- Captain Pete Norton was used to dealing with explosives. By the time he deployed to Iraq, he had spent more than 20 years working in bomb disposal. He was so well known for his cool head and unflappable nature he was given the nickname “Perfect Pete”.
But one night investigating the scene of a devastating IED attack outside Baghdad would change his life forever.
Pete was checking for other devices when he triggered a secondary IED, it functioned and almost killed him. But while he fought for his own life, he also fought for the safety of his team, giving them vital life-saving instructions and refusing to be evacuated until he was sure that everyone understood the danger.
Darren talks to Pete and two of his multinational team members, Nick and Chris from the FBI about the blast and how it has bound them together for the rest of their lives.

BIG NEWS: The Team behind Tea and Medals have released a brand new podcast over on the Forces TV CZcams Channel. Let us know what you think of 'Near Death' czcams.com/video/-DDHeGaTEq8/video.htmlsi=oeurFUeqtSQuZQzO
I'm retired RN. Much respect to Pete. And just the opposite to the MoD for not funding the artificial limbs. It would be a drop in the ocean in the defence budget. Again respect, walks out of A Levels, joins the Army, and is now doing a Phd. That's how the Armed Forces can bring you on.
A lot to digest here. That Peter Norton now lives the life he has forged for himself after such physical, mental and indeed emotional trauma and loss is testament to the man's character. That he once again found love and a 'new' family is, again, testament to his fortitude. (It is no less than he deserves, and worth more to him than any richly-deserved medal, I'm sure.) For me, the 'tell' of true heroism upon the day of his injury is not that he continued to brief his team as he himself was likely looking at a terminal set of injuries, that was his training and innate professionalism. (This itself is almost unimaginable given his injuries.) Rather, when a 'medic' was brought up to stabilize him before evacuation, it's clear that the medic most probably went into shock (understandably) at the extent of Pete's wounds. It was Peter Norton HIMSELF who talked to the medic and calmed him enough that he could do his life-saving job. (That's an Officer...) It wasn't what happened during the explosion that changed Pete's life and makes him a Hero, but everything he's done from THE MOMENTS since that atrocious event. (He moved on...) What a bloke. I'd Never Heard of Pete Norton before watching this. (Why is that, I wonder? Douglas Bader and Simon Weston are household names to those of us who value the sacrifices of those who serve. Perhaps 'War Heroes' are unfashionable now? But Peter Norton isn't just a 'war-hero', though certainly that. Rather, he's a hero and an inspiration to ANYONE who has to cope with life-changing trauma. More people should know this man's name.) xx SF
I was with Major Norton the night he was wounded. He is an excellent ATO and leader.
Defo respect earned too u both complete heroes London Lifelong civvie
I have now watched the current three released interviews and I am so humbled by the people interviewed. It also ensures the story is told and remembered so we hear more than a 30sec sound byte on the news. Keep these interviews coming.
This was our Halloween Party that they were referencing toward the end of the video. Pete was fantastic and his costume was amazing. I’m glad I got to meet him and he’s welcome back anytime!
Jim if you want to invite the BFBS crew to your next Halloween party we will be glad to come! We only dress up as zombie film crew though. Which looks a lot like actual film crew after a long shoot!
@@darrencoventry6788 I found a few photos of Pete from that party. Let me know if you’d like to see them.
@@jimdavis6927 of course and thank you. Please email it to podcasts@bfbs.com
It says a lot about the man that he cries and gets emotional not when reliving the memory of the trauma that happened to him but when faced with the love of his friends. Tea and medals is an excellently produced series celebrating the most honourable aspects of the military in a grounded way.
More Tea & Medals will be released very very soon!
Well said, Pete is 1 in a Million!
He defines the core values of the British Army
Selfless commitment
Courage
Discipline
Loyalty
Integrity
Respect for others
He goes above and behind all of those values, to another level much higher than the already high standard that are expected.
How he kept his composure during that event is mind boggling, that selflessness is a trait only the most insanely composed, courageous, intelligent and above all kindest and empathic men could ever possible endure.
What an inspiration. And the Tributes from the F.B.I. agents were so genuine and richly deserved.
Brutal that his family weren’t supported enough.
Brutal that his family left him.
@@craigefc I can't imagine they decided to do it over a cup of tea one afternoon, presumably they were going through their own version of hell on earth.
This series from BFBS is just fascinating! Pete Norton is made of more than just grit and determination! The “brotherhood” between him and his FBI colleagues is just wonderful. I wish him all the success in the world with his PhD! Good luck sir and I do wish you well for the future; but seeing this production tells me the future will bend to your will!
Channel gets the tone bang on in all interviews military humour there but subtle spot on🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Disgusting you have to fight to get things you need, when you are injured serving your country. When serving your country and if injured, you should receive the best of everything and should never every need to ask. Being ex-military myself 9 years service, i would never recommend anyone to join the forces due to this.
Sad ,,, but I agree,,,,
Of course that is why many don’t join the forces. Not only that the British higher ups put soldiers in danger on the ground without right protection or equipment.
Though it’s the culture in Britain now people don’t do their jobs do very little to help including in the nhs
speechless What incredible man .. My best wishes Pete for your PHD
Said it before and I'll say it again. Exceptional series about exceptional people.
I really don't know what words to write, except what a brave man. I literally have tears in my eyes listening to these men recount their story. The government do nothing for the ex service men.
Thank you for sharing this harrowing event.
Good luck with you PHD Pete.
Superb storytelling, and my greatest wishes for Pete and his brotherhood’s future.
What an amazing man! No other words can convey how I feel, if I can live my life at 1% of this hero’s ability I will be strong.
Thank you Pete for all you have gone though, truly amazing!! I salute you!!💗😘 Great interview BFBS
WOW thank you for putting this into the public arena. Truly heroic and stalwart where so few could be as such
Fantastic story and an incredible soldier.
Outstanding. What an amazing bloke! Very moving and inspiring stuff.
What an amazing man and group of people, thank you for telling his story.
Wow, what a guy, but out of all this he has gained 5+ really solid things, a wife who understands him, two great American friends and their families and two daughters. These in addition to an enhanced respect from those around him plus of course from those who have seen this video. Regards
Fantastic story about a very brave man. I'm glad he's continued to move on with his life with the same dedication, determination and bravery that he showed that day.
I’m so proud of you Pete! You are a true hero, and an example to us all, I will never forget your story, thank you for your service
An incredible interview for a formidable hero. Emotional. Ty
Thank you for your service sir and your huge sacrifice.
I’ve just started watching your videos and wow I am in awe you guys are amazing without You guys I don’t know where our country would be keep up your amazing work
I've come to this series late and I'm just working my way through them but each extraordinary episode is truly amazing. Pete's courage and selflessness in the face of the most dire circumstances anyone could imagine is beyond my vocabulary for admiration. Nick and Chris' actions were derserving of awards in their own right. Why is this entire series not airing on mainstrean TV?
Keep these coming as Damien says "Totally inspirational"
I think it is a great channel. These stories need to be told
Thank you. Good luck on your journey.
Such an inspiring program. I would be proud to be led by any of your programme guests.

A truly inspiring man.
Top man, a truly inspirational man.
Lest we forget great channel right tone it’s amazing
Outstanding man.
Ultimate respect
Stunning bravery
Incredible. 👏
What an inspirational character! I normally steer clear of Americanisms, but in this case, "true grit" really does the job. I also admire the solidarity exhibited by his FBI colleagues but most of all the indomitable spirit that this gentleman has, and continues to display. This is a life lesson that I hope to emulate. Thank you for this.
a true hero, no fake news here
I love this channel.
Fantastic story! I'm lost for words.
Outstanding.
What an amazing man
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HHOOAAHH !!!!!!!!!!! OUTSTANDING SIR & CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR KEEPING YOURSELF TOGETHER IN THAT TIME & SAVING YOUR FELLOW SOLDIERS / BROTHERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO STAYING STRONG WILLED & MOVING FORWARD IN YOUR LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome channel.
So devastating to hear that his marriage broke down. I had a training incidents while I was in the army and I had a very supportive partner, and I don't think I would have coped without it.
What a hero and inspiration 👏 💙 ❤
Amazing!
What an outstanding Man, and his Colleagues in the FBI

NHS & MOD collectively are shameful
True heroes.

This bloke is wot I would say a British bulldog. tiff as nail and professional to a tea. thank you for all have done and wish all the best for the furture.👍👍🇬🇧🍺🍺🍺🍺
Well deserved, and the Americans also rewarding him an award as well , means he definitely impressed the FBI agent’s on the team.
Remarkable guy.
Pete, you’re an inspiration, and terribly goodlooking. You have very nice eyes. Your Halloween costume was spooktacular. Best of luck on the PhD!
With admiration, from Seattle USA🌸
What chance has a young injured veteran got when an officer and GC winner has to battle the NHS for 14 years for treatment.
Absolutely shameful treatment
sorry I dont have the words so I will just say Waw. What a Man you are.
Superb. MOD still horrendous.
I salute you sir. Fear Naught
'Kin 'ell !!!! What a guy !
Just shows how brave and professional he was, but also how much he has sacrificed for the British military. Lost 3 of his limbs and his wife and family. The military need to do a lot more to take care of all during and after combat

I hated BIAP area, ran into a lot of IEDs there. Convoy Ops were hell around there. ~SGT JRH, 101st (ret)
I think I've seen Pete on an episode of Top Gear at some point....some sort of challenge maybe?
Yo, fellow stacker brother...
This is why I am proud to be British.
Why can't I find your channel on Facebook??
On facebook we are under the banner of BFBS Radio or BFBS TV as they are the main pages for our company.
George Cross is non`-combatant equivalent of the Victoria Cross. Top honour.
👍🇬🇧
'dramatic' backing soundtrack starting 1644 just detracts from what Captain Norton is saying. His words speak for themselves without this nonsense. Otherwise a great story from a great guy.
And I like everything Whent into slow motion Siri , for where I find slow motion I found Peace
Do you sell the mugs to support charities for veterans or active military members? if so where can they be found?
Hi John, we don't sell the mugs but we can definitely send you one. If you send your address to creative@bfbs.com we will get one sent out to you. In return, you could donate to our charity - the BFBS Big Salute. We collect donations and then each year we invite forces charities to apply for grants from that pot to support specific projects for the serving military, their families or veterans. Every penny raised goes to the beneficiary projects. No pressure though John - we will get a mug out to you either way.
It’s so cheesy the first bit how do you take your brew 😩😩
Elliott... How do you take your brew? ☕
