- Spain (Chick Corea) / Mark Sganga Fingerstyle Guitar Arrangement
"One of my faves since I was a teenager, Chick Corea co-opted the theme from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez (presumably an homage to Miles' Sketches of Spain) for the intro to his iconic composition. I've brought it back to the guitar from whence it came, and hope to honor Chick's great piece!" - Mark

Interesting info on Chick Corea's Spain composition as found in Wikipedia:
"Spain" is an instrumental jazz fusion composition by jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea. It was composed in 1971. It has been recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucía, and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Béla Fleck in 1979. The introduction used in the song is from Concierto de Aranjuez, a guitar concerto by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo.

Lyrics:
Yesterday
Just a photograph of yesterday
and all it's edges folded
and the corners faded sepia brown
and yet it's all I have of our past love
a post script to it's ending
Brighter days
I can see such brighter days
when every song we sang is sung again
and now we know
we know this time it's for good
and we're lovers once again
and you're near me
I can remember the rain in december
the leaves of brown on the ground
in Spain I did love and adore you
the nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
and tomorrow will bring you near me
I can recall my desire
every reverie is on fire and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
yes today, I can say
I get a kick every time they play that spain again
I can remember the rain in december
the leaves of brown on the ground
Our love was a spanish fiesta
the bright lights and sounds were our joy each day
and the nights were the heat of yearning
I can recall my desire every reverie
is on fire and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
yes today, I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
I see moments of history
your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
and we live again as if dreaming
the sound of our hearts beat like castanets
and forever we'll know their meaning
I can recall my desire every reverie is on fire
and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
yes, today, I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
[music solo]
You gaze at me
I see moments of history
your eyes meet mine
and they dance to the melody
and we live again as if dreaming
the sound of our hearts beat like castenets
and forever we'll know their meaning
I can recall my desire
every reverie is on fire
and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
yes today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
be do de
[scat solo]
You gaze at me
I see moments of history
your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
and we live again as if dreaming
the sound of our hearts beat like castanets
and forever we'll know their meaning
I can remember the rain in december
the leaves of brown tumbling down
in spain I did love and adore you
the nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
and tomorrow will bring you near me
I can recall my desire every reverie is on fire
and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
yes today I can say
I get a kick every time you sing that spain
whoa, whoa, oh yeah
Thanks! RIP Al Jarreau. Do you know if he wrote these lyrics?
Yes. The Jarreau version ( with Steve Gadd on drums!) is on his album, This Time and he is credited with the lyrics (and some mean scat).
Thanks I suspected as much. I’m a big fan of Jarreau, esp “Look to the Rainbow” album!

39 YRS A GUITAR IN MY HANDS, WHEN WILL I GET THERE?
I tell my students“it’s a life’s work!” The beauty part is, after so many decades, there’s always something to learn and strive for🎉
That is probably the perfect nylon guitar tone i have ever heard ... the tone the mix the loudness level the level reverb delay the clarity .... all top notch ... the mixing engineer did an incredible job. 👏🏻
Wow, thanks! I was taught to strive for tone in my touch. As my own engineer I try to capture the sound of the instrument. Really appreciate your feedback!
@@MarkSganga Wow! I must then say you are an awesome mixing engineer too along with being an awesome guitarist ❤😍
Man after my own heart. Thank you for sharing. Loved it 👍

Beutiful arrangement....do you have the TAB, please?
Thanks for asking. Sorry I don’t. Will consider making one if there’s more interest.
Hi Mark
Very nice, is the notes and Tabs available?
Thanks! Sorry haven't had time for that.
Ставлю лайк, но нужно ещё поработать над техникой, думаю Марк сам это знает.Спасибо за музыку.
🙏
Hi Mark, phantatstic arrangement and performance, love it so much.
Do you have score / tabs available for sale?
Greetings Juergen
Thanks much Juergen! Sorry, don't have tabs at this time. There are a few lessons of my arrangements available on my CZcams channel however!
Absolutely beautiful Mark! I notice you are using two mics; I am wondering what type of mics you are using and how you have them placed? They capture your sound wonderfully :)
Thanks Ed. Those are SE, sE8's, recommended by the great engineer Todd Urban. One is aimed at the 12th fret & one at the lower bout. The late great Larry Gates always set the mic's like that, so I followed suit!
@@marksganga8678 Many thanks for your prompt response! I hope to record video for some of my own pieces in the coming year and your recommendations will prove to be very helpful :) Much Appreciated :)
Sounds like Joaquin Rodrigo.
Thanks. The into is of course Rodrigo via Chick and Miles!
This is not Chick Coreaq but _Concierto de Aranjuez_ written by Joaquín Rodrigo. The first time I heard it was (if I remember right) on Miles Davis's Spanish Sketches, nice. However, the Version of Jim Hall with Chat Baker is the killer one, which I really low.
An educated listener! Yes the opening is Rodrigo (Chick Corea used it as his introduction too) after the theme of the Rodrigo concerto starts the Corea composition Spain. I very much enjoyed Jim Hall’s version too!
Well, I'm learning both pieces at the moment too, and yes it's very nice, I mean how you play it. @@MarkSganga
Pretty good but was expecting that classic groove during the chorus.
Superb!
