50 years ago we had great time's growing up in Carteret. Was not as built up, plenty of woods to play in and plenty of great friends and people. I guess it also has a lot to do with what you make of it.
Does anyone remember Raggucci's store on Cook Ave near the old City Hall , Frank Browns, Hammers, Gruins Pharmacy, sokerles furniture, the cleaners City line bar and the McDonald's on Roosevelt Ave. I grew up in there (1969 to 1992) I went to Lincoln school and the high school the principal at Lincoln school was Mr. Panagrosso the gym teacher Mr. McFadden the meanest teacher in the world infact probably was the inspiration for the star wars character Darth Vader 😅 who I appreciate so much for keeping me in line we need more teachers like that. And the music teacher mr.fossa who probably smoked reefer, Mr. Umansky who smoked cigarettes in the classroom. Boy how times have changed. I loved growing up in Carteret.

This is really nice to look at- My dad was from Carteret. He passed away 10 years ago. I remember him taking me to some of these places (Polar Cub and Tommy's specifically). My dad's side of the family absolutely raves about Tommy's.
I love the shot of the old Ritz Theatre and the quick shot of the old copper works smoke stack. My father worked at the factory, and was a projectionist at both the Ritz and later the Jerry Lewis Twin Cinema.
Thanks James, I lived in Carteret from 1965-1987. It was a great place to grow up. in the 1960's-1970's. I do remember as a kid hearing about a person drowned in the pool in Port Reading. Great to see the old Super Saver! It later changed its name to Acme. Shorecrest Park did have a swimming pool club. Anyone have pictures of that?
I lived on Whitman Street from 1959-1966 at the height. My parents were members of the Jaycee and Jaycee-ettes...my parents belong to bowling leagues, Mah Jong clubs....I was in a couple of parades there too. Thank you, for your movie. I forgot about Tommy's Hot Dogs. My parents were good friends with Tommy. Mark Ingrassia
I'm from Carteret. I was a kid there in the 60's, and then again in the 80's when I got out of the Army. I'm in Wisconsin now, but don't hold that against me.
Does anyone have any pictures of the old shopping center (pre -fire) or fields at the lower end of leick avenue (before the retirement village)? How about pictures of the old hill section (Chodosh's paper store, Jack's Department store, Brislo's Drug Store, Andy's market, the bakery (can't remember the name of it)?
Most of those pictures were sent to me from old friends I grew up with in Carteret now on Facebook. After making this movie I noticed that the pool picture that was posted on Facebook was not Carport in Carteret. Looks like out west somewhere. I don't know anything about the drowning in the pool. I remember sitting under the bridge in Port reading watching the trains but I don't know if that picture is the Chemical Coast line.
Good eyes! Someone posted that on the Columbus school Facebook page as Carport. I did not realize it until about a week latter that it was not. My Gym teacher Mr Wig owed it when it burned. I remember he brought some of the students over to help tear down the place. We had a blast! Do you have any pictures of the swim club?

I remember it all just like you. Graduated ALS in 1978. Mr. Panagrosso was my principal but had another before him.

My friend Perlman was a part owner. She lived across the street from the park. She does have video of the whole thing dated 1950s or 1960s.
Thanks James Kubiak! I remember it all from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
