the tempo to understand the drama and tragedy in the song. And she starts by saying "I'M ELEANOR RIGBY" which makes the song pointless.
@@TonyGPizza I have to STRONGLY disagree. Aretha’s Version is probably my favorite.
@@matthewalker It's an interpretation, not a cover. Thats why it sounds like a completely different song.
