Mogilny is a no-brainer. The amount of goals he scored in the 92-93 season hasn't been equalled ever since. I know Selänne had 76 goals as well but also more games played.
Ya, I think any player that scores 70 goals and/or 150 points (like Mogilny with 76 and Nicholls with 70 and 150) should be shoe-ins for the HOF. That said, even if Mogilny never had that 76 goal season, he won a stanley cup, a gold in the Olympics, a gold in the World Championship, and a gold in the world juniors (only 30 players ever have won the first 3/triple gold)
Yeah, but Mogilny wasn't a rookie that season, even though he played very well.
@@t.s.3628not saying someone isn’t a HOF here, but I do think players in most sports need to have a career of elite play over several years to be enshrined. IMO, I prefer guys who are among the top of the league even if only for a brief span more so than the guys who compile numbers over a lengthy career.
Exactly. Why is Mogilny not there? So weird
Goalies were nowhere near as athletic as they are in todays game. 🥱
Datsyuk retired last year last played in 2021. Which makes him eligible next year and I have zetterberg going in with him in that class in 2024.
Doing one with Zetterberg is probably the only way to get him to a ceremony.
@@tammydo6140 I 100 percent disagree him and datsyuk going in together would get a lot of media attention here in the D.
Patrick Elias should be a HOF!
he will eventually
Tom Barrasso belongs in the HoF for his response to a reporter’s question about a couple of goalposts the opponent hit in the game…”you want me to stop the shots going wide?”
Alex Mogilny & Rod Brindarmour need to be in the Hockey Hall of fame!
Damn i thought Brindamour was already in, geez about time then
@@Chris-qo4rtThere are, shall we say, quite credible rumors that Brind'Amour was kept out of the HoF for political reasons by Bobby Clarke, who was replaced on the commitee this year, so this very well might be the year for him. Probably relating to the breakup of the 90s flyers team, which may or may not have involved Brind'Amour concussing Lindros off ice after Lindros slept with Brind'Amour's wife.
@@cptjeff1 Damn Brind'Amour sounds like an asshole giving a concussion to an actual good player, should be kept out of the Hall definitely.
@@cptjeff1 nah it’s cause of his terrifyingly ugly nose
I'm not a Sabres fan but Turgeon and Mogilny are absolute HOF. Fleury and Roenick deserve the nod as well.
As someone who dislikes Roenick as a person, I don't want him to be in, but like ... I'm also a personal fan of Theo Fleury, and we know how people feel about him.
So yeah, I agree on both. It's high time for JR and Fleury.
@@onua3963 Oh I agree, I don't like Roenick either but I'm just calling as I see it and unfortunately he deserves to be in HOF. We are on the same page here, big fan of Fleury's game!
All 4 are HOF.
Big-time Turgeon fan (as a NY Isles fan how could I not be) but I don’t think he belongs in. I’m not a Jeremy Roenick fan at all but he absolutely belongs. Dale Hunter shouldn’t be on any type of HOF list, period! @@thehighlanders607
@@kenduffy5397 IMHO, any player who scores over 500 goals, over 1300 points, over a point per game player, 34th all time in scoring should qualify for the HOF.
Theoren Fleurys contribution to opening the discussion about mental health, addiction, and sexual abuse in the world of hockey ALONE, makes him deserve this…. He also happened to be a legendary player.
I agree. He opened the door for the boys of today.
I also grew up watching Fleury play.
Elias is so ridiculously deserving, 1000pts on a defensive minded team and in an era of great goaltending, a cup clinching OT primary assist, 2 cups total, 125 Playoff pts, 1st team All star and an Olympic medal
Exactly. 1,000 points in his era has *far* more value than 1,000 points from, say, Bobby Smith or Brian Propp.
Just to add: Barasso is also the all time leader in points for goalies with 48 assists.
Pierre Turgeon should absolutely be in the HOF, but unfortunately he may very well become a posthumous induction. One of the few hockey conspiracies that I believe is that I think there are enough people on the committee who will always blackball him for his refusal to leave the bench during the Punch-up in Piestany.
As a Metropolitan fan myself naturally I’m a huge Pierre Turgeon fan! However, I don’t think he belongs. With that being said: I agree with about the punch-up thing & if that’s whats keeping him out? Yeah, that’s just stupid! I wouldn’t be upset if Pierre got in but he was a really-really REALLY good player but he wasn’t a great player. Just my humble opinion
Just really rooting for Mogilny this year. Wouldn't hate any of the other contenders like Brind'Amour or Turgeon but Mogilny is a must. And of course Henrik is going to be first ballot.
The one thing I'll add on Patrik Elias as a Devils fan is he almost died of Hepatitis while playing overseas during the lockout. It was really bad, he dropped like 60 pounds - but he was able to come back after quite a bit of time and still be a great player... Like others have said, franchise leader in virtually all reg season & playoff goals/assists/points, and put those numbers up despite the deadpuck era. He's borderline HOF, hope he gets in one year. He had the skill to have better offensive numbers too, but was committed to NJD's system.
He is the only Czech player with over 1000 points besides Jágr
Excellent work as always, thank you! Just one comment: since you mentioned it is not merely a NHL HoF, Neil Broten was a member of the US Lake Placid 1980 team.
If Vladdy never gets in that crash in Birmingham, 2 things would be different. 1, the Wings win more cups in that era. And 2, he's a 1st ballot Hall of Famer. People forget how good that dude was.
So glad that I discovered your channel...........entertaining, informative post, as always.......Go Hank, and all the Red Wings!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jere Lehtinen, 3 Selke trophys, 1 Cup, 1 IIHF World Champ. Helped to win Finland's first IIHF title back in 1995. Lehtinen is the last winger so far to win Selke. Now he's GM for Finland's national team, winning Olympic Gold and a couple of IIHF World's titles.
I can't believe he's not on your board.
As a Canes fan I can say I actually wouldn't mind if Rod gets into the Hall a few years or even a decade from now. I'd like it to be after winning the Cup as a coach for Carolina. While Brind'amour already being top 50 all-time in playoff coaching wins is impressive, why not wait and see how high that can go?
I think Datsyuk retired last summer (saw something about it, wasnt really too big in the media)
Mogilny is the same type of player as Temu Selanne. He belongs in. Dynamic scorer.
Brind'Amour hasn't gotten the respect by the voters he deserves. He was a solid all around player, veteran leadership, played tough, hard and gritty. Rod was in two Stanley Cup Finals, winning in 2006. His contributions on the ice are a no Brainer. No idea why he isn't in already.
Love the content. The work put into it is amazing.
Me: " there's a player that had over a 1000 pts at above a PPG, triple gold member (SC, olympic gold, WC gold), led the league in goals one year, and the first Soviet defector."
HoF: "sounds like a great player and story!"
Me: "his name is Alex Mogilny"
HoF: "Never!!!"
When Jagr finally retires, you waive the 3-year waiting period.
He will be 107 by then, so they better...
@@kokushi629😂😂😂😂😂
@@kokushi629 😆😅 funny stuff!
Shannon, I want you to know I love your content all year round, but I doubt you hear this much so let me be the one to tell you. You shine making offseason content. You’re fantastic at covering the game as it’s happening, but you’re unparalleled as a sports historian on CZcams. Every time you do a history video or a HOF video like this it’s absolutely excellent. I learn something new every single time.
As a 28 year old who started following the Rangers in 2005, I’m really excited to see Henrik get in. There are several greater goalies in NHL history, but few deserve to have their career validated in history the way the King does. He never got his Cup but it’s time to validate that no Cup will ever hold him back
Thx as always for all of the thought and effort you put into this. Re: case for Neal Broten, you might have mentioned the fact that he's a Miracle on Icer.
Can we at least have the conversation to add Don Cherry as a builder while he’s still alive? You can’t count how many 30,40,50 yr old fans & players will tell you Don Cherry got them to love hockey. Great piece!
I thought he was already in.
Damn. He's iconic to hockey.
Thanks for talking up Mogilny. It broke my heart to see him leave Buffalo, but was thrilled when he won a Cup with NJ. Definitely a HOFer.
Turgeon and Hunter need to go in together the same year. I would watch that ceremony.
Mogilny has to get in. I moved to the Buffalo area in '93 and watching his highlights got me into hockey.
I'll accept that if the 1992-93 islanders can all be there with baseball bats for Hunter. Payback is a bitch.
A Conn Smythe should be like a free pass to the Hall of Fame
I thought Jaromir Jagr should be in, but he's still playing! Edit: He's 51 !
the year he retires he's in.
@@johanjotun1647 Yep, he's going to be one of those rare people that gets to skip the 3-year waiting period.
Hank should be a shoe in for the hall. As should Datsyuk. And Ossie (can you tell I'm a red wings fan :))
"F me, right?" -Mike Vernon
@@imnotyourfriendbuddy1883 yea f him
401 Wins and 3 Cups and he totally saved the 2008 run, Osgood should be in
What has Lundqvist done to deserve it. Surprised that Tim Thomas was not mentioned, he certainly deserves it more.
@@humankirk9196
If you don’t think Henrik belongs in the HOF, you weren’t paying attention when he played. The guy was the best goalie in the NHL for the better part of a decade. He took teams to the finals once and conference finals multiple times that had no business being there. If he had played on the penguins or Blackhawks he would have won 3-4 cups in his sleep. You’re silly.
Dave Taylor is the greatest NCAA DIV 1 scorer ever, so that has to count as well. Only two players ever had more points and it took them MANY more games to squeak by his total.
It would be great to see Z and Datsyuk go in the same year. They werent called the Euro Twins for nothing. So many great years together
Z is not a hof
@@davidkruse4030 from just the NHL maybe not, but this is hockey overall and he is one of the few people that is in the triple gold club
Broten should be in just on 1980 Olympics, let alone his NHL career.
I dont think its based on retirement. Its based on last game played. That's how pronger got in while being on a NHL roster
If Rod gets in this year im gonna feel so bad for him, he literally lost his dad just a week or two ago and he's always said he only cared to get in if his parents got to see it.
So sad to hear this. Rod is a great individual, and such a strong family man. That would be a gut punch for sure, not having his dad there to see it.
Crazy Damphousse is still not in. Such a prolific goal scorer, and is still involved with the game of hockey as an analyst for RDS.
Damphousse was very underrated, which is odd, since Canadiens players are usually overrated. I think of him being a similar player, and almost an equal to Dale Hawerchuk.
Brind'Amour, Mogilny, Elias, and Lundqvist. Alternate picks Taylor, Zetterberg, Osgood plus Datsyuk when he is eligible.
I would have Tim Thomas in the Hall long before Lundqvist. Surprised to see Thomas not even mentioned, he certainly has the hardware, including a Conn Smythe to break a 39-year drought. Also, interesting fact, he was the 3rd last draft pick ever of the Quebec Nordiques, a 9th rounder in 1994.
Imho its criminal that Mogilny isnt in. He scored 76 goals and has a Cup. Alot of dominant seasons. Hes a no brainer for me
I think Alexander Mogilny not being in the Hall of Fame is a seriously glaring omission, especially because the Hockey Hall of Fame has inducted players in the past based on their importance to the game and not just their excellence as a player. They inducted Willie O'Ree for instance, who was a journeyman NHL player but his breaking the colour barrier was an important moment for hockey.
Mogilny could be inducted either on skill or importance to the game, and when you consider both it should be a no-brainer. He was a Stanley Cup and Lady Byng winner, an over point-per-game scorer for his career, would have won a Rocket Richard for a 76-goal season, a six-time All-Star, including twice as a second team All-Star. His talent was immense. I think Mats Sundin once said Mogilny was the best player he ever played with.
He had this career after being the first player from the Soviet Union to defect and come to the NHL, which he did at significant personal risk and which paved the way for future Russians to come.
I honestly don't know what is keeping him out.
Another great vid! I was right there with you jumping between which goalie gets in after The King, Osgood's '08 run in the playoffs is stoutly underrated due to the skaters accompanying that team, so he'd have my vote. But I am rooting for Barrasso none the less if its not Osgood.
Can you please do an end of season division ranking? Thanks.
I am biased as a die hard flyers fan, I think Rod Brinda’Mour needs to be in. If not for the lindros issue I’m not sure Synder traded him away.
I think this year it’s lundqvist, mogilny, either brindamour or turgeon, as the third & Barrasso and or osgood as the fourth.
Good content as always. I'll just want to make a input to one of your lately subjects of the crisis in the broadcasting of NHL.
Viaplay that broadcast NHL in the nordic countries had a 60% drop in market shares (stock value) last week and a expected revenue drop citing subscription drops due to economic uncertain times.
There is also a crisis in other swedish sportsmedia providers (cmore, tv4 so on..) , so NHL might have to look to find solutions in future. If they want to keep important european market afloat.
Claude Lemieux:
Stanley Cup x 4
786 pts
3rd overall for game winning Stanley Cup playoff goals at 19
Conn Smythe Trophy
Please get Brind'Amour and Tkachuk in the Hall!
Shannon, if you were to have complete control of hall of fame entries, would you do anything different? What guidelines would you use to judge who gets in and who doesn't?
Steve Thomas was in a patrick swayze/keanu reeves movie. That, and over 900 pts …HOFer!
Left Field - Lorne Chabot, Dave Kerr, John Ross Roach
My picks are Mogilny, Zetterberg, Brad Richards and Chris Osgood.
And another hour of THG videos taking my sleep away.. can't be angry though 😂
If I got to pick: Brind'Amour, Mogilny, Zetterberg, Lundqvist.
SHANNON hope you can have video on the Eklund Larsson buyout what it means for Vancouver and Eklund going forward
Anouncer on microphone: Aaaaand the Honorable Member Introduction in 2023 goes toooooo : THG *standing ovation in the room* 😮😂❤
Jagr. Yeah he’s still technically playing but give the 2nd all time point leader an exemption already.
Can't wait for 2043 when Jagr gets put in the Hall
Nah, they'll bypass the 3 year waiting period so he'll be in the class of 2040.
You didn't mention that Lundqvist also has an Olympic Gold Medal for Sweden.
Yeah, Lundqvist, Mogilny and Zetterberg are all Olympic champions. That helps.
I'm a believer that longevity should also be factored in. If a guy played for 20 seasons at a competitive level but was only "really good" he should be considered. Staying conditioned and figuring out how to be successful for much longer than others is a skill in itself when it comes to sports.
I think character is taken into account too and Theo Fleury is an absolute nutter.
He's hockey's Curt Schilling - borderline HOFer as a player who earned himself a lot of "No" votes with his abhorrent views
Possible 2023 Hockey Hall of Fame induction scenario...
Pat Verbeek
Keith Tkachuk
Rod Brind'Amour
Alexander Mogilny
Jennifer Botterill / Caroline Ouellette
Howard Baldwin (Builder)
Bill Dineen (Builder)
Since the Hockey News Magazine did a 4-part special on the World Hockey Association this year, which included a section on Howard Baldwin and his New England Whalers, who became the Hartford Whalers when they joined the National Hockey League, and then became the Carolina Hurricanes, and Rod Brind'Amour won the Stanley Cup as a player with the Carolina Hurricanes, and Rod Brind'Amour is currently the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, and they lost to the Florida Panthers and Matthew Tkachuk (Keith Tkachuk's son) in the semi-finals of this year's Stanley Cup playoffs, the following could be this year's Hockey Hall of Fame inductees...
Pat Verbeek - a 500+ goals club member, played for Howard Baldwin's Hartford Whalers, won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999. Other possible Hartford Whalers inductees for 2023 - Mike Liut, Ray Ferraro, or iron man and 6-time Stanley Cup winner, Doug Jarvis.
Keith Tkachuk - a 500+ goals club member, father of Matthew Tkachuk.
Rod Brind'Amour - Stanley Cup winner and 2-time Selke Trophy winner with the Carolina Hurricanes as a player. Current head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Howard Baldwin (Builder) - Owner of the New England Whalers / Hartford Whalers. Hollywood producer. Later part owner of the Minnesota North Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins. 1 Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh.
Bill Dineen (Builder) - Father of Kevin Dineen of the Hartford Whalers. As an NHL player, Bill Dineen won 2 Stanley Cup championships with the Detroit Red Wings in 1954 and 1955. He went on to become the head coach of the Houston Aeros for six seasons in the World Hockey Association, and won the Avco World Trophy in 1974 and 1975. He also coached Howard Baldwin's New England Whalers for one season. He then became the head coach for the Adirondack Red Wings in the American Hockey League and they won the Calder Cup in 1986 and 1989.
That list makes you sound like a Whalers fan. I like it.
One thing that I always thought was 1 should they take someone who was a really strong player and a builder and add the resumes together for a hall of fame induction. That and or should hall of fame players who go on to become really good builders think of aJoe Sakic as an example be put into the hall a second time just a thought.
Corey Crawford should be a Hall of Famer here's why he has 2 Stanley Cups 2 Jennings and he was honestly considering the Blackhawks Playoff MVP of 2013 Patrick Kane who won the Conn Smythe that year even said Corey Crawford was the MVP of the playoffs. So many people should blame Pierre Mcguire for Crow losing the Conn Smythe because he was so biased against Crow making it sound like Crawford was a bad goalie when he was truly a great goalie.
Osgood gets a lot of flak, people forget about him saving the day in 08 because Nashville was doing a number on Hasek. He came in and never gave the net back on the way to a cup.
If Claude Lemieux's not in the HHoF, then Justin Williams shouldn't even be considered.
can you do a video on guys in the THG HOF? and maybe bring in some new guys!!
I was a longtime fan of "The Riverton Rifle" - Reggie Leach. Terrific shot, great goalscorer, and set a record of 19 goals in one playoff year that has been only equalled once - by Jari Kurri playing alongside The Great One. Leon Draisaitl was headed for breaking that record this year until the Oilers got eliminated, but it wasn't to be. Next season, Leon!!
Seeing Bobby Smith up there peaked my interest towards him again. He did contribute on the Habs team that won and did win rookie of the year one year there. Curious who he was up against as well? In Minnesota he was captain and was with them to the finals there. He captained a consistently decent Minnesota team .
Starting to see more players who joined great teams and won cups a small few contributed for more than a season.
You should do a video on players with their numbers retired that aren't in the hall of fame
Zetterberg just for lifting Crosby's stick.
Let’s push the algorithm and get Bizz into the HHOF
Turgeon ,Brindamour ,Lundqvist and Barrasso for me 🙏
I remember Brian Propp and Rick Tocchet on the 1987 Canada Cup team. I think that's worthy of note.
Not convinced by Lundqvuist as a first ballot HoF. What is it which elevates his career above say Mika Kiprusoff or Rask, Bobrovskiy or Quick who won't be considered first ballot, if at all.
More 80s Oilers for the Hall of Fame - Andy Moog, Esa Tikkanen, Charlie Huddy, Craig MacTavish, Kent Nilsson, Adam Graves
Would love to see GB captain Jonathan Phillips in there. Most caps ever for his country. What dedication to such a minority sport in the UK.
You’d think 500 goals for players who didn’t play most of their careers in the 80’s would be a bigger deal. Hopefully Tkachuk and Turgeon eventually get in the Blues hall of fame that was created last year.
Lots of good to great players there, Turgeon , Mogilny, Fleury, Roenick, and of the lower scorers, maybe Larmer?
It is worth noting that Jagr isn't eligible since he continues to play. At his present rate, he'll get in posthumously. Jagr gets in immediately following his 3 years of retirement.
I honestly think they should waive the 3 years for him, he should get In immediately.
@@Nyrfan30if he had retired immediately I think they would have put him in immediately. Since he's stayed active after leaving the NHL I bet they make him wait for 3 years
Even if he retires this year, he won't be in until 2026, 36 years post draft and first time eligible. Lmao😂
That's insane
@@MMGJ10 Yep, he's basically been playing in his home country since his last stint in the NHL, and that was as a Flame in 2018, nearly 30 years after he was drafted. He's second in career points and is a lock as soon as he's he's eligible, though.
My 4 guys this year are Turgeon, Fleury, Mogilny, Lundqvist
I stan Ozzy and I will not apologize. Also Zetterberg is a given when you consider his play for team Sweden. I am also absolutely not a homer and not biased at all.
You cannot have a Hockey Hall of Fame without Bengt Gustafson!
In a bubble, Elias likely wouldn't even be realistically on the radar, but being the career leader for points for the Devils, and accumulating those at the worst time for scoring (especially for a defense-first team his entire career) - there are certainly other candidates that *look* better, but Elias certainly has many intangibles in his favour. Ultimately though, I just don't see it happening.
Elias was more than just a scorer. He was a great all around player. I don't get the logic that you put in Guy Charbonneau because he was a great defensive player, but not Elias, who was just as good defensively but could also score. Because he could score, he wasn't thought of as a great defensive player, but he was.
@@RRaquello - And lack of recognition for his defensive game is one of the strikes against. He was never nominated for a Selke (and on teams with John Madden, Bobby Holik and Jay Pandolfo, he wouldn't be). His defensive skill was attributed more to system than individual. Also working against him is he wasn't really relevant in international play, averaging less than a point-per-game in major events (Olympics and World Championships). As a huge Devils fan, I would love for him to get in, and there is a path for it (all-time team leading scorer, 2 Cups +2 Finals) ... but when you look at the rest of the waiting class, I just don't know if he can ever jump off the page enough :/
In a few years, Id like to see a HOF class with Anze Kopitar, Jonathan Quick, Dave Taylor, and Rogie Vachon.
I was wondering, I know there’s broadcasters in the HHOF, is there a limit on them? Or can they be inducted whenever?
Theo Fleury should get in the hall of fame, his stats, his story, his size, not many players his size at the time, if any played a physical game, he played physical wasn't afraid to go into the dirty areas. I believe he changed the perception, that the small player could be physical, and not a one dimension player!
And also call this a conspiracy theory, but I believe Bettman would rather Theo Fleury dosent go into the Hall now, because it could bring up the Blackhawks and Kyle Beach incident!
@@lukeeyeamyourfather3488 Bettman doesn't have anything to do with the Hall though
On Neal Broten: You forgot the Olympic Gold in 1980. Ups his stock, IMO.
Other players on the list have Olympic medals.
@@TheHockeyGuy True, but were some of those as consequential as the US victory in '80? Considering the dominance of Canada and the USSR at the time?
That 1980 Gold probably did more to jump-start American hockey programs than just about anything else, to the point where we're now producing players of the Matthews/Hughes type, and NHL expansion has largely been on this side of the border.
I'm just playing Devil's Advocate (no pun intended, as I'm a Devils fan). I cannot argue with your choices, Shannon.
Love what you do. Don't know why no one has given you your own radio/TV show.
Lundqvist Mogilny Osgood Zetterberg
I should remember by now that Cujo isn't in the Hall of Fame but I'm still surprised every time I'm reminded that he isn't.
Man, so many people that neeeed to be in the hall but so few spots
Moginly, Osgood, Lunquist, Zetterberg
Ngl I see alot of red wings love in this video. I love it. Lundquist was on a different level but the first 4 goalies on your list had 3 wings. (Cujo to a lesser extent as a wings connection). Z and datsyuk were a great duo. Vladdy is one of the greatest what if and still is greatly honored in the D.
Osgood is the obvious choice.
