"Mystery" Camp Discovery on Mount Everest

- In Spring, 2004, Dave Hahn and I went back to Mount Everest to search once again for Andrew Irvine and clues to his and George Mallory's 1924 disappearance on the mountain. During the expedition, we found quite a few interesting artifacts, and I was able to re-discover this camp - among others - on the saddle of the First Step at 27,600 feet, with remains from both the Chinese expeditions of 1960 and 1975. This is awesome, everyone else i've ever seen climb Everest makes a dash for the summit and wont step off the line... this guy's just going for a little stroll at 28000 ft because something caught his eye. Love it!

He could have easily taken the video without speaking and then narrated it later.
There would be literally no difference between narrating it later or speaking right there and then on the mountain. So shes right.
And in fact lets just say he was having an off day and speaking really exhausted his lungs and body.
His friend would then of course do everything possible to help him thus putting his friend at risk now too.
If you are on a dangerous mission like this then I honestly believe that it should be taken very seriously.
As in no joking around, laughing, talking (aside from mission related topics). Sounds like a robot and not as fun but its the best way to ensure success.
Just like basic gun safety you never have your finger on the trigger (unless you are shooting right then and there), never point it anyone or anything unless thats your intended target.
Thats no different then safety in a situation like this.
So just because he has made this his life doesnt mean he has to take unnecessary actions.
Especially when other peoples lives are in jeopardy. 😁

This isnt his first time on Everest. He was there to look for something either for Irvine or some other reason. He wasnt there to summit that day.
crazy that we all find ourselves here today, i got here because i had a suggested video in my feed of a guy finding a body on everest, from there i went to a 46 minute long doc about an eddie bauer expedition to K2 which was a great watch by the way, next came a video about some guys climbing anapurna III (unclimbed) then came a vid of a guy jumping from Everest in a wing suit, and then this bad boy got cued up by the CZcams gods. Gotta say I'm enjoying these random mountain climbing vids.

People who don't have alot of knowledge about high altitude climbing probably have no idea how impressive every second of this video is. This guy is in the deathzone, with roughly 1/3 the oxygen we usually breath, and he is casually poking around in old sites looking at interesting things from past expeditions. This is not typical on Mt Everest nor is it as casual as he makes it look. When you are that high up, most people make a beeline for the top, then immediately trek straight back down, no side trips, no exploring. This is an amazing piece of footage for many reasons. I really wish more people could do this, as it would be so cool to see what other weird anomalies are scattered throughout the death zone of everest. But it is so difficult to actually explore when you are at those altitudes, most people would die if they tried to do what this guy is doing. Maybe some day technology will allow us to further explore the heights of mountains above the deathzone, but until then, these rare videos of absolute beast man mountain climbers poking around a bit will have to do lol! Awesome video! Thanks for sharing this!

I've been lucky for sure to have genetics that allow me to do fairly well up there, and I love nothing more than exploring, finding new places and bits of the past, and sharing them when I can. @@josueztheiii9089 Yes. George Mallory was an Englishman Mountaineer who on his 3rd attempt to climb Everest went missing and wasn’t seen again until these guys located his remains. The small device Dave picks up at 3:59/4:00 is the valve to a French Bluet camp stove but the legs, pot support and fuel knob are broken off. There is a small blue fuel canister seen on the ground off to the right earlier in the video.

I live within a few miles of their place of birth and I find it a very honourable cause and your Water Tower awareness. To climb not just to get up and back down as quickly as possible but to take extra time on the most dangerous mountains around the world to look for the missing an retrieve "trash" is nothing short of admirable. As sick as it sounds, I really hope the bodies stay there if just for pure fascination. It's almost a snapshot of history seeing Mallory and other various climbers throughout the years, just think, that he was there in 1924! You are walking past a guy who, in many ways was very similar to you, but this is a man who did it before WW2, before phones and the internet, before supercars, before jet airliners; the Chinese guys in the 1960s, they came 1 year after Mao! Just think about that. The fact that the world is incredibly different to when these guys decided to tackle the mountain, for better or worse, these guys serve as markers of history and deserve our greatest of respects; to leave them on the mountain that they knew full well would probably take their lives. Most of us will be underground when we go, I know I'd rather be on top of the world.
If the people who went up were introspective and philosophical thinkers, I guarantee the mountain would be a better place.
There are people up there who lived through the USSR, Mao, WW1 + 2, Korean Wars, Vietnam etc, all frozen in time from the period they died in. It's very enlightening. I hope one day that I have the money to go up. If I become frozen in time like the other men and women, then drape me in a Union Jack and show that I died in the time of Brexit and during the reign of the great Queen Elizabeth II.

Actually once your in the death zone you must be selfish and ignore any one in need because both of you wont make it so all that shit stays there aint nobody gonna drag an oldass heavy corpse thats frozen in an extremely earthquake and avalanche prone area.
Connor Mcgregor is gay, actually in 2017 and in 2018 the sherpa’s that lead groups up went up there and removed tons of garbage and recyclables and also removed two bodies. One of the bodies was a Russian who’d recently died and the other was French. Search the videos and you’ll see them.
@@jmfong76 the Sherpa were doing that because the government paid them to do it. Things are so bad in Nepal, economically, those men are willing to risk their lives to pick up the garbage left by the scum that climb the mountain for a thrill.

@@rellim92O most of the stuff left there is spent oxygen bottles etc which have been used up and served their purpose so are left behind. Nowadays you need to take your rubbish with you but this is all old stuff from back in the day when being eco friendly wasnt a priority.
The crampon part is a bit worrying as I don't know if climbers carry spare crampons although if it is from the 1960 chinese expedition as he said thankfully all the 1960 climbers made it back down, so perhaps one of them was missing part of a crampon on the descent.

Hello -- Thank you so much for responding to our questions. I may be wrong, but I recall reading several years ago that Andrew Irvine's family, if his remains are found, wanted him buried in the family cemetery. I'm sure you have distractors who state your sole reason for searching for their remains is for "fame and fortune," but I don't believe that. You mountaineering folks are a special breed, and I hope one day his remains are found. I know I may fall out of favor with 99.9 % of those who believe otherwise, but I don't think they made it to the summit. I would never summit on the north side, because I'd take one look at the ladder at the Khumbu icefall, and would drop dead of a heart attack right then and there. I've watched a few videos for the south face summit, and those last yards/meters to the summit also give me the willies. Also, I think Mr. Norton is an overlooked figure -- he made all those trips up to the camps alone. I love the United States Rockies, and can't imagine what it must be like to see the Himalayas in person, much less the thrill to actually climb them. I will confess to being a bit of a rock hound, which I introduced to my son when he was just a toddler. I'd love to have a chunk of the "yellow" band, but probably would have to admire it from afar through the bars of a jail cell. (bad attempt at humor). Just wanted to say thank you for all the efforts you all put into this, and to your families who stay behind. I hope one day in my lifetime the mystery is finally resolved, but I'm glad the honor has gone to Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Hillary became a friend to the people of Nepal, constructing schools and medical clinics, and developing a genuine bond with them. Mallory would not have done the same. Just my opinion. It's also my opinion, you climbers of today and who continue your quest for the truth, are in my view, true "rock" stars. My very best wishes to you all, Patricia

My recollection most recently is that Irvine's family preferred to have his remains, if found, interned on the mountain as we did for Mallory in 1999. In a perfect world, remains would be able to be brought down, repatriated, and buried near the family. Sadly, the risk to try and do so would be quite high, and most understand the need to let the dead lie where they are. And, you're right: All of us have been accused of seeking nothing but fame and fortune, 99.9% of the time by people who never meet, talk to, or try to understand what is really going on. For me, this story and others I've pursued on Everest have always been about telling the history of the place that is so often misunderstood. Hi Jake! hope you still read these comments. Much respect for all your hard efforts, I've enjoyed your videos and I've really been hooked in on the mystery of Mallory and Irvine. I've read the book Fight for Everest (by Norton) and Camp Six (by Smythe) and spend quite a bit of time staring at photos and maps of the NE ridge area trying to picture in my mind what happened to Mallory and Irvine. I'll never get to go to Everest so it's about all I can do! Anyway when reading those early expeditions Mallory and co seemed focussed on climbing through the Great Couloir rather than climb the Second Step, the reason being was to avoid exhausting themselves on big obstacles (not because he was unable to). Before heading up Mallory spoke of taking two routes and to look out for them as early as 8am either up the Couloir gully or on the NE ridge. My curiosity is the area in and above the Great Couloir. Has anyone done searches in that area? There might be oxygen bottles or other clues on the ledges above Norton and Smythe's high point. After reading the books I 've come to the opinion that Mallory and Irvine first traversed into the Great Couloir much like Norton/Somerville did but then had to back track out and were spotted 4 or 5 hours late climbing above the first step. Then when the snow squall hit at 2pm the severe cold made them retreat back down to camp where they got lost and had a fall in one of the yellow band gullies. The dropped axe either marked near where the accident occurred or was left by Irvine as a marker to climb back up to to find his way back out........... I saw the great documentary of your search in 2019 looking for Irvine and I too wonder if his body has gone off the face into the glacier below. I'd love to know if anyone other than Messner has summited through the couloir or if anyone has searched the base of the pyramid above the couloir, there has to be more of their oxygen bottles or equipment still up high on the mountain hidden somewhere. In response to so many comments by others about his labored breathing, when he picked up the large tank and confirmed it still had some juice in it, I kept saying: take a hit, dude. Those guys who found Mallory were courageous and dedicated to their cause, and I applaud their efforts. With the glacier melting and more bodies being uncovered, maybe this will be the year they finally find Irvine. Fingers crossed !!
